IP Talk SOHO Definition IP Talk SOHO is the delivery of CIMCO s IP Talk Hosted services to locations that do not use CIMCO provided IP Talk access T1 s or CIMCO MPLS. This service enables customers that have smaller sites or alternate connections to take advantage of the telephony features of the IP Talk Hosted platform and the enterprise features and functionality the same as customers that have CIMCO provided access. For customers that provide their own bandwidth, bypassing CIMCO s infrastructure, CIMCO does not guarantee or control Quality of Service (QoS). CIMCO s IP Talk Access T1 s were created for this very reason to enhance troubleshooting practices and QoS controls. If customer elects not to use CIMCO provided facilities, CIMCO cannot guarantee phones will have the proper connection back to the feature server thus impacting performance, function and call quality. The terms of this waiver also include remote sites with any quantity of phones or users taking phones home and connecting to any third party connectivity. 10.6.09 3
Testing Your Network The following is a testing tool CIMCO provides to identify potential bottlenecks that may occur running VOIP over Internet based connections. This test should be run at every location prior to implementing services to identify potential issues with VOIP deployment with third party connectivity. Results of this test are indicators of possible issues and bandwidth but cannot guarantee quality of service. Go to http://st1.cimcoisp.net/ and run the Connection Test Provided by CIMCO. Click where it says Click to start test. The program will run through each of the tabs on the left, and may take up to five minutes to run. When it completes, you will see the below screen. Click on Click here for Detailed Analysis. 10.6.09 4
The Detailed Analysis (see below) should be all Green except for possibly MOS, which is often Red but should have a score of at least 3.8 or higher. If these parameters are not met your connection and call quality may not produce toll quality voice, and your company voice network administrator should be notified of this potential problem. Setting Up Your Phone The telephone must be attached to your Network in order to access the Internet to receive Telephone Service. Follow the in box instructions for setting up your telephone. Attach the cables before snapping on the stand. Though there are several models of phones and yours might not be identical to the picture below, the ports and their markings are the same on virtually all Polycom IP phones. Attach the power cable to the 24v DC port on the phone, and plug it into a standard 100v electric outlet. Use standard Cat5 or Cat5E network cables to attach the network to the telephone LAN port on the bottom of the phone. Then snap on the telephone stand by inserting the stand tab in the center indentation and pressing on the side tabs until it snaps together. It can be removed by grasping the stand in the middle and firmly pulling it off. 10.6.09 6
The telephone can be attached one of two ways: o If there is an open switch port on your router or switch, take the free end of the Cat5 cable that is plugged in to telephone port labeled LAN and plug it directly into the open switch/router port also marked LAN. o If there is not an open switch/router port, the telephone can share the port used by your computer. Find the cable attaching the switch/router to the computer Ethernet port, up plug that cable* from the computer, and attach it to the telephone LAN port. Then attach a second cable from the telephone port marked PC to the computer Ethernet port. Both devices will work off a single router/switch port using this setup. * Must be a standard Cat5 cable though the telephone may have a USB port for configuration downloads, that port will not work as a LAN port using a USB connector Note: If you have VoIP service in your home from your broadband provider, it probably uses different equipment and signaling. Do not plug your CIMCO serviced IP Phone into the special ports where your home VoIP service connects. The CIMCO serviced phone must attach to a switch/router LAN port that is the same as where you would connect your computer. 10.6.09 7
Configuring the Telephone This may have already been done by your Network Administrator or Phone Supplier. If not, you may need to enter the configuration of the telephone. Instructions are included in the Appendix at the end of this document. Setting 911 Emergency Service Location You are responsible for correctly setting the Emergency Services (911) address and location of this telephone so Emergency Personnel are dispatched to the correct location in the event of a 911 call. Click Get Phone Number Info to return to the screen where you can verify or change the 911 information. Click Edit Address and enter the information where the phone is physically located. Testing the Telephone for Basic Functions Complete a call from your IP Telephone to your cell or house phone to verify the ability to make outbound calls. Complete a call from your cell or house phone to your IP Telephone to verify the ability to receive inbound calls. Complete an extension call to a co worker active on CIMCO IP Talk Service. As long as both phones are within the same company and active on IP Talk, you should be able to dial the 3 or 4 digit extension just as you would in the office. Talk to the person and ask them how the audio quality is. Review your phones directory to see that other co workers names and numbers are visible. Go to a website with your phone connected and make sure your internet connection is still working. Make a Long Distance call to verify long distance working correctly Verify Voicemail working correctly (if subscribing) including the Message Waiting Indicator Light. Verify other features as desired. Basic Troubleshooting If the phone LCD screen is blank, make sure the phone has a working power source. The phone will not work without power. Verify the phone has a standard CAT5 Ethernet cable connecting a router/switch port LAN port to the telephone port marked LAN on the back of the phone. If the phone LCD screen has a screen showing anything other than the normal screen with date, time, and extension number, reboot the phone by removing and re attaching the power cord. If the phone appears normal but you cannot make incoming or outgoing calls, verify you have Internet Connectivity by trying to access a website through your computer. The phone must have Internet connectivity to work. If you are able to make calls but you experience static, clipping or dropped calls, run the CIMCO Connection Test to see if your broadband connection is experiencing problems. These problems are typically, but not always, indicative of a problem with the LAN or broadband connection. Engage your company Network Administrator for any other issue. Provide as much detail as possible, including the time of the issue, the other phone number involved, and a detailed description of the problem. 10.6.09 9
