Rules & Regulations Article 1 Associazione Ecce Gratum Giovani Musicisti Veneti, with Edizioni Sconfinarte and under the patronage of Regione Veneto, Provincia di Treviso, Municipality of Treviso (Italy), Centro Musica Contemporanea, Cidim, Federazione Cemat and SIMC (ISCM Italian section), announces the International Composition Competition for Youth Orchestra Bruno, addressed to original compositions for youth orchestra. The duration must be between 8 and 12. Article 2 The competition is open to composers of any nationality without age limit. Article 3 The competition is divided into three stages: First Step: Selection of the projects (April 15 May 15, 2014): presentation of a project in which the composer explains his/her vision, describes his/her project and how he/she intends to develop it; selection of the project by three out of the five members of the jury panel. Second Step: Workshop and writing of the score (May 15 September 30, 2014): the composer, whose project has been selected, writes a first draft of the score, which will be analysed and rehearsed during the Summer Workshop of the orchestra. At the end of the Workshop, the composer will have to complete the definitive version of the score. Third Step: Award ceremony (November 16, 2014): performance of the score at the award ceremony concert. Composers can participate with one work only, according to the modalities described in articles 4 5 and 6 of this regulation. The winners of the previous editions are not elegible to participate in the competition. FIRST STEP: SELECTION OF THE PROJECTS (April 15 May 15, 2014) Article 4 Applications for the Competition must be sent by e mail according to the procedure indicated in art. 5 and 6 of this regulation no later than April 15, 2014 at 23.59 (EST), to the e mail address: concorsomaderna@eccegratum.it The file dimensions of the application should not exceed 15 MB; files exceeding this size will not be accepted. Article 5 The registration fee, including membership fee, is 20 euros for each of the participants. The payment must be made by bank transfer no later than April 15, 2014, as outlined below. Payments made after this deadline will not be accepted. Article 6 Applications sent to the e mail address concorsomaderna@eccegratum.it must contain the following documentation only in PDF format. Other formats will not be accepted: A) A project for the composition of a score for youth orchestra of the duration between 8 and 12 (Example: name and surname project.pdf). The maximum length for the text is 1500 words. The project must contain the following points, clearly indicated: 1) genesis of the project; 2) development of the project: musical material (rhythm, melody, harmony); form; sound colour; 3) aims of the project: musical and didactic scopes; 4) musical elements: musical fragments of the score that is to be accomplished according to the presented project (max 50 measures) It is possible to attach explanatory drawings or other graphic elements to the text. B) 3 scores with related mp3 audio files, composed during the last 5 years; C) detailed CV (Example: name and surname curriculum vitae.pdf); D) the form attached to the regulation (see fac simile below), filled in all its parts and signed (Example: name and surname documents.pdf); E) a copy of a valid identity paper (example: name and surname identity.pdf); F) a receipt of the bank transfer of the 20 euro registration fee, including membership fee (example: name and surname receipt.pdf); Article 7 Applications which do not contain all the documents listed above or do not comply with the procedures required will be disqualified from the competition. Article 8 During the first step, three of the five members of the jury panel will judge the submitted projects. In detail: M Claudio Ambrosini, composer and President of the Jury panel; Prof.ssa Maria Grazia Seren, flautist and artistic director of Associazione Ecce Gratum; M Francesco Pavan, composer and conductor of the Orchestra Giovani Musicisti Veneti. During the selection, the jury panel may contact the candidates, to ask for further musical material or to request information about the projects. The selection will be closed before May 15, 2014. A maximum of three projects will be selected. The results will be communicated to the selected composers through e mail, and they will be announced on the web site www.eccegratum.it. The decision of the jury is irrevocable and final.

