Team Review Carrollton, GA - The 2012 UWG baseball season could be summed up as the best of times and the worst of times, as the Wolves started hot to open the year, but injuries in key positions cooled off that hot start as West Georgia finished the season at 22-22 overall, including a 9-13 record in conference play. Through the first 21 games of the year, the Wolves were rolling with a 14-7 record overall and a 6-1 record in Gulf South Conference play. The 6-1 record included a sweep of Christian Brothers, winning 2-of-3 at West Alabama and the series opener against North Alabama. The team batting average through that span was.303, led by catcher Galen Smith s.366 average. On the pitching front, the Wolves were steamrolling opponents with a 3.63 team ERA and no weekend starter had an ERA of less than 3.00. But in the final two games of the series against UNA, the Wolves suffered a pair of devastating losses that changed the face of the season. In the final 23 games of the year, the UWG offense stayed steady at.303, but the output compared to opposing offenses suffered. The Wolves scored 106 runs in that span, but gave up 159 runs. West Georgia hit just six home runs, but gave up 17 and opponents hit.318 against the UWG pitching staff. Wright was a bright spot, hitting.400 down the stretch. In Gulf South Conference play during that final span, the Wolves split a two-game set with Valdosta, beat New Orleans in 2-of-3, but were swept by West Florida, Alabama-Huntsville and Delta State. Drew won the season batting title with a.345 batting average, just slipping by Smith, who finished the year at.344. Chase Riemer was the Wolves top starter, as he was 4-2 with a 4.40 ERA, striking out 33 batters while walking just 15. Head Coach Assistant Coach Skip Fite Head Baseball Coach Phone: 678-839-3956 Email: sfite@westga.edu Jeff Smith Assistant Coach Phone: 678-839-3956 Email: jwsmith@westga.edu In May of 2010, the University of West Georgia announced the appointment of Stanley Skip Fite as the Wolves new head baseball coach. Fite, 53, returned to the West Georgia family following 25 seasons as head coach at Augusta State University. We re very excited about the future of West Georgia Athletics, particularly our baseball program, said Daryl Dickey, UWG s interim athletic director. Coach Fite has an intimate knowledge of baseball in our state, an excellent reputation of working with student-athletes, and has been extensively involved with the NCAA structure. Dickey concluded, We look forward to supporting Coach Fite and giving him every opportunity to establish our program as one of the best in the country. Though at a cross-state rival for a quarter century, Fite is a part of West Georgia s successful baseball history. He served three seasons (1978-80) on the staff during a time in which West Georgia posted an overall record of 96-32, and twice appeared in the NCAA Tournament. Following his time at West Georgia, Fite moved to his first head coaching job at Brewton-Parker College in Mount Vernon, Ga. Following three seasons there, he moved to Augusta State in 1985. At ASU, he led the Jaguars to 623 victories in 25 years. This includes his 2004 team that posted a school record 38 victories, finished with a number 19 national ranking, and advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament. Fite s first season at the helm was the beginning of the rebuilding process, as his Wolves went 13-41. Despite the tough record and a schedule that featured multiple games against top-25 opponents, Fite and the Wolves came into the final weekend with an outside shot at making the GSC tournament for the first time since 2001. At season s end, senior shortstop Justin Smith was the lone UWG player to earn All-Gulf South Conference accolades. Beyond producing victories, Fite has also produced many players who enjoyed individual success. Six of Fite s former Augusta State players have been drafted by various major league organizations. This list includes Shannon Wilkerson, an outfielder at Augusta State who was named 2009 NCAA Division II Player of the Year, and who was chosen by the Boston Red Sox in the eighth round of the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft. Also, the Cleveland Indians chose Bryson Smith, another former Fite player, in the 30th round of the recent draft. Success was no stranger to Fite during his playing career. He earned All-America honors as a second baseman while performing for the legendary Tommy Thomas at Valdosta State. He helped the Blazers to a two-year record of 46-10 and a third place finish in the NCAA Tournament. Also, Fite briefly played professionally in the Minnesota Twins organization before starting his coaching career. Fite is a 1978 graduate of Valdosta State, where he earned a bachelor s degree in Health Science/Kinesiology. In 1981 he earned his master s degree from West Georgia in Physical Education. 