In designing BoardConnect, we focused on keeping the number and weight of components to a minimum, while ensuring maximum robustness and reliability. And we made sure they are easily accessible and replaceable in case of malfunctions. The Maintenance Panel interface enables quick access to the component status control functions for easy and efficient trouble-shooting. BoardConnect also speeds up and simplifies updating IFE content: just upload the new content via the data loader or wireless updates. The process is as easy as turning a key and can be completed during the shortest turnaround. Protecting content: Digital Rights Management BoardConnect utilizes Microsoft PlayReady content access technology for protecting digital content from unauthorized usage and copying. Microsoft PlayReady protects content by encrypting data files. Access to these files is possible for notebooks that are PlayReady enabled or smartphones and tablets with the required app installed. If a client detects PlayReady protected content, it sends a license request to the License Service (running on the BoardConnect server). With support for advanced data integration, multi-threading, video using IIS Smooth Streaming, and built-in content protection, this enables online and offline applications for a broad range of business and consumer scenarios a perfect pairing with BoardConnect. PlayReady enablement and the provision of the app is a step which can be easily integrated into your digital contact with the customer, for example at the reservation or check-in phase. This will ensure that the client devices are ready to go when the passenger enters your BoardConnect environment. > Minimum weight: proven components The BoardConnect high performance hardware devices are versatile and designed to run applications in the demanding aerospace environment. The wireless system s limited weight and footprint translates into fuel savings, and using solid state air-cooled components increases hardware reliability. > BoardConnect Server The head end component of the BoardConnect IFE system, the server, includes a multiport gigabit ethernet switch and two removable solid state drives for content. It also features aircraft level discrete inputs and outputs (Arinc 429) to facilitate event notification and equipment status to and from other aircraft systems, including remote control ON/OFF. The server is a completely sealed unit that requires no active cooling system and comes with built-in diagnostics reporting. An integrated 3G modem facilitates reporting, status and content updates when the aircraft is on the ground. > BoardConnect Access Point A network distribution device designed specifically for rugged airborne applications, the BoardConnect Access Point supports IEEE 802.11 a/g/n wireless standards based on a commercial off-the-shelf wireless access point. It is configured for the specified radio frequency spectrum for facilitating dual-band wireless communications with other aircraft cabin devices on the network. 8

It is also possible to use an ipad, iphone or ipod with ios 4 or higher by utilizing an App which can be downloaded via the App or itunes Store. Android tablets (starting with OS version 3) and smartphones (starting with OS version 4) are supported as well. The necessary App can either be found in the Google Play store or can be provided by the airline via a customized website. > Easily adaptable: a scalable and flexible solution to suit your carrier profile Lean but powerful BoardConnect is a lean system: the on-board server which can be integrated in the maintenance compartment is simply wired to the access points. The actual number of these depends on the size of the cabin. For a Boeing 767 with 254 seats, for example, we only use five access points, which is sufficient to stream high quality content to all passengers on board. An average short to medium haul aircraft such as an Airbus 320 with 180 seats requires four access points. For the configuration, BoardConnect gives you the choice: stream content to in-seat screens acquire your own portable devices for distribution to particular cabin sections let passengers use their own PEDs Variable configurations The system s modular approach enables you to up-grade gradually, for instance by first offering PED integration and then adding in-seat devices at a later stage. Many variations on these configurations are possible so you can exploit your market to the greatest extent. BoardConnect brings a new degree of flexibility to the world of IFE and broadens the range of aircraft which can be profitably equipped with the system: it now stretches from the commuter level through short and medium haul up to the classic long haul wide bodies. In this way, BoardConnect opens new market segments for carriers who want to complete the passenger experience across the whole product and fleet. Easy retrofitting BoardConnect is also suited for the retrofitting of aircraft already in use. Technically, the implementation is just a line item to the next scheduled service.
