2 Use of CAHAN The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) requires all states to have a Health Alert Network (HAN) CAHAN is the official Public Health Alerting System used and administered by the California Department of Public Health CAHAN use and training is available to local public health jurisdictions, hospitals, clinics, long-term care facilities, Indian health clinics, and other public health partners for emergency planning and response to public health events

3 CAHAN Purpose Support emergency preparedness planning and communication in preparation for and during a public health emergency Facilitate alerting, notification and collaboration between state, federal, local and other public health emergency preparedness partners on a 24/7/365 basis

4 CAHAN Overview CAHAN has a fully redundant system out of state CAHAN offers vertical and horizontal alerting There are over 33,000 participants on CAHAN

8 Alerts Alerts can be received multiple ways , portal, phone, alphanumeric pager, and fax Participants determine which way they want to receive alerts based on priority levels high, medium, and low level alerts Current alerts may be posted on the CAHAN portal

9 Alerts Examples of Health Alerts sent by CDPH Alerts/Advisories from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Information regarding natural or manmade event/disaster Guidance documents regarding public health events/emergencies The Licensing and Certification Program uses CAHAN to send All Facilities Letters (AFLs) to licensed health care facilities in California
