1 Housing Information General The Athens State University dormitory (Sanders Hall) is located on the university campus and is within walking distance to classrooms, the library, the Student Center and the gymnasium. The campus is convenient to banks, restaurants, supermarkets, drugstores and recreational facilities. The rooms are fully carpeted and air conditioned. Residents have the use of a recreation room, vending machines, television lounge, coin-operated laundry and visitor lounge. Eligibility Residence in Athens State University housing is a privilege. The University reserves the right to determine eligibility and suitability for campus housing. Campus housing is maintained for single male and single female students. No person under the age of eighteen will be eligible for campus housing. Priority consideration for occupancy will be given to full-time Athens State University degree seeking students. Housing eligibility may be terminated when a student s courseload drops below twelve credit hours per semester and/ or when the student fails to make satisfactory progress toward graduation. Application Procedures Campus housing spaces are limited. Priority to eligible applicants is based on the date of the application. Applications received after all available spaces have been reserved will be assigned to a waiting list. Notification of room assignments will be issued prior to the beginning of the term for which the application is made. Applicants are requested to notify the Housing Office if an assignment is to be cancelled. Failure to do so will result in denial of subsequent consideration of an application. The Housing Office will cancel any assignment not confirmed by the date shown on the assignment notice. Applications for housing, may be obtained in the Student Center or Sanders Hall and Dormitory Registration Forms may be obtained in the Housing Office and the Dormitory. Keys will be issued in Sanders Hall when you check in. All fees are to be paid in the Business Office. Room Changes Efforts will be made to assign roommates who are compatible. Students who wish to room together should so indicate on their applications and apply about the same time if possible. Requests for changes in rooms and/ or roommates will be accepted up to fifteen days after the first day of classes for each semester. Requests must be submitted to the Housing Coordinator in writing and the reason for the requested change must be stated. The Athens State University administration reserves the right to make changes in room assignments as deemed necessary and/or appropriate. 41

2 Guests In Rooms Residents will be permitted to have overnight guests of the same sex in their rooms only if prior approval is obtained through the Housing Coordinator or the Resident Manager. Semester Breaks And Holidays Sanders Hall will be closed during the Christmas holidays, Spring Break, and between semesters. Students should arrange for other living accommodations during these scheduled time periods. The Athens State University administration reserves the right to close Sanders Hall for periodic maintenance inspections and repairs. Room rental rates do not include holidays and breaks between semesters. Charges Double Room Single Occupancy $ per semester Double Room Double Occupancy $ per semester Single Room Single Occupancy $ per semester Rental charges are to be paid on a semester basis. Charges for each semester is due and payable at the time tuition is due. Financial Aid recipients are responsible for payment of any charges not covered by financial aid at the time tuition is due. Damage Deposit $75.00 Payable upon initial occupancy and refundable upon termination of occupancy provided no damage has been charged. Refunds will be issued within four weeks. Key Replacement Fee $ 5.00 Keys issued to residents upon Check-In remain the property of Athens State University and are not to be duplicated. Residents will be charged for replacement of any lost or misplaced keys or keys not returned upon checkout. Lock Out Fee $ 2.00 If residents become locked out of their rooms and the Resident Manager or assistants are required to unlock the door, the resident may be charged for the service. Room Care And Damages Each resident will be held directly responsible for the care and cleanliness of the interiors of rooms and will accept full responsibility for the care and custody of the property in the assigned rooms. Damages to rooms and/or property in the rooms will be charged to the room occupants. Payment for damages will be deducted from the resident s $75.00 damage deposit. If the 42

