1 BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN DENTAL HYGIENE A Unique Accelerated Program in a Distinctive School
2 A Unique Accelerated Program in a Distinctive School Dental Hygienists act as co-therapists with dentists in the prevention, recognition and treatment of oral diseases. Recognizing the increasing need for this service, Pacific s Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry and the College of the Pacific, the undergraduate liberal arts and sciences division, have partnered to establish the nation s first 36-month Bachelor of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene. The three-year, accelerated program (eight semesters) is especially designed for highly qualified students. Through the integration of education, experiential learning and clinical practice, students learn to work with the dental team to treat a wide variety of patients. Clinical Experience Pacific Dental Hygiene Graduates Provide quality dental hygiene care in an evolving profession Assess, plan, implement and evaluate dental hygiene services for individual patients and community oral health programs Develop patient counseling programs to encourage health promotion and disease prevention Appreciate humanistic values that respect the dignity of each individual Pursue continuous enhancement through professional development Address the challenges facing the profession of dental hygiene, dental education and our communities In cooperation with the School s Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency program, the dental hygiene program offers patient-centered care in an efficient clinical model that demonstrates the highest standards of service. Staffed by dental residents, dental hygiene students and licensed, experienced faculty, the clinic provides exceptional patient co-therapy experiences for students and excellent services for the community. Employment Opportunities According to the U.S. Department of Labor, dental hygiene is projected to be one of the 30 fastest growing occupations. The California Employment Development Department reports that the strong growth is due to the public s heightened awareness of the importance of regular dental care. Approximately 70% of dental hygienists practice in private dental offices. Having a Bachelor s degree opens additional doors to hygienists who may choose careers in public health, research, management, sales, special needs patient care, teaching and administration.
3 Admission Information Requirements for Freshman Admission The admission committee carefully considers each applicant s scholastic record, standardized test scores, essay and letters of recommendation. Consideration also includes personal attributes and qualities, as well as demonstrating knowledge about a career in dental hygiene. Requirements for Freshman applicants with less than 15 units of college credit: A completed undergraduate application SAT or ACT exams scores Competitive High school GPA ranging from An essay One academic recommendation Successful completion of three years of lab science (physics is recommended) Dental experience (job shadowing, employment, observation in a dental office) An interview (by invitation for competitive applicants only) Application Deadline: November 15 for entry into the program the following fall. Notification of acceptance will be made by March 15. Health Requirements Prior to entry into the professional portion of the program (the final four semesters), several health requirements must be met and documentation submitted to the Cowell Wellness Center. They include a medical examination and current vaccinations or other proof of immunity against measles, rubella (German measles), mumps and Hepatitis B, as well as a negative tuberculosis test. Tuition Requirements for Transfer Admission Students with at least 63 semester or 94 quarter college units who have completed or are currently completing the program prerequisites will be considered for transfer admission into the program s spring semester start. After approximately 16 months, transfer students will earn their Bachelor of Science degree in Dental Hygiene. To accommodate the accelerated nature of the program, students must take classes during all three semesters of the academic year. Because published annual charges for tuition and housing/food are based on a two-semester year, three-semester students should add 50% to those costs. Requirements for Transfer applicants who have attended a two or four-year post-secondary institution: A completed undergraduate application A competitive college GPA, must be 2.7 or higher An essay One academic recommendation Dental experience (job shadowing, employment, observation in a dental office) An interview (by invitation for competitive applicants only) Application Deadline: August 1 for entry into the program the following spring. Notification of acceptance will be made by December 1.

5 The professional curriculum in the dental hygiene program provides students with knowledge of oral health and disease as a basis for assessment, planning and implementation of dental hygiene services for individual patients and community oral health programs. Preclinical coursework provides students hands-on experience in an outstanding simulation lab, developing and practicing clinical skills. With the accelerated program, students begin seeing patients at the beginning of their second semester, working collaboratively with dental residents to deliver comprehensive patient care in a private practice-like working relationship. Integral to the education of the Pacific dental hygiene student are the many extramural rotations that expose the students to a variety of populations. Students become accustomed to education and treatment of the elderly community, school-aged children, and those with special needs. Dental Hygiene students provide children with dental sealants, fluoride varnish and oral health education as part of their community outreach. True to the mission of the Dugoni School of Dentistry, these students are being prepared to be the oral health leaders of the future.
