The Monday Message 10.26.09 DODGING FOR A GOOD CAUSE A group of Louisburg College students participated in the 5th annual Chick-fil-A Charity Dodgeball tournament in Richmond, VA this past Saturday. There were over 125 teams participating and we finished in 5th place. Participating students included Deche Perry, Preston Tate, Brian Newsome, Dominique Barnes, Terrell Huntley, Donnavan Gause, and Tantalis Newby. This was a new Guinness World Record for the largest Dodgeball tournament to take place. Our students will also be part of a news segment that will be airing on Richmond.com by midweek. All of the money brought into this tournament was donated to Partnership for the Future and to Schools for Niger. FIGHTING BREAST CANCER, ONE DONATION AT A TIME On Lee National Denim Day, October 30th, Team Louisburg College has pledged to wear jeans and donate at least $5 each to Lee National Denim Day. LOCAL METHODIST CHURCH SHOWS SUPPORT FOR LOUISBURG COLLEGE On Sunday, October 11th, LC President Dr. Mark La Branche preached the 8:30 am, 9:45 am, and 11:05 am services at First United Methodist Church-Cary, where Louisburg College trustee, The Reverend Dr. Rodney Hamm, serves as senior pastor. The Church made three presentations to Louisburg College that morning. The United Methodist Men presented Louisburg College the Marlette Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to be awarded to a Louisburg Student with financial need. The Church lay leader, Eleanor Sun, presented a check to the College for $4,500 for our window renovation project. These funds were given from proceeds raised Mike Bailey, president of the United Methodist Men (FUMC- by the FUMC-Cary Fair Booth. If you go to the Cary), presents a check to LC President Mark La Branche. State Fair, stop by and purchase one of their famous ham biscuits. Finally, the Young Men s Sunday School Class presented Dr. La Branche gifts totaling $600 for the window renovation project. Special thanks go to Vance Miller who has been a champion of the Windows Project for Louisburg College. LC WELCOMES NEW EPA AND OSHA COORDINATOR LC WELCOMES NEW EPA AND OSHA COORDINATOR Louisburg College would like to welcome Terrie Blumenauer, our new EPA and OSHA coordinator. Terrie received her bachelor of science in biology from Stetson University in Florida. She will be our lead person working to prepare for the College s EPA peer audit this fall and will continue to develop our Environmental Management System to ensure compliance as we move forward. The College is very fortunate to have such a resourceful and dedicated employee. Terrie moved from Florida to Henderson to be closer to her daughter and granddaughter. Her office is located in Davis 202. Please welcome her as you see her moving about campus performing her duties. The Chaplain s Corner Stephen Hunt will speak during Chapel this Tuesday October 27th at 11:00 a.m. Shekanah Solomon will perform a liturgical dance (mime). All are invited. THIS WEEK IN SPORTS... SOCCER The women s soccer team defeated Cape Fear Community College Wednesday with a margin of 2-0. They went on to defeat USC-Salkehatchie on Saturday 2-1, to clinch the Region X Regular Season Conference title. The men s soccer team defeated Wake Tech Community College Wednesday by 6-1. They defeated USC- Salkehatchie on Saturday by 3-0, becoming the Region X Regular Season Conference champs. The soccer teams will be hosting the NJCAA Region X Tournament Saturday, October 31st and Sunday, November 1st. Please check the website for tournament information including game times and results. www.louisburg.edu/athletics HIGHLIGHTS The LC Men s Soccer team was ranked 11th in the nation by the NJCAA Oct. 21st poll. The LC Men s Basketball team is ranked 23rd in the nation by the NJCAA pre-season poll. FOOTBALL The football team traveled to Georgia Military College last weekend where they were faced with tough competition. The Hurricanes were defeated 3-55. DON T FORGET! DON T FORGET! Homecoming is this Saturday, October 31st at 12:00 pm against Nassau Community College. Please come out and support the team! VOLLEYBALL The Volleyball team had an impressive week, winning both games. The spike team hosted Central Carolina Community College on Wednesday, defeating them 3-1. They traveled to Henderson Friday to compete against newcomers Vance Granville Community College and beat them by a margin of 3-0. GOLF The Louisburg College junior varsity golf team defeated Danville Community College and Central Carolina Community College at The River Golf & Country Club near Bunn, NC on Monday, October 19th. Travis Byrd was the medalist, with Brandon Smith taking second, Eddie Huckabee taking third, and Tim Combs earning fourth place. Louisburg College won the tournament by 32 strokes and 84 strokes over Danville and Central Carolina, respectively. The golf team will compete next on Tuesday, October 27th, at Pine Hollow Country Club in Clayton, NC. The end-of-fall season Fall Championship will take place on November 9-10 at Little River Golf Resort in Carthage, NC.