3 assessed damage exceeds $75.00, the occupant will be required to pay the amount in excess of $ Residents will be held responsible for damage done by their guests. Residents will be held responsible for damages to public rooms, including bathrooms and hallways. If damage occurs in a common area and the person(s) responsible cannot be identified, the cost of the damage will be shared by the group(s) involved. Furniture in the rooms is not to be transferred from one room to another. Missing or disassembled inventory will be considered room damage. Any furnishings not provided by the university are not to be placed in the rooms and rooms are not to be painted except by permission from the Housing Office. Painting rooms without permission will be considered room damage. Nails, screws, tacks, and hooks are not to be driven into the walls, ceilings, floors, furniture, or woodwork. Decals are not to be placed on mirrors, walls, and doors. Residents who leave personal property in the rooms upon Check- Out will be charged for removal of such property. The cost of removal will be considered Room Damage. Room Checks And Inspections The Athens State University administration reserves the right to enter the dormitory rooms at any time for the purpose of inspecting, protecting or maintaining property and for the purpose of promoting the safety and wellbeing of all concerned. Visitation Schedules And Policies General Visitation Schedule: Visitation privileges are granted for residents and nonresidents to visit the rooms of residents according to the following schedule: Monday - Sunday... 12:00 Noon to 12:00 Midnight Permission is granted for Sanders Hall male residents and female residents may visit the rooms of other female residents at any time, provided all other housing rules are observed. Male residents may visit the rooms of other male residents and female 43

4 residents may visit the rooms of other female residents at any time, provided all other housing rules are observed. Quiet hours will begin each evening at 10:00 p.m. Each Resident and Guest Will Abide by the Following Policies: The door of each room must remain open and the lights on when a visitor is present. No person under the age of 18 will be permitted as a visitor unless they are a family member of a resident The Resident Manager may request proof of age if necessary. The Resident Manager must be notified. All residents and guests will conduct themselves in an orderly and polite manner. Loud, rude, or disorderly conduct will not be tolerated. Guests must exit the rooms no later than the end of visitation hours as scheduled. Residents will be held responsible for the behavior of their guests. Guests will not be allowed to visit rooms in the absence of the resident(s). Use Of Public Rooms Public rooms, including parlors, lobbies, and lounges, may be used by residents and their guests. Activity in public rooms is to be confined to such a nature as not to disturb or interfere with the welfare of other residents. Any student and/or guest who behaves in a disruptive manner or fails to respond to the directions of the Resident Manager, and/or assistants will be subject to disciplinary actions. Television Room Schedule:Daily... 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 midnight Laundry Room Schedule:Daily... 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 midnight Recreation/Vending Room Schedule: Vending machines will be available for use at all times. Game equipment will be locked daily at 12:00 midnight. The Resident Manager will reserve the right to extend Quiet Hours during scheduled final examination periods. 44

5 Emergency Procedures The Resident Manager and/or assistant(s) on duty will be notified of any emergency situation which the university administration deems threatening to the welfare and safety of residents. Failure of any student to cooperate with university officials during an emergency situation will be cause for disciplinary action and/or suspension. Telephones Resident Manager or Campus Extension 147 Housing Coordinator Fire Safety Fire drill regulations will be provided by the Resident Manager and assistants and regular fire drills will be conducted during each academic year. Residents will familiarize themselves with fire regulations, locations of fire exits, locations of fire alarms, and locations of fire extinguishers. In the event of fire, notify the Resident Manager or assistants or pull the fire alarm or call the Athens Fire Department at Residents will adhere to the following fire safety measures at all times: Cooking is not permitted in the rooms. Smoking is not permitted inside the dorm. Do not smoke in bed. Do not throw flammable items in trash piles or waste cans. Use sandbuckets and ash trays to dispose of cigarettes. Do not keep inflammable materials in the rooms (gas, turpentine, etc.) Unplug all electrical appliances when not in use. (Hair dryers, irons, etc.) Avoid use of improper connections and alteration of electrical wiring. Report defective wiring to the Resident Manager or assistants. Tampering with fire alarms, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, and other emergency equipment is prohibited. Violators will be subject to disciplinary action and/or suspension. 45

