Summer 2015 Greetings! There s more to MIAD s Summer Pre-College Program than just classes! The Student Life Staff looks forward to providing fun and relaxation for residential students after classes and on weekends, and there couldn t be a better place than Milwaukee to do this. This is a vibrant and exciting city that can feel both big and small. It pulses with the beat of music from its Summer Festivals, and its numerous art galleries, artists studios, dance companies and theatres testify to this community s enthusiasm for the arts. To make the most of the Pre-College experience, professors encourage their students to spend some time in open evening studios to continue work on projects. We promise to support this in every way, and there will be Resident Assistants and Teaching Assistants available to help with evening studio questions. No homework? Lots of special programs will be offered as options for the residential students. Our Student Life Staff is committed to making this an exceptional summer learning experience, and we look forward to your visit. MIAD s Two50Two Student Apartments MIAD s new apartment-style residence hall, TWO50TWO, is just across from the college s main academic building. The progressive-style building with sustainable systems and details is in close proximity to students studios and classrooms in the creative atmosphere of the Historic Third Ward. It features: Five floors of housing above a ground floor with 5,780 square feet of retail space 75 fully furnished two-bedroom suites, each accommodating four students with a living room, kitchen and two bathrooms Amenities in each suite include a twin bed, nightstand, three-drawer dresser, desk and chair for each student; flat-screen LED TVs, couch, chair and end tables in the living room; and a refrigerator and microwave. THE BASICS ARRIVING FROM THE AIRPORT? Residents landing at General Mitchell Field will need to arrange their transportation from the airport to Two50Two the MIAD Residence Hall (252 E. Menomonee St.). Although there are many options, including taxicabs, MIAD students frequently make door-to-door reservations through the airport shuttle. For information and reservations, contact 414-769-2444 or visit http://www.goriteway.com NO CARS PLEASE! Residential Students may not bring a car to the Pre-College program. IDENTIFICATION All residents will receive an ID, and are required to show it when asked. This is for everyone s safety. LAUNDRY Facilities to wash and dry clothes are on each residential floor. A laundry card machine is located in the first floor lobby. Each laundry card requires a cash depositi of $10, money then needs to be loaded onto the laundry card. Washers cost $1.50/load and dryers cost $1.00. SECURITY & SAFETY The entrance to the Residence Hall is kept locked at all times. Students are issued a fob which opens the lobby door, and a room key. Replacement cost for a lost key or fob is $50. Students leaving the residence hall for evening activities will be required to sign in and out with a Pre-College staff member. A security guard is posted at the Residence Hall during hours that the Academic Building is closed. Common sense and mature actions are the best safety rules. Keep the following tips in mind: Carry your keys and student ID at all times. Copy ALL IDs or Credit/Debit cards. Give copies to family for easy reporting in the event of loss or theft. Do not walk alone at night. Keep your art supplies with you, or in your locker. Lock your room when it is unoccupied. Remember to keep your keys with you at all times. Record serial numbers and engrave valuable personal items before arriving on campus. Report any suspicious individuals or activities to the RA s, Hall Director, or Residence Hall Security immediately. GETTING ABOUT Residents receive a city bus pass with their student ID that provides free transportation throughout the duration of the Pre-College program. The bus pass will be used extensively for RA programs and classes as you explore Milwaukee. MIAD PRE-COLLEGE HOUSING HANDBOOK 4

THE RULES POLICIES & PROCEDURES The residence hall staff at MIAD wants you to enjoy your stay in Milwaukee and experience its many unique attractions. We also want to provide you with a safe and comfortable living environment. In order to do so, we must ask for your help through understanding and complying with the following residence hall rules: GENERAL The resident accepts the responsibility for the care and cleaning of his/her room and maintenance of health and safety standards therein. MIAD assumes no responsibility for theft, loss or damage to a resident s personal property, nor is MIAD responsible for property left after termination of residency. Residents should not bring valuables to the program, or should purchase insurance to cover loss or damage to personal property if they do. Students are prohibited from returning to the residence hall during the instructional day. Authorization from the Residence Hall Director is required for all exceptional circumstances. Male students are prohibited from visiting the female rooms. Female students are prohibited from visiting the male rooms. Violators could be dismissed from the program. ACTIVITIES and SIGN-OUT/SIGN-IN PROCEDURES Students must sign in and out in the binders located at the front desk for departures for, and return from, authorized activities. There are 3 activity sign-out options: Parent Absence, Buddy, and RA Parent s Permission for Absence Parents may sign their child in and out of the Residence Hall. Permission forms are located in the Residence Hall Handbook, and are downloadable from www.miad.edu/precollege. The completed form must be delivered to the Residence Hall Director by 2pm the day before child s expected departure date. Buddy Sign-Out Students may sign out with one another during the weekends (Saturday and Sunday). Students who leave the residence hall together MUST return together. NO EXCEPTIONS. Students who disobey this rule will be denied any further Buddy Sign-Out privileges for the remainder of the program. In addition, ALL Buddy Sign-Outs must consist of either two girls or two boys; it is unacceptable for a boy and girl to sign out together. Groups larger than three students may have any combination of males and females. Buddy Sign Out is only an option during weekends,not weekdays, and is granted on weekends resulting from good behavior during weekdays. RA Sign-Out Resident Assistants host programs on week nights and week ends that provide recreation and relaxation. Milwaukee has much to offer, and RAs are excited about the opportunity to introduce students to this city. Since RA s are responsible for keeping track of the students who attend his or her program, they will collect the students IDs, and end each program, in the residence hall, by handing back each students ID. No student is allowed to leave the Residence Hall alone under ANY circumstance. MIAD PRE-COLLEGE HOUSING HANDBOOK 5

