1 Information Brochure Associate Degree Nursing Program (RN Program) Visit us on the web: Shepherd University School of Nursing 3200 N. San Fernando Road, Los Angeles, CA90065 The Associate Degree Nursing Program (RN) at Shepherd University (SU) is an Associate Nursing degree program that is accredited by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE) and approved by the Board of California Registered Nursing. Shepherd University is designated as a degree granting University through the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE). Shepherd University has received accreditation from the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) that is recognized by Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and U.S. Department of Education. Shepherd University has also been recognized as a Candidate for Accreditation by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) as of February 2014 and anticipated to schedule a single visit for Initial Accreditation to take place in spring Please note that that degrees earned prior to a regional accreditation may not be recognized at other colleges/universities. 2 APPLYING TO THE PROGRAM In order to be considered for acceptance into the Nursing Program, applicant must submit a COMPLETE APPLICATION PACKET to the RN Office, which includes the following: A. One official U.S. high school transcript or GED certificate or Equivalency Report from one of the high school s acceptable companies; not required if an Associate or higher degree is posted on U.S. college transcripts. B. One official transcript of ALL U. S. colleges and universities attended including Shepherd University UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS AND PHOTOCOPIES OF DIPLOMAS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE. Please note that upon acceptance to the Nursing Program the college s Records Office will also require transcripts. Incomplete applications will not be considered in the selection process. Applications will be available during the following periods: *July 1 September 30 for Spring admissions *January 2 March 31 for Fall admissions Applications can be downloaded from the school website or received from the RN Office. GENERAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE NURSING PROGRAMS (Generic RN, LVN Advanced Placement, and LVN 30-Unit Option Program): Applicants must meet both Shepherd University and the School of Nursing requirements for admission to the Associate Degree Nursing Program (#1-17): V NO LISTS REMARK 1 A Shepherd University Application Form & Application fee $120 For all nursing programs; All prospective students should submit the application form and the fee for further proceeding of RN Program application processing. 2 A copy of LVN School Diploma and For the LVN to RN Program and LVN 30-Unit Option Two official transcripts 3 A copy of High School Diploma and For the Generic RN Program only; all transcripts outside of the U.S. formal transcript must be evaluated by an educational credential evaluator; accepted only sealed transcript for validity. 4 Two Official College (GE) Transcript. 3 (Overall GPA must be 2.0) 5 An Education Reference For the LVN to RN Program and LVN 30-Unit Option (by free style) Two Recommendation Letters 1 from previous college with showing the student s scholastic aptitude, 1from professional related workplace; if applicant has no field experience shall submit 2 recommendations from nursing schools; the verification issued more than three month before the submission date will not be accepted For the Generic RN Program: Two Recommendation Letters (using School form provided.) 6 Completed General Education Requirement (All science course have to be graded 2.0 or above with 4.0 GPA grading scale) For Associate Degree Nursing for the Generic RN Program: 4 credit units of high school level Chemistry, Biology, & Algebra with a grade C or above 4 credit units of high school level algebra II, trigonometry, geometry, or calculus with a grade C or above For the LVN to RN Program: 4 credit units of any college level Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology w/labs with a grade C or above Credits of college level English Composition, Public Speaking, Sociology, and Psychology with a grade C or above For the LVN 30-Unit Option Required Courses 4 credit units of college level Microbiology w/lab and Physiology w/lab with a grade C or above 7 A copy of current LVN license For the LVN to RN Program and LVN 30-Unit Option 8 A copy of Certified Background Check For all nursing programs; goes back 7years with a social security trace, Medicare % or above score of TEAS (Test of For all nursing programs; valid within two years from the issued date. Once students are enrolled, the remainder of the GE courses should be completed at SU only. Generally, more than fifty percent of the semester hours in the ADN program must be completed at SU, and the 36 General Course units must have been completed by time of application submission of the ADN program. Religious Studies (9 units) may be taken concurrently with nursing courses. The nursing curriculum covers First Year and Second Year of Nursing courses. PROGRAM OVERVIEW The program is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN). There are THREE options: Classes are admitted in Fall and Spring semester terms. These applicants have completed the general education at Shepherd University (SU) and/or another college and may request to transfer credits. Maximum transferred units of GE courses are 36 units in the ADN program. The following courses must have been completed by the beginning nursing courses: Anatomy w/lab (4 units)* Physiology w/lab (4 units)*, Biology (3units) or Chemistry (3units)*, Microbiology w/lab (4 units)*, English Rev 06/30/2014 4
