On Nov. 5, at 10:58 p.m. emergency crews were dispatched to the Woods Furniture Co., 212 E. Hiram St. Over the next six hours, fire fighters from as far away as Vivian, La. battled the blaze. Atlanta Fire Department Assistant Chief Ricky Draper said By Lee Ellen Benjamin as of Dec. 2, they do not have a cause of the fire. We don t know now and we may never know what caused it. Eddie Woods, son of Woods Furniture Co. founder E.B. Woods, said he got a similar report from a fire investigator working for his insurance company. All they could say was that it was undeterminable. The last report I got from them (insurance company) said they were not sure if it started outside the building or in it. Since the fire there has been Hathcock home final stop on home tour rumors and speculation that the fire may have been deliberately set. While they do not know what caused the fire, Draper said the evidence shows it did not start outside the building. What s done is done. You can hear hearsay about this or that, but they (the investigators) are looking for evidence, for proof, Woods said. He noted that his family s focus has shifted from thinking about what caused the fire to moving forward. We re still trying to make it, he said. It s a slow process. Woods said they were waiting for an approval from the insurance company before they could begin the cleanup, which is scheduled to begin shortly. The city has asked us to have it cleaned up by the Christmas parade. The parade is planned for Dec. 13. Woods added that Atlanta Fire Department will be on hand during the cleanup to ensure it is done safely. Destroyed in the fire was the furniture store showroom, offices and an empty building to the west which formerly held the Western Auto. The adjacent Terrell Brothers Furniture & Appliances suffered water and smoke damage; a cinderblock wall between the stores helped prevent the fire from spreading across the block. Woods said that they have not decided if they are going to rebuild, focusing on what has to be done in the present before looking too far into future. We re going at it, he said. The house will be on the 5th Annual Christmas Tour of Homes hosted by CHRISTUS St. Michael-Atlanta Foundation from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7. The house was built in 2005 and loosely based on the design of her mother s home in Monticello, Ark., but the various decorating touches are completely the work of Sherry Hathcock. She can conceive a use for almost any found object. Clever does not begin to describe her ability to create interesting and appealing works of art from non-functioning junk. Her flair shines in every room of the gracious home. Visitors should be sure to note the Santa-scape in the front hall, the lavatory-planter in the master bathroom and the beautifully decorated Christmas trees in every room. The contractors for this three-bedroom, two bath house were Felix Prince and Mike Gay of McLeod. The massive fireplace in the den was built my local mason Pete Mayfield and features a custom-made Satterwhite log mantle. The arch in the front hall was hand hewn by Satterwhite, as well. Also in the den is a glowing Christmas tree decorated in rustic seed pods, plaid ribbon and hundreds of twinkle lights. Describing this captivating home as a 3BR-2BA is deceiving. Not only is there a 3-car garage, but an enormous workshop behind and a pond that is home to 60-70 geese. They have two dogs that guard the property, too It is clear that John Hathcock is an outdoorsman. The band hall discussion was one of three items which brought trustees to the administration building for a noon meeting. Shortly after the meeting began, the board retired to executive session to discuss approval of method on construction of new AHS band hall. State law requires discussion of contracts and personnel be done in closed session, with any action which results from the discussion taking place in open session. After meeting behind closed doors for close to an hour, the board reconvened. Keri Richardson offered a motion that District Superintendent Sidney Harrist be empowered to seek competitive sealed proposals for a new band hall. Joe Wall second the motion, which passed unanimously. Harrist said the district will begin working with an architect to develop plans for the band hall. The district will likely open the bidding period in the March or April with hopes that by late summer they will have finalized the plans. He added that he envisioned the new band hall as a stand-alone building on the high school campus. He also plans to meet with band boosters to solicit their input for the project. In November the Big Bad Band from Rabbitland advanced to the UIL 4A Marching Band competition finals, placing seventh in the state. In other board business, trustees awarded D.K. Haney a contract valued at 126,116 to replace sections of the primary school roof. The areas to be replaced are the school s original roof. The board also accepted the resignation of 7th Grade Math Teacher Jolean Roberson, effective at the end of the fall semester. a family business for 50 years. There are a lot of memories and stories