18 West Georgia Wolves www.uwgsports.com University of West Georgia Head Baseball Coach Skip Fite added a new addition to the Wolves program. Fite named veteran Jeff Smith to fill a vacancy on the UWG coaching staff for the 2010-11 year. Smith came to West Georgia following five seasons on the staff at former GSC East rival Montevallo. He served the Falcons in a variety of capacities, including pitching coach, recruiting coordinator, and, briefly, interim head coach. Smith was part of one of the most successful runs in the history of Montevallo s program. In 2006 the Falcons finished third in the NCAA Division II World Series, and a year later the team advanced to the finals of the Division II South Central Region Tournament. Prior to his stint at Montevallo, Smith has a successful, six-year run as head coach Volunteer (Tenn.) State Community College. His teams posted a record of 225-123, and was ranked number one in the nation (NJCAA) for a part of the 2000 season. Smith has also been a head coach at the collegiate level. He spent three seasons (1997-99) as head coach at Tennessee Wesleyan, where he twice led the Bulldogs to tournament titles in the Tennessee Virginia Athletic Conference. UWG s newest coach is a 1990 graduate of Cumberland (Tenn.) University, where he heard a B.S. in Physical Education. He was also an accomplished performer for the Bulldogs, posting a 12-0 record as a pitcher during two seasons at Cumberland. Josh Clendenin Assistant Coach Clendenin came to the UWG roster after two seasons as a hitting coach and recruiter for Shorter University in Rome, GA. In his final season with the Hawks, he helped lead Shorter to its first conference tournament since the 2007 season. He was a part of a coaching staff that steered the Hawks to a.316 team batting average and more than a 10 percent increase in runs scored. That success led to an assistant coach position with the Amsterdam Mohawks of the New York Collegiate Summer Leage, winning both the regular season and postseason titles this past summer. Before his stint in Rome, Clendenin spent a top collegiate career with three different college teams. He started his career at College of Charleston in 2005, helping lead the team to a Southern Conference Championship. In the following season, he was voted as a junior college All-American as a catcher for Okaloosa Walton Community College. That landed him a spot on the roster at Stetson University, where he helped lead the Hatters an Atlantic Sun Conference Championship in 2007. Clendenin holds an Bachelor s Degree in Administration from Stetson University as well as an MBA from Shorter. He is single and hails from Kennesaw, GA. 18 UWG Baseball 19
Wolves Outfield Wolves Infield The outfield was played by seven players throughout the course of the season, with the majority of the starts coming from Tanner Drennan (LF - 15), Bradford Mattox (CF - 22), and Brett Wright (RF - 35). Evan Hester also made 34 starts in the outfield with 28 starts in LF and six while playing CF. Between these four players there only two errors committed while combining to score 62 runs for the season. After the season concluded, it was announced that Evan Hester was the lone representative from UWG on the Gulf South Conference First Team for the 2012 season. The junior from Kennesaw was a very versatile player for head coach Skip Fite this season, as Hester started 12 games behind the dish to go along with the outfield starts. He had 15 multiple hit games throughout the year and 13 multiple RBI games, both at or near the top of the list for the Wolves. Gulf South Conference Academic excellence, 45 National Championships and a leadership role in the NCAA s Division II make the Gulf South Conference (GSC) something special. The GSC is a charter Division II member and enters its 42nd year as one of the premier conferences at any NCAA level. In the summer of 1970, six college presidents met to talk about athletics; when the meeting ended, a new league emerged the Mid-South Conference started by, and to this day run by, the CEOs, the first in NCAA history. It is that CEO-control and involvement that makes the league work and its 14 championships (football; men s & women s cross country, men s & women s soccer; volleyball, men s & women s basketball, men s & women s tennis, men s & women s golf; softball and baseball) so bitterly contested