This