there, he added. In the midst of the tragedy, Woods said that he has been overwhelmed by the community support. The outpouring from the community has been fantastic. Customers, former customers and in- dividuals have come forward with their support. It has been phenomenal. I can t believe it. Residents should take special precautions during the holidays to prevent theft of their vehicles and property. Don t leave belongings or purses visible in your vehicle during the holiday season. Following a pedestrian stop on Nov. 23, officers arrested Charles Edward Jefferson, 37, of Atlanta for an outstanding warrant out of Atlanta for evading arrest and three outstanding traffic warrants out of Atlanta. Jefferson was transported to the Cass County Sherriff s Office. Officers were dispatched to the 700 block of West Main Street in reference to an alarm. Upon arrival it was learned that some glass doors had been broken at that location. On Nov. 26 at 2:32 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 400 block of Mill Street in reference to an unwanted person. Upon arrival and further investigation, officers arrested Amber Lynn Hunter, 18, of Atlanta for criminal trespass. At 4:33 that same day, officers arrested Brenda Kay Sell, 38, of Atlanta after a call came in of an unwanted person at the 400 block of Mill Street for two outstanding traffic warrants. Following a traffic stop on the 600 block of Glenwood Street, officers arrested Nicholas Glenn Griggs, 17, for possession of marijuana. At 6:48 p.m. on Nov. 30, officers were dispatched to the 300 block of Nancy Street in reference to a criminal trespass violation. Upon arrival and further investigation, officers arrested David Benjamin Campbell, 52, of Atlanta for criminal trespass. Campbell was also charged with possession of a controlled substance. He was transported to the Cass County Sheriff s Office. Officers were dispatched to the 1300 block of Courtland Road on Nov. 28 at 11:32 p.m. A window had been broken at that location. The case is still under investigation. On Nov. 29, officers were dispatched to the 200 block of Loop 59 in reference to an intoxicated person. Upon arrival, officers located the suspect laying on the sidewalk. Officers arrested Cynthia Louise Phillips, 43, of Texarkana, Ark. for public intoxication. Also on Nov. 29, Officers received a report of credit card abuse from the 300 block of Baker Street. This case is under investigation. Officers were dispatched to the 200 block of Loop 59 at 9:40 a.m. Nov. 30 in reference to theft. Upon arrival and further investigation, officers arrested Carroll Wayne Treadway, 40, of Atlanta for theft. The door is swathed in glowing with the spirit of Christmas. The home of Mr. and Mrs. John Hathcock is large and comfortable. Visitors will be captivated by the décor in every room. The swing on the back porch is skillfully decorated with greens and ribbon. Even the swing in the back yard is craftily decorated, too. The clever treatment in the front hall of the home of Sherry Hathcock is a sign of her artistry. Visitors will see many of her creative and imaginative works throughout the house. On the front porch of 432 County Road 4132, visitors will see a bench which was originally part of the building on Main St. where the Plaza on Main stands now. It was rough sawed in the 1800s and has been artfully refinished by John Hathcock. oak armoire with a beveled mirror in the center that Hathcock discovered at a sale in Stuttgart, Ark. She explained that it breaks down in to several parts, to accommodate moving the colossal piece. In the spare bedroom Hathcock has again exhibited her flair for decorating. There is an attractive telephone table that she refinished. In addition, she antiqued the woodwork to match, which sets the guest bedroom apart from the rest of the house. All of the doors in the house are reclaimed from a Victorian home in Texarkana. None of the doors are the same size, so the builder had to adapt each frame to fit. Visitors should be sure to look at the exquisite stamped brass hinges on each door, too. There is so much to see in this beautiful home, it is difficult to describe the immense appeal. The Hathcocks are a charming couple who live in a superb home on a wooded lane. This house is a must see and all guests will be delighted with the many distinctive touches and ingenious embellishments. Other homes on the tour: Mr. and Mrs. Steven Smith, 107 N. Allen, 89, of Bloomburg, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2014, at his residence surrounded by family. He was born Jan. 25, 1925, in Ravanna, Ark., to Aubrey Sr. and Edna Bell Allen. He was retired from Alford Refrigerated Warehouses and served in the U. S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church and the Masonic Lodge # 1007 in Bloomburg. He loved horses and walking. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Lane Allen; a daughter, Renee Kemp; and his parents. MERLE OPAL McCAIN March 1, 1913 - Dec. 3, 2014 Merle Opal McCain, 101, of Atlanta, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2014, in a local adult care facility. She was born March 1, 1913, in Minter, to Robert and Nannie Belle Wharton. She moved to Atlanta with her husband in February 1940. She was a loving mother, homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of Atlanta. She taught Sunday school was a children s worker and Girl Scout leader. She enjoyed sewing, all kinds of needle work, reading western books, and cooking. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dillard Ivey McCain; sister, Ola Bowman and her parents. QC was only up by five points after one quarter with the score being 19-14 but by halftime the Bulldogs were up by 15 at 3621. The lead got up to 21 by the end of the third frame and when the final buzzer sounded QC won by 31 points. The Bulldogs forced 31 turnovers to help fuel their offense. Dakota Carver led the scoring with 18 points, followed by Jimmy Larry with 11 and teammate Scott Romanick chipped in with eight points of his own. Ten different Bulldog players scored in the contest and with the win the Dawgs are 3-1 on the season. The team began play in the Prairiland Tournament on Dec. 4, and will continue through the weekend. Lady Cats win Bloomburg defeated CHAAMPS (Christian Homeschool Athletic Association of Mt Pleasant) 58-9 on Nov. 25. The Lady Wildcats rolled out to a 13-2 first quarter lead and held a 23-5 lead at the half. Bloomburg outscored CHAAMPS 35-4 in the second half to take a 49 point victory. Hailey Cressionnie scored a team-high 28 points, Kinsey Kelly banked in 10, Kaydee Kelly recorded eight points and both Hope Parker and Trinity Mouser scored four apiece. McLeod places third McLeod s Lady Longhorns placed third in the Queen City Basketball Tournament which took place Nov. 20-23. The Lady Horns defeated Maud 49-31 in one game. McLeod went up 13-6 after one quarter of play and took a 29-17 lead into halftime. The Lady Longhorns outscored Maud 20-14 in the second half to seal the 18-point victory. Jessica Keener tossed in 17 points, Kyndal Shepard had 12, Selena Moon added 10 and Erin Weaver posted six. After a 38-25 loss to Elysian Fields and a close 45-40 loss to Avinger, the Lady Longhorns put on a clinic against Hooks and host Queen City. McLeod dominated Hooks to the point of a 46-25 win behind a teamhigh 11 points from Selena Moon. Jessica Keener scored nine points, Anna Parker eight, Shepard six and Emma Parker five. The Lady Longhorns defeated host Queen City 3219 to take home the third place trophy. Both Keener and Shepard put up 12 points apiece in the contest against the Lady Bulldogs. Horns split with Avinger Indians On Nov. 25, the McLeod varsity basketball programs traveled to Avinger to take on the Indians. The girls avenged a 5-point loss to Avinger in the Queen City tourney with a solid 64-50 win. Kyndal Shepard ripped the nets for 17 points with two treys and Jessica Keener added 10. Selena Moon recorded 11 points, Emma Parker tossed in 11 and Courtney Hanson added six. The boys fell to the Indians 73-51 although J.R. Smith scored 13 points, Dave Cherry nine, Bradley Lambeth eight and Josh Gilmore six. McLeod swats Hooks Hornets 50-29 McLeod defeated Hooks for a second time this season with a 50-29 win at home on Dec. 2. The halftime lead was 12 for the Lady Longhorns but by the end of the third frame McLeod had a solid 45-20 lead going into the final quarter. Kyndal Shepard put in 16 points, Jessica Keener added 15, Shelby Davis had eight and Emma Parker posted five. Lady Longhorns open tourney with 53-19 win McLeod opened the James Bowie Tournament with a convincing 53-19 shellacking of Union Hill on Dec. 4. The Lady Longhorns jumped out to a 19-2 first quarter lead and had a 34-11 advantage by the break. In the third the Lady Horns increased their lead by 30 with a 4515 lead. Mandatory Language for a Maximum Contaminant Level Violation The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has notified the EASTER CASS WSC water system that the drinking water being supplied to customers has exceeded the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for total trihalomethanes. The U. S. Environmental Protection agency (U.S. EPA) has established the MCL for total trihalomethanes at 0.080 milligrams per liter (mg/l) based on locational running annual average (LRAA), and has deter mined that it is a health concern at levels above the MCL. Analysis of drink ing water in your commu nity for total tri halomethanes indicates a compliance value in quarter two 2014 of 0.089 mg/l for DBP2 02; and in quarter three 2014 of 0.093 mg/l for DBP2 01 and 0.133 mg/l for DBP2 02. Trihalomethanes are a group of volatile organic compounds that are formed when chlorine, added to the water during the treatment process for legal disinfection, reacts with naturally occurring organic matter in the water. Some people who drink water containing tri halomethanes in excess of the MCL over many years may experience problems with their liver, kidney, or central nervous systems, and may have an in creased risk of getting cancer. You do not need to use an alternative water supply. However, if you have health concerns, you may want to talk to your doctor to get more information about how this may affect you.