5 Composition & Public Speaking (6 units), Psychology (3 units), Sociology (3units), Medical Terminology(3units),Nut rition (3units), and Human Growth & Development (3units). Religious Studies (9 units) may be taken prior or with nursing courses. *Courses must have been completed within five years prior to admission. CURRICULUM PLAN The program is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN). There are THREE options: OPTION 1 GENERIC RN PROGRAM (TWO-YEAR NURSING) This curriculum covers First Year and Second Year of Nursing courses. These applicants have completed the General education at Shepherd University (SU) and/or another college prior to application of this Option. This is offered associate degree in nursing upon completion. Students who pursue ADN Program must fulfill the following subject areas: General Education: 45units Christian Studies: 3 courses (9 Units) Communication: 2 courses (6 Units) Social and Behavioral Sciences: 3 courses (9 Units) Natural and Physical Sciences: 9 courses (21 Units) Major requirements: A minimum of 40 units Unit requirement: A minimum of 85 semester units OPTION 2 - LVN ADVANCED PLACEMENT (ONE-YEAR NURSING) This curriculum covers Second Year of Nursing courses. These applicants have completed the prerequisites at Shep herd University (SU) and/or another college prior to application of this Option. The curriculum includes NR104 Role Transition and NR310 Health Assessment as prerequisites, which should be taking at Shepher d University. This is offered associate degree in nursing upon completion. Students who pursue the LVN to RN must fulfill the following subject areas: General Education: 45units Christian Studies: 3 courses (9 Units) Communication: 2 courses (6 Units) Social and Behavioral Sciences: 3 courses (9 Units) Rev 06/30/2014 5
6 Natural Sciences: 9 courses (21 Units) Pre-requisites at SU: 2 courses (6 Units) Major requirements: A minimum of 17.5 Units Unit requirement: A minimum of 68.5 semester units OPTION 3 LVN 30-UNIT (NON DEGREE RN PROGRAM) These LVN applicants have taken Microbiology with lab and Physiology with lab from SU and/or another college and are requesting transfer credit for these courses. The curriculum includes NR104 Role Transition and NR310 Health Assessment as prerequisites, which should be taking at Shepherd University. No other general studies are required. These courses must have been completed by the time of application submission. In accordance with Board of Registered Nursing Policy (section 1429) California Licensed Vocational Nurses may apply for LVN 30-Unit, non-degree certificate program, that upon successful completion the individual is eligible to take the NCLEX-RN exam. Other states may not recognize the LVN 30- Unit option as an acceptable preparation for licensure. Non-degree applicants will be considered on a space available basis only, following acceptance of qualified applicants to the degree program. Acceptance of LVN 30-Unit option as a candidate is not guaranteed. Once approved, the LVN 30-Unit candidate may not change to any other tracts. Students who pursue the LVN 30-Unit Program must fulfill the following subject areas: General Education: 8units Natural Sciences: Microbiology with lab (4units) and Physiology with lab (4units) Pre-requisite: Role Transition (3 units) Major requirements: A minimum of 17.5 Units Unit requirement: A minimum of 28.5 semester units SAMPLE CURRICULUM OF ASSOCIATE DEGREE IN NURSING REQUIREMENTS (TWO-YEAR NURSING PROGRAM) General Education/Prerequisites Required Course Required Units 1. 8 GRADUATION/LICENSURE REQUIREMENT To receive an Associate of Degree Nursing from Shepherd University the student must meet the following requirements: 1. Complete the Associate of Degree Nursing curriculum. 2. Complete the Shepherd University requirement (Chapel). 3. Complete all nursing course requirements within 150% of the published length of the academic program. 4. Attain a cumulative quality point average of 2.00 on a 4.00 scale in the major. 5. Attain an overall cumulative quality point average of 2.00 on a 4.00 scale. 6. Completion of the Comprehensive Exit exam with a grade of 80% or higher. 7. Complete over 90% of NCLEX-RN Review class attendance. CALIFORNIA BOARD OF REGISTERED NURSING CONTACT INFORMATION: P.O. ACADEMIC/CLINICAL GRADING AND SATISFACTORY PROGRESS Because of the uniqueness of nursing education, the nursing faculty has developed academic standards that are higher and more stringent then the university at large. The student must earn grades of "C" in each of the following nursing courses: NR 101, NR 102, NR 103, NR 201, NR 202, NR 203, NR 301, NR 302, NR 401, NR 402, and NR 403. STUDENTS WITH FOREIGN TRANSCRIPTS: Students with foreign transcripts must have their transcripts evaluated by the members of National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES).
