Teacher of the Month Director of Administration Color Pencil and Animal Drawing Instructor Lisa Barnes Lisa has been one of the student s favorite teachers. She is full of joy, and brings the best out of each student. You can walk in her classroom and the kids are full of giggles. Lisa also works hard in Administration. She puts a lot of hours in after she leaves the school. Her desire is that the kids will love art and do well. Lisa has been working with MSOA since Fall 2004 but has had a passion for the arts from a very young age. She started drawing from a book of animals as a child and hasn't stopped working on art since. Another one of her passions is writing, and has had a poem published in the National Library of Poetry. She is currently working on a variety of writing projects including, but not limited to, her first novel and her first children's book. Cartooning is also a passion and she now has her own cartoon strip called Lucy-Goosey, which is published on her personal website. She loves a variety of art mediums, but Color Pencil and Animal Drawing are two of her favorites. You can see samples of her artwork in the art gallery. "I feel truly blessed to be a part of Masters School of Art and I look forward to learning more how I can use my art for Christ. Evie Notes: Educating Kids to use their Creative Side of the Brain The double-dominant, and/or the right-brained individuals are generally labeled ADD, dyslexic, and similar disabilities. The disability may not be the real culprit. Rather, these geniuses restless minds broke up the monotony of rote learning by stirring up a little excitement. In spite of challenging the education system, these geniuses often succeeded because they were passionate and confident and were self-directed learners. If students have the basic nuts and bolts to learning, they will have the tools to be successful. It all starts with three necessary components: passion, self-respect, and applied learning. Passion is the drive that gives them the energy to reach their goals. Self-respect is valuing themselves and feeling worthwhile, loved and confident in their gifted abilities. Applied learning (self-directed) is the adventure of discovering information and working hard to reach their goals. This is important to all brain dominance types, and particularly to the right-brainers who base much of their learning on emotion and experience. The great masters, Isaac Newton, Einstein, Faraday, and artists such as Rembrant were double-dominant, meaning they had a good left and a good right brain. They were global brain thinkers. They had the ability to abstract think in symbols on the left and abstract right side of the brain in patterns and design. They had a visual picture of the abstract left such as complex math. Unfortunately most educations develop the left side of the brain. To have a solid education both sides of the brain need to be developed. It is important to give your children the opportunity to develop the right creative side of their brain. Most parents believe they are giving a good education to their kids, because their children take music lessons or sports. Music is good as the right side of the brain comes in where the need is for rhythm. But, most of music is linear learning, and mathematical. Sports is a good team activity that uses both brains, but it is not what develops the right side of the brain. To give children a good right-brain education, it is necessary to introduce them to the Fine arts. Crafts, however, is not fine arts. It is what I call a left side of the brain linear, one, two and three approach form of art. If you do this then you get this result. Creative writing, more of a free write, is a great right-brain exercise. Self-directed learners, who are fueled by passion, are more apt to develop the right side of their brain. Praise is fuel to inspire the self-directed learner. With all that said, Masters School of Art can be a good resource to inspire your children to becoming self-directed learners and to become whole brain thinkers. Classes in the fine arts, or the creative writing classes will help children to prepare for a future that involves more than just a leftbrain job. It is helping them to become global brain thinkers, and to become one of the great inventors, or leaders that our country desperately needs. 2014 MASTERS SCHOOL OF ART, All Rights Reserved 7 6