in a collegial manner. From that point forward, the GSC has been giant steps ahead of the Division II pack. Dating back to 1997, the league has found neutral sites paying sizeable guarantees for most of its team championships. NCAA Conventions regularly feature GSC-proposed or -inspired legislation. No one wins more regionals or earns more NCAA post-season bids. In 2004, the league purchased its own new construction office space. But the crowning moment came in 2005-06, when the GSC debuted its highly successful GSC-TV Live package which included nine football games and its men s & women s basketball tournament finals. Add to that its web-tv show, GSC Sports Weekly, and the broadbanding of most of its championships and you can see why the GSC is a Conference paving the way into the 21st century. We take pride in our 45 National Team Championships in 12 sports and more than 100 regional titles, especially because there is no sacrifice on the academic side, where GSC student-athletes regularly earn Academic All- America. The Conference added two more Titles in 2010-11 with Valdosta State claiming its second Men s Tennis Crown in five years and West Florida winning its first-ever Baseball National Title. Delta State, Florence State (now North Alabama), Jacksonville State, Livingston (now West Alabama), Tennessee-Martin and Troy State were the charter members. Scheduling problems for the 1970-71 academic year limited the GSC to football, won by Jacksonville State. In 1971, the addition of Southeast Louisiana (SELA) and Nicholls State increased the membership to eight. The league opened an office in Hammond, LA, changed its name to the Gulf South Conference and began championships in nine men s sports. Mississippi College and Northwestern Louisiana (now Northwestern State) joined in 1972 and two years later, NWLA left for Division I with SELA and Nicholls State following in 1979. 28 West Georgia Wolves www.uwgsports.com The conference continued with seven teams until 1981, when the CEOs admitted Valdosta State, followed by West Georgia (1983). In 1991, Tennessee-Martin and Troy State went Division I, briefly dropping the GSC back to seven members. An aggressive expansion under the guidance of new Commissioner Nate Salant resulted in 10 new members: Lincoln Memorial (1992-93); Alabama-Huntsville, Henderson State, Central Arkansas and Mississippi University for Women (MUW in 1993-94); West Florida (1994-95); and Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Tech, Montevallo and Southern Arkansas (1995-96). Jacksonville State went Division I at the end of 1992-93 and Mississippi College dropped to Division III at the end of 1995-96, only to be replaced by Christian Brothers to keep the Conference at 16 schools. In July 2000, the GSC welcomed Harding University and Ouachita Baptist University, making it the largest NCAA conference at any level with 18 schools. MUW dropped its athletics program at the end of the 2002-03 season, decreasing the membership to 17. The Conference decreased to 15 teams in 2006-07 when Central Arkansas moved to Division I and Lincoln Memorial made a geographicallybased switch to the South Atlantic Conference, then 14 after Montevallo departed for the Peach Belt Conference. The GSC went away from divisional play after the 2010-11 season when its six Arkansas members broke away, dropping the membership to eight. The Conference did not wait long to implement an aggressive expansion plan which quickly bore fruit when the University of New Orleans was unanimously approved as its ninth member in June, 2011. UNO becomes a full member in the GSC in 2012-13 after limited participation in volleyball, cross country, golf and baseball in 2011-12. The GSC took another step in bolstering its membership after sponsoring the Division II applications of Union University (TN) and Shorter University (GA) which were accepted into the NCAA reclassifying process in July of 2011, and will enter the GSC process this fall. Former Commissioner Jim McCullough brought the GSC office to Birmingham. Current Commissioner, Nate Salant began his tenure in October, 1992. He is assisted by Assistant Commissioner for Media and Public Affairs Michael Anderson, Assistant Sports Information Director Albert A.A. Moore and Senior Woman Administrator Andrea Anderson. The Chairman of the GSC Board of Directors is Dr. William Cale (North Alabama). Joining him on the executive committee are Vice-Chair Dr. Judith Bense (West Florida) and Past-Chair Dr. Beheruz Sethna (West Georgia). The Supervisors of Officials are Jeff Roberson (Football), John Caldwell (Basketball) and Mike Murphy (Basketball).
