American Nursing Colleges Nurse Shortages: 22,500 in California NOW, and 116,000 Nurses by 2020 Over 1,000,000 Nurses Needed in the US by 2020 ARE YOU PREPARED? Be a Nurse! By Eva Artates MSN, RN, PHN The shortage in nurses is worse in California; this state ranks 50 th out of the 50 states as having the most need of nurses. Due to several factors, the estimated shortage of 22,500 nurses at this time is projected to increase five times in less than 20 years from now. A projected need of 116,000 registered nurses (RN) is expected in California, and over 1,000,000 RNs in the United States by the year 2020. Nursing still remains as one of the most rewarding occupations there is. There are several academic routes toward being a registered nurse. Many aspiring nurses take community college prerequisite courses in hopes that they can graduate with an Associate Degree in Nursing in two years. Unfortunately, the colleges wait list to start the Nursing program can be as long as two to eight years. Needless to say, it is difficult to plan life when one has an unreliable time line. Consider however this career alternative: become a Vocational Nurse in as little as one year and start earning approximately $48,000 annually. The Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) practices under the direction of a physician or a registered nurse (BVNPT). You can work in various healthcare settings such as a hospital, a long term care facility, a clinic, home health, and many other service areas and function in several capacities such as staff developer or supervisor. If you decide to pursue your RN education the advantage to being an LVN is that you no longer have the stress of waiting and wondering what your career will be because you are already working as a nurse! You also benefit from having a job that is paying you to have the practical experience which puts you at a greater advantage over an RN student. Of course the greatest benefit to being a Vocational Nurse is that you have the knowledge not only to help other people, but you are better able to help your family and friends when they are in need. Start your career now!