ALCOHOL, DRUGS, & SMOKING Prohibited at ALL times. The consumption, use, possession, manufacture or distribution of alcohol, illegal drugs, or drug paraphernalia by Pre-College students is prohibited on and off campus. Students found providing access to any illegal substance(s) will be removed from the MIAD Pre-College program immediately. MIAD is a smoke-free campus; this does include the Residence Hall. Students of all ages, including 18 years and older, are expected to remain smoke-free during the three weeks of the MIAD Pre-College program. APPLIANCES Please do not bring any kitchen appliances with you. All residential students receive a seven-day meal plan. CURFEW and COURTESY The city of Milwaukee has an 11:00 p.m. curfew for all minors. All Pre-College students, including those who are 18 or older, must be inside the Residence Hall and on their appropriate floor by 10:00 p.m. for curfew check-in with their RA s. The Milwaukee Police Department and the student s parents/guardians will be notified within an hour after a curfew violation. Students who violate the curfew will be dismissed from residency during the Pre- College program and a parent/guardian will need to pick up the student within 24 hours of the violation. The only exception to curfew is when a group of students are attending an RA program. Upon arrival, the RA hosting the activity must sign everyone in with the binders, and bring all residents to the evening curfew meeting for check-in. Lights Out Policy The Pre-College program is not a camp. It is designed for students who are committed to extending their knowledge and passion for the visual arts. It is important that students arrive in their classrooms alert and ready to explore and create each morning. Therefore a midnight lights-out policy is enforced on weekday nights and 1:00 a.m. lights-out on weekends. Quiet Hours and Courtesy Hours During Quiet Hours, residents noise may not extend beyond the boundaries of the room they are in at the time. Hall Quiet Hours Sunday-Thursday = 11 p.m. to 10 a.m. Friday-Saturday = 12 midnight to 10 a.m. Courtesy Hours are in effect at all other times. Courtesy Hours mean that any resident has the right to ask someone to turn down the noise. Residents are expected to comply with all requests from fellow residents, as well as college staff. The MIAD policy is that the right to sleep and study supersedes the privilege to entertain at all times. Stereo/Sound Equipment Large speakers and amplifiers are prohibited in the residence hall. Residents who bring oversized speakers or amplifiers will be required to remove them from the Hall within 48 hours. Headphones are required for listening to all sound equipment at all times. DESTRUCTION, DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR, & VANDALISM Destruction and/or vandalism of dorm or student property, or disruptive and/or disrespectful behavior toward anyone affiliated with the Pre-College Residence Hall is absolutely prohibited. Destruction, disruptive behavior, and vandalism include, but are not limited to: Any form of activity or recreation that cause disruption or damages to the building or residents. Creating conditions that are unsafe for yourself and/or other residents. Pranks that cause property damage, personal harm to others, or involve entering another resident s room without permission, as well as prank phone calls, are prohibited at all times. Destroying any part of the physical building: walls, floors, ceilings, furniture, lights and other appliances. Theft or misuse of another person s property or the Residence Hall property. Vandalizing any part of the physical building and/or residents belongings, via: graffiti, litter, or forceful object. Verbal, physical, or written threats, intimidations, or coercion of any member of the MIAD Residence Hall. Any sexual activity detected by the Summer Pre-College staff will be grounds for automatic dismissal. Weapons of any kind are prohibited; possession of any weaponry will result in eviction from the MIAD Residence Hall: firearms, ammunition, paint pellet weapons, archery equipment, etc. A Damages report will be provided upon move-in. Please note that any damages found during or immediately following the stay of a resident will result in financial liability. GRAFFITI MIAD has a strict No Tolerance policy regarding graffiti. MIAD complies with the applicable Wisconsin State statute, which defines graffiti as Criminal damage to property. (1) Whoever intentionally causes damage to any physical property of another person without the person s consent is guilty... of a misdemeanor or felony. MIAD further defines this activity thus: Graffiti is any alteration of any surface of MIAD s facilities, of another resident s, staff s, or faculty member s personal belongings (including art or design work) without express prior approval by the property owner. Graffiti is considered a very serious offense at MIAD. Anyone engaged in this activity will face a disciplinary hearing and dismissal from MIAD s Pre-College Program. GUESTS/VISITORS No guests or visitors are allowed past the lobby at any time; this includes parents, legal guardians, and/or other family members. Residents may come down to the lobby and meet their guests/visitors. If leaving the premises, residents must provide proper documentation prior to departure, as well as sign out in the