SECOND STEP: WORKSHOP AND WRITING OF THE SCORE (May 15 September 30, 2014) Article 9 The selected composers will have to pay a fee of 50 euro to take part to the workshop of the International Composition Competition for youth orchestra Bruno. The payment must be made by bank transfer no later than May 25, 2014, except for certified binding hindrance, as outlined below. The non fulfillment of the payment on due time will cause the candidate to be disqualified. The participant s name and surname must be indicated. Article 10 The composers whose projects will be selected will have to write a first draft of a score for youth orchestra, with a duration between 8 and 12. The composition, being aimed at students, should not exceed the degree of difficulty indicated in the rules. The difficulty levels are referred to pre academic (P.A.) courses in the italian Conservatory of Music. The composition must be written for the WHOLE following instrumentation: Woodwinds: 2 flutes and 1 piccolo (difficulty level: III class level A); 2 oboes (difficulty level: I class level B); 2 B flat clarinets (difficulty level: II III class level A); 2 alto sax (difficulty level: II III class level A) Brasses: 3 trumpets (difficulty level: I class level B); 1 flugelhorn (difficulty level: I class level B); 2 trombones (difficulty level II III class level A) Percussions: (difficulty level: III class) Tympani (1 performer) Percussions (2 performers) Available instruments: 1 Bass Drum, 2 Symphonic Cymbals, 1 Glockenspiel, 1 Triangle, 1 Snare Drum, 2 Suspended Cymbals (medium and large), Claves, Guiro, Cow Bell, Sleigh Bells, Maracas, Bongos, Ocean Drum, 2 Tom Toms (10 14 ), 1 Basque Drum, 2 Wood Blocks, Hi Hat. 1 Keyboard (max 2 performers) (difficulty level: I class level B). Model: Yamaha keyboard P120 / P120S 1 Harp (difficulty level: I class level B). Strings: Violins I; Violins II (possibly also Violins III); Violas; Cellos; (difficulty level: III class level A) Strings must not be split into music stands or in real parts Being aimed at students, the composition should not exceed the level of difficulty indicated, according to the technical chart attached to these rules. It is possible for the jury to decide together with the selected composers to operate slight variations in the instrumentation, in order to obtain the best musical result in the performance at the award ceremony.

Article 11 The selected composers must provide the first draft of the score and the performance material (single parts) by e mail at concorsomaderna@eccegratum.it, no later than July 31, 2014, at 23.59 (EST), except for certified binding hindrance, The non fulfilment of the deadline will cause the candidate to be disqualified. Article 12 The first draft of the scores will be analysed, discussed and rehearsed by the three composers selected for the workshop with the orchestra conductor, M Francesco Pavan, the artistic director Prof. Maria Grazia Seren and all the teachers of the Orchestra Giovani Musicisti Veneti, during the summer courses Note d estate 2014 that will be held in Santa Maria degli Angeli (Assisi PG), August 17 to 26 2014. The selected composers will have to take part to the workshop from August 20 to August 22 2014 in the venue of the Summer courses, otherwise they will be disqualified; they will have the possibility to rehearse with the orchestra, both in sections and not, for the performance of the score and to finish the piece. Associazione Ecce Gratum Giovani Musicisti Veneti can prolong the composer s stay if needed; this will be agreed with the composers. If the Summer course has to be cancelled for circumstances beyond the association s control, Associazione Ecce Gratum Giovani Musicisti Veneti will timely agree a new rehearsal schedule with the composers. Article 13 After taking part to the Summer Workshop, the selected composers must send the definitive score and its detached parts for the awarding ceremony performance of the International Composition Competition for youth orchestra Bruno, no later than September 30 2014, at 23.59 (EST), at the e mail address concorsomaderna@eccegratum.it except for certified binding hindrance. The nonfulfilment of the deadline will cause the candidate to be disqualified. THIRD STEP: AWARD CEREMONY (November 16, 2014) Article 14 The definitive scores will be performed by Orchestra dei Giovani Musicisti Veneti on Sunday 16 November 2014. The jury panel, composed of the following five members: M Claudio Ambrosini, composer and President of the Jury panel; Prof.ssa Maria Grazia Seren, flautist and artistic director of AssociazioneEcce Gratum; M Francesco Pavan, composer and conductor of the Orchestra Giovani Musicisti Veneti; M Alessandro Kirchner, composer; M Giovanni Mancuso, composer. will award the prizes after the performance as indicated in these regulations. The decision of the jury is irrevocable and final. Ex aequo prizes may be awarded. Associazione Ecce Gratum Giovani Musicisti Veneti can substitute any member of the jury panel in case they cannot take part in the awarding ceremony for certified binding hindrance.

