1 For the Way You Live & Work Quick & Easy Set-Up of Packet8 Internet Phone Service Welcome to Packet8 Internet Phone Service. Soon, you ll be able to make all your calls over the Internet and save a bundle on monthly phone charges. It ll take you just a few minutes to set up your phone with the Packet8 adapter box. You are going to connect the Packet8 box to both your DSL/cable modem (the box that gives you access to the Internet) and your regular telephone. Just follow the quick and easy set-up instructions below. (DSL subscribers should skip to page 5 for specific instructions.) What We Provide (package contents): Packet8 Features Guide Quick & Easy Set-up Guide Quick & Easy Set-up Guide and Packet8 Features Guide Ethernet Cable Telephone Wire Power Cord What You Need to Have: Standard Telephone Internet (DSL/Cable) Access to Assuming you have a computer already connected to the Internet, your setup should look something like this: Internet DSL or Cable Modem PC DSL Users: Please see the DSL Users section on page 5 before proceeding. 1

2 Follow these steps below and you ll have your Packet8 Internet Phone Service up and running in no time. 1 Take the existing cable connecting the modem to your computer and unplug it from the computer. Plug that end into the jack labeled WAN on the Packet 8 box. Computer DSL/Cable Modem If you are using your own router, you will require a slightly different set-up (see step 1A below). Think of a router as a telephone splitter for the Internet it shares the Internet signal so you can plug in more than one device, like several computers and your Packet8 box. 1A If you are already using a router, plug one end of the blue Ethernet cable into the WAN jack on the Packet8 box and the other end into your existing router (which is plugged into your modem). 3 2 Connect your regular home telephone to the Packet8 box using the enclosed telephone wire. Plug one end of the wire into the jack on the back of the box labeled LINE and the other end into your regular phone. Caution: Do NOT plug this wire directly into a wall jack. Standard Telephone Telephone wire 3 If you wish to connect a computer to the Packet8 box, you can use a cable to plug it into the jack labeled LAN in the back of the adapter box. If you don t want to connect a computer, skip to the next step. Computer Existing Ethernet cable NOTE: 4 If you are connecting your Packet8 device directly to your cable modem, unplug power to cable modem, plug it back in and wait 30 seconds, then proceed to step 4. Plug one end of the enclosed power cable into a wall socket and the other end into the jack on the Packet8 box that says Power. Power cord 3

4 5 Now, all the lights on the front of the Packet8 box will flash for a few moments and then, the Power, Service and WAN lights will remain on steadily. Your complete set-up should now look like this: Internet 6 DSL or Cable Modem NOTE: DSL broadband connections often use a format called PPPoE, which requires some special configuration. See the instructions on page 5 to set up your Packet8 with PPPoE. Now, you are ready to set up your Packet8 service! (If you purchased your Packet8 device from a retailer, please see 6A below.) You will need the 10-digit activation code sent in the confirmation after you placed your Packet8 service order. You can also get the activation code online by logging into your account at: Simply dial any valid phone number [1-(xxx) xxx-xxxx] or ** and it will be answered by the Packet8 automated voice. Follow the instructions for entering the 10-digit activation code and hang up. 6A If you purchased your Packet8 device from a retailer, go to the Packet8 activation website at and enter the MAC address (a 12-character code) found at the bottom of the device. Then, select a calling plan and options and complete the contact information on the online forms. You will soon receive an with an activation code. Go back to 6 and follow the instructions. 4