parent absence binder. PERMISSION FORMS (see Activities, Sign-Out Procedures ) - Students may leave the Residence Hall if, and only if, a parent/legal guardian has granted permission. Permission forms must be e-mailed to the Hall Director, or delivered to the MIAD Residence Hall by 2:00 p.m. the day before desired departure. This rule applies to all Pre-College students, regardless of age. All students must return to the Residence Hall before 10:00 p.m. curfew on planned date of return. The Pre-College security guards will not allow anyone to enter the building after curfew. Failure to return before curfew will result in the legal parent or guardian who signed the student out resuming responsibility of student until 9:00 a.m. the following morning. A legal parent or guardian s failure to consent to the absence request will result in the resident not being allowed to leave the residence hall. MIAD PRE-COLLEGE HOUSING HANDBOOK 7

LOCKS AND KEYS Residents are responsible for the proper use and security of all keys and fobs issued to them by the residence hall staff. It is a violation of department, campus, and state code to misuse or to duplicate any Residence Hall keys. If a resident misplaces or loses their keys during the Pre-College program, a fee of $50 per key will be issued. RESTRICTED AREAS OF RESIDENCE HALL We invite you to relax in your room, suite, common lounge and recreation area. Pre-College students are separated by gender. Students are expected to honor this policy by not entering the areas assigned to opposite sex residents. Violators will be dismissed from the residence hall, and a parent or guardian will be expected to pick them up within 24 hours of the violation. ROOM ASSIGNMENTS AND CHANGES MIAD reserves all rights involving the assignment of rooms. Only members of the Student Services staff may make changes in space assignments. Any resident whose actions, in the judgment of the appropriate MIAD official, are found to be detrimental to the welfare of the general living environment may be required to relocate to another space, or vacate the Residence Hall. MIAD reserves the right to search rooms in cases where there is reasonable suspicion that a MIAD policy is being, or has been, violated. Residents need not be present when a search is conducted. SICKNESS/ILLNESS PROCEDURES If a student is sick at the residence hall and cannot attend class, he or she needs to inform an RA. If a student becomes sick while at MIAD for classes, he or she needs to check in with the Pre-College office, located in room 275. Students will be taken to the sick room until the end of the day when it is time to go back to the residence hall. If a student needs to go to the doctor or the hospital, the Pre-College office will arrange for an RA to escort them, and will contact the student s parent or guardian. SPORTS IN THE HALL No objects may be thrown at other people, into or out of windows and doorways, or in any interior areas of the residence hall. Civil law also states that throwing a harmful object is considered assault and battery, which may be either a misdemeanor or a felony. Sport and recreational activities that involve a ball or other airborne objects are prohibited in the interior of the building, as are roller blades, ice skates, & metal cleats. Steel tipped darts are also prohibited. Skateboarding, sparring, fencing, and other such activities are prohibited in the building at all times.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF HOUSING CONTRACT I have read and understand all of the information in the Student Housing Handbook. I further understand that if I am 18 years or older, all of the policies, rules and regulations in the handbook apply to me while I am part of the Pre-College program. I therefore understand that I may be dismissed from the Residence Hall and Pre-College Program when any of the following have occurred: Theft of school or other student s property Abuse of MIAD or Residence Hall equipment Vandalism of MIAD, Residence Hall, or student property Possession and/or use of drugs or alcohol, ON or OFF school property Disorderly conduct Disruption of class Any additional violation of Residence Hall, School Policy, or local, state, and federal laws. In addition, Residential students, including those 18 years and older, can incur dismissal for: Violation of Curfew (10 p.m.) Departure from the Residence Hall in violation of the release policy Unauthorized guests at Residence Hall and/or MIAD. This is to certify that I have read the information contained in the Student Housing Handbook. I agree to conform to the policies and regulations of Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design. I understand that any violation may result in immediate dismissal from the residence hall and program with forfeit of all scholarship, tuition, supplies, room and board costs, and that parents must pick up residential students within 24 hours of dismissal. PARENT PERMISSION FOR ABSENCE FORM - RESIDENCE HALL Parent Permission for Absence means that a student s legal guardian may allow their son/daughter to leave the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design s Residence Hall. A parent may choose to expedite this process by notating multiple sign out days and times for their student, if applicable. For instance, if a student has a job on the weekends, his/her parent may choose to grant permission for their child to leave and indicate that on the form, below. Parents must also indicate who will be picking up their son/daughter, as well as dropping them off. Likewise, the student will note the information below on the Parent Absence Sign Out sheet located in the binder that they will use at the front desk. Any student who returns from a Parent Absence after the return time designated on this absence form MUST check in with the Residence Hall Director. * Please note, if a student does NOT return to the Residence Hall before curfew (10:00 p.m.), then they are to remain under their parent s care until class the next morning, or 9:00.a.m. The Residential Staff will not be responsible for any student who returns from their Parent Absence time after curfew.