Article 15 The winner of the first prize will be awarded 1,000 euros The winner of the second prize will be awarded 650 euros The winner of the third prize will be awarded 350 euros Besides the prizes awarded by the jury, the audience will award a prize. The work receiving the audience s preference will be awarded a plaque. All awarded prizes will be published by Edizioni Sconfinarte, Rovato (BS Italy) www.edizionisconfinarte.com and might be planned in future concert seasons of the Orchestra Giovani Musicisti Veneti. Article 16 The selected composers will have to attend the Summer workshop and the awarding ceremony, except for certified binding hindrance, and will have to accept the publication of their work by Edizioni Sconfinarte, under penalty of disqualification and override of the prize. Article 17 Associazione Ecce Gratum Giovani Musicisti Veneti will take charge of the following expenses for each of the selected composers: 1 Accommodation and daily food allowance (single room) from August 20 to August 22 2014 at Casa Aristide Leonori in S. Maria Degli Angeli (Assisi PG), for 2 nights (check in on August 20; check out on August 22). Associazione Ecce Gratum Giovani Musicisti Veneti can prolong the composer s stay if needed; this will be agreed with the composers; any further expenses of accommodation and daily food allowance is on charge of Associazione Ecce Gratum Giovani Musicisti Veneti. 2 Accommodation in hotel (1 night, breakfast included) for the night of November 16 2014, for the awarding ceremony 3 Reimbursement of the travel expenses up to 200 euro. Article 18 Winning works or parts of them cannot be publicly performed before the awarding concert without the authorisation of Associazione Ecce Gratum Giovani Musicisti Veneti, under penalty of override of the prize. Article 19 Any television or radio broadcast or recording made during the performances linked to the competition with allowance of the organization are deemed to have been authorized by the composers without incurring any additional obligation for the organizers. Article 20 By entering his/her documents, the participant indicates his/her acceptance of these conditions and the final decisions of the selection committee, even in the case that no work is selected and/or awarded.

Article 21 The projects and the scores by the composers who do not satisfy the above mentioned criteria will not be taken into consideration in the selection for the competition. Article 22 In case of dispute, the rules in Italian language published on the website www.eccegratum.it are legally valid. Legal actions are excluded. Associazione Ecce Gratum Giovani Musicisti Veneti is completely discharged from responsibilities about disputes inherent to the publishing of scores by Edizioni Sconfinarte, and is not responsible for the incomplete or lost communications due to inaccurate indications of the address by the participants, nor for any technical and informatics mistakes ascribable to a third party or accidents or circumstances beyond our control. SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL: TECHNICAL CHART Tempo For asymmetrical rhythms (5/8, 7/8, 9/8 in 4, 8/8 in 3), it is advisable to use the same metrical division for all instruments. Rhythm It is advisable not to make a large use of tuplets larger than a quintuplet; they can be given to the first parts of the orchestra. Extended techniques They can be given to first parts of the orchestra as follows: Flatterzunge Flutes Brass Tremolo Strings Roll Timpani Glissando Flutes Brass Strings Timpani Harp (also pedal glissandos) Slap tongue Flutes Brass Breath sound All the winds Harmonics Flutes: from the second octave, Root note and 2 3 4 Strings: the use of artificial harmonics must be of IV and limited to long sounds. It is possible to perform fast glissandos touching the string (natural harmonics glissando) Harp: harmonics HARP: muted sounds and percussions on the body.