5 7 After your Packet8 service is set up, you will receive an confirmation that will contain your Packet8 telephone number. In a matter of moments, you will get a dial tone, so you can begin making phone calls and start saving money! DSL Users: Figure: 1 Contact your DSL provider customer support and ask if their service uses DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) or PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocal Over Ethernet). If the answer is DHCP, you can return to step 1 of the Quick and Easy Guide and follow it through. If the answer is PPPoE, you will need to get a Figure: 2 username and password from your DSL provider and follow the instructions below: 1) Connect a computer directly to the LAN port of your Packet8 box using the blue cable as outlined in 3. 2) Turn on the computer, open up a web browser and type in the address bar of the web browser: Then press the ENTER key. [see Figure #1] 3) Enter the password admin without the quotes. 4) You should now see a System Information Screen that looks like this: [see Figure #2] 5) In the menu bar down the left side of screen, select WAN. 6) In the menu bar on the top of the screen, select PPPoE. This opens the WAN PPPoE Configuration screen that looks like this: [see Figure #3] 7) Under ENABLE PPPoE, click the drop-down arrow and select YES. 8) Under AUTHENTICATION, enter the USERNAME and PASSWORD that were provided by your Internet Service Provider. Username and password are often case-sensitive, so be sure to enter upper and lower case letters correctly. 9) Under Settings, enter the SERVICE NAME and AC NAME required by your ISP. If you are not sure, leave this blank. 10) Click SAVE PPPoE SETTINGS. (For detailed installation with PPPoE, please refer to the Technical User s Guide.) GLOSSARY: Internet Phone Service phone service that uses a broadband connection to the Internet as the network backbone instead of the traditional phone network. LAN - Local Area Network WAN Wide Area Network DSL Digital Subscriber Line Modem the box your Internet service provider gives you that connects to the Internet Router a box that allows you to connect several devices (computer or Packet8 device) to the Internet 5

6 TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS FOR PACKET8 If you have no dial tone on your telephone, first do this: Your Packet8 device (phone adapter) should have a POWER light and a WAN light 10 seconds after startup. If no lights are on, check to see that all the cables are snugly in place and that the power is on at the electrical outlet. If you have a router, check the connections between your router and the Packet8 device. If you have lights on your Packet8 device, but still have no dial tone, follow the procedure below exactly: A. Unplug power to these devices: i) Internet (cable or DSL) Modem ii) Router (if used) iii) Packet8 adapter box B. Wait 30 seconds i) Confirm that all the network cables are firmly snapped into the jacks on all the devices. C. Then, one device at a time, plug power back in snugly, in the following order: i) Internet (cable or DSL) Modem (1) Wait for the lights to come back on for power and external network connection before continuing. (Wait at least 30 seconds) (2) Connecting back up to the Internet Service Provider might take a minute or two ii) Router (1) Wait for the light to come back on for power, status and all LAN lights except for the one going to the Packet8 box before going further. This should take a minute or two, probably less. (Wait at least 30 seconds) iii) Packet8 box light power-up sequence: (1) Power light (2) WAN light (3) Service light D. Should have dial tone at this point and be able to activate NOTE: Use the above procedures if you ever lose dial tone. If you still have no dial tone and using a home router: A. Try to disable SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection) on your router. (This option is usually under firewall settings of your home router. Please contact your router manufacturer for information on how to disable this option). B. Try to put your Packet8 device on DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) of your home router/firewall. (In order to obtain the IP address of your Packet8 device to configure DMZ on your home router, please dial ** The DMZ option is usually under firewall settings of your home router. Please contact your router manufacturer for information on how to configure this option). If you are experiencing poor audio quality (packet loss, dropouts, one way audio, echo, latency) when placing or receiving Packet8 calls, consider the following: A. Stop running any internet file/music sharing program, such as KaZaa, or any video streaming program on your computer. These types of programs usually use a significant portion (or sometimes all) of your Internet connection s available bandwidth and create a lot of latency and interference on your connection. They can cause all kinds of quality issues. To check if this is the case, unplug everything but the Packet8 device from your router and make a couple of test calls to see if the quality issues still exist. If the quality issues go away, add the computer devices/software programs back one at a time until you find which one is causing your quality issues. B. Upgrading your home router s firmware to the latest version available from the router manufacturer. Problems regarding dropped calls and one way audio issues are usually due to a bug in the home router firmware, and upgrading the firmware of the router and/or rebooting the router sometimes fixes the issue. In addition, you can try to put your Packet8 device on DMZ of your home router/firewall. (In order to obtain the IP address of your Packet8 device to configure DMZ on your home router, please dial ** The DMZ option is usually under firewall settings of your home router. Please contact your router manufacturer for information on how to configure this option). C. Replacing the telephone you are using with the Packet8 adapter. Sometimes bad handsets can cause the voice to sound like a bad cellular connection. If your incoming calls do not ring, consider the following: Be sure that you have activated your Packet8 account. To get the activation code, check for a confirmation from Packet8 or log into your account details page at 6
