Solution: Construction of 13 universities, creating facilities for over 121,000 students to live and study on campus. The Ethiopian construction industry is modernised, making it more competitive at home and abroad. In addition, cost-effective construction technologies are introduced without compromising on quality. PRIORITY AREA: DRINKING WATER RESERVOIRS FOR ABU DHABI CASE STUDY Challenge: If faced with an emergency, the water reserves of the city of Abu Dhabi would last only three days. Solution: This project, the first of its kind anywhere in the world, provides Abu Dhabi with an underground reservoir of drinking water produced from desalinated seawater. The city s one million inhabitants will now have sufficient drinking water for 90 days. The reservoir is equipped with technologies from various German medium-sized companies and sets new standards for the Gulf region as a whole. Solution: The Chinese Government is to press ahead with administrative reforms as part of its sustainable development strategy, making authorities and public offices more efficient and service-oriented, and in so doing will focus more on citizens needs in order to improve citizen satisfaction and justice. Service module: PRIORITY AREA: VOCATIONAL TRAINING NEW PROFESSIONAL OPPORTUNITIES IN INDIA CASE STUDY Challenge: The dynamic industrialisation of the southern Indian state of Karnataka is jeopardised by a serious shortfall of well-trained specialists. Solution: Two new vocational training centres will in future provide up to 4,000 pupils each year with dual training opportunities in line with the German model in disciplines such as mechatronics and environmental technology. Although tuberculosis need not be fatal, around 1.4 million people died from this infectious disease worldwide in 2010. Many countries either have no access to high-quality drugs or cannot afford them. Solution: Since it was founded by WHO in 2001, the Global Drug Facility (GDF) has been working to increase access to high-quality tuberculosis drugs. Our : GIZ IS is WHO s exclusive partner in procuring tuberculosis drugs. We are responsible for the tendering procedures, contract negotiations, purchasing, provision and supply of drugs. Solution: In 1991 the European Commission began work on a programme that included a fund for remedying environmental damage and the disposal of radioactive waste. Ukraine received particularly extensive support from this programme for the nuclear power plant and exclusion zone around Chernobyl.
