President Per Rune Eknes When the five Norwegian swimmers enter the pool deck at the 8th World Short course Championships, they will not be alone. Out of the 191 FINA member nations, no less than 129 nations will participate at the championships in Shanghai. Norway has never taken any medals at these championships but both Elin Austevoll (1999) and Aleksander Hetland (2004) came close. Both earning a fourth place in their favourite event. A championship for records The World short course Championships always bring a lot of records. The last championships have provided us with something close to 20 new world records. The upcoming championships in Shanghai will be the biggest ever and surely we are aloud to hope for more world records. The next time the worlds best swimmers meet up again will be at the world long course championships in Melbourne April 2007. Temporary pools Like the previous championships the athletes will compete in so called temporary pools. These are pools built up just for the occasion of this exact event. This is something witch was started already at the first world short course championships held at Palma de Mallorca in 1993. And when the championship was held at the Copa Cabana beach in Rio de Janeiro in 1995, we witnessed a truly spectacular event. This year s pool and arena is built inside the Qizhong Stadium and includes two short course pools. One for the competition and one for warm up. The stadium has a capacity of 15.000 spectators. We are really looking forward to this! Side 4
Sports Manager Petter Løvberg After having good progress in the last two international championships, I feel that I am entitled to look forward to the championships in Shanghai with high hopes. The last test for the team was the short course nationals in Kristiansand the first week in March. The swimmers did very well there, especially when we know that they just arrived home from a two week tough training camp in Thailand. Alexander Dale Oen in particular swam exceptionally well considering the hard training period he had been trough. Aleksander Hetland who is now studying and swimming in Texas (Southern Methodist University), also did well at the NCAA at the end of March. He will be looking to repeat his good performances from the last championship in Indianapolis in 2004. Swimmers full of expectations All but one of the Norwegian swimmers have been fit and healthy for a long period now and it is a team with high hopes and lots of enthusiasm who is looking forward to get in the water in Shanghai. Personal best The main object of focus is to do personal bests each time they get into the water. If they succeed in doing so, both semi-finals and finales are within reach. We have a strong belief that the swimmers are capable of doing their best ever performances in Shanghai. Side 5
Indianapolis i 2004 The last time the World Short course championships were held, Norway had only two swimmers qualified, Gard Kvale from Bergens Svømme Club and Aleksander Hetland from Bærumsvømmerne. And as many may remember it was Hetlands big breakthrough in international swimming. He showed early on in the competitions that he was in good shape, breaking the national record two times at the 100 breaststroke and swimming his first ever final at the event. His breakthrough achievement came in the 100 medley were he broke two more national records and touched in to a historic 4th place in the final. That was then the best ever result by a male Norwegian swimmer. Hetland broke another national record at the 50 breaststroke, taking his total up to five national records during those five days in Indianapolis in October 2004. It was the home nation s championships from start to end. Taking 21 out of 40 gold medals, they really left a gap between them and the other nations. Three of the gold medal events were also world record runs. Both Ian Crocker on the 50 butterfly and Aron Piershol on 200 backstroke broke the world record. The third world record came in the men s 400 medley relay. Australian Brooke Hanson became the championship queen with five individual gold medals and a gold and world record on the women s 400 medley relay. Aleksander Hetland flies high in Indianapolis 2004 Side 6