6 Medical Emergencies In the event of an emergency requiring medical attention, residents will notify the Resident Manager or assistants. If the condition warrants the Resident Manager will arrange for emergency transportation and medical treatment. Parents and/or guardians will also be notified. Rules, Regulations And Policies Each resident, by signing the Housing Registration Form, agrees to abide by the rules, regulations and policies established by the Athens Sate University administration as necessary to maintain an environment conducive to effective studying as well as comfortable living: 1. Visitation hours will be strictly observed. 2. Quiet hours will be strictly observed. 3. Emergency procedures will be strictly observed. 4. Loud, rude, and/or disorderly conduct will not be tolerated at any time. 5. Stereos, radios, televisions and/or other sound equipment are to be played at room listening volume. Speakers are not to be placed in or near windows and doors. Sound equipment is to be turned off when no one is in the room. 6. Residents will not be permitted to have overnight guests in their rooms except by prior permission through the Housing Office of the Resident Manager. 7. Appropriate dress is required in the public rooms. 8. Incense/candles burning is prohibited. 9. Pets are not allowed in Sanders Hall. 10. Water beds are not permitted in Sanders Hall. 11. Unauthorized telephone connections and/or telephones are prohibited. 12. Trash and food containers are not to be left in public areas except when deposited in proper receptacles. 13. Permission is granted to store and/or lock bicycles only in the bicycle rack provided for this purpose. Bicycles are not to be placed in the rooms, hallways, or public rooms. 14. Athens State University is not responsible for loss or damage due to negligence in securing personal property. Doors must be locked securely and residents must carry their keys with them when leaving their rooms. 15. Residents will conduct themselves in such a manner as not to violate any rule, regulation, or policy as established by Athens State University and as referred to in this publication under the headings: University Regulations: (1) General (B) Major Infractions. 46

7 Violation of any rule, regulation, or policy as established by Athens State University and/or failure to cooperate with and/or respond to the direction of any university official will result in disciplinary actions, loss of housing privileges, and/ or expulsion. Major Infractions Which May Cause Immediate Expulsion And Permanent Loss Of Housing Privileges Are: 1. Possession of or being under the influence of alcoholic beverages in Sanders Hall. Students will be held responsible for alcohol beverages and illegal drugs found in their room. 2. Theft 3. Failure to adhere to instructions of Resident Manager and/or resident assistants. 4. Pulling of fire alarms. 5. Loud, rude, and disorderly conduct. 6. Blatant violation of the visitation policy. 7. Vandalism 8. Violence/possession of a weapon Students whose housing privileges are suspended because of a major infraction will not become eligible for reinstatement of housing privileges for a period of a minimum of one academic year pending a successful appeal for reinstatement. Tobacco Use Policy Smoking within all ASU buildings is prohibited. This policy is applicable to all lobbies, public areas, classrooms, and offices located on the ASU campus. Housing Personnel Campus housing is a division of the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs. The Dean of Student Affairs is the Executive Officer. Housing is administered by the Housing Coordinator. The designated administrative representative in Sanders Hall is the Resident Manager. The Resident Manager is added by Resident Assistants. The Resident Manager serves as counselor and advisor to the residents and the dormitory cabinet. The Resident Manager and assistants are available to be of service to residents in all phases of campus life including but not limited to the knowledge and implementation of the 47

8 Student Handbook in those areas applicable to resident living. Any student who at any time fails to cooperate with or respond to the directions of the Resident Manager and/or assistants will be subject to disciplinary actions, loss of housing privileges, and/or suspension. Sanders Hall residents will be represented by a cabinet to serve during the academic year for the purpose of providing adequate lines of communication between the resident student, the Student Government Association, and the university administration. Each cabinet will be elected by the residents and will consist of a President, Floor Representatives, the Resident Assistants, and the Resident Manager. The Resident Manager will serve as advisor to the cabinet and the cabinet will not meet without the presence of the advisor. A Secretary will be appointed within the cabinet to keep records of meetings. The cabinet will develop a yearly calendar of events and suggest methods of securing adequate budgets for activities. Residents are requested to follow a line of communication beginning with the Dormitory Cabinet for the purpose of resolving routine issues and concerns The entire Housing staff wishes to be of service to all residents and to provide assistance to all students in their adjustment to campus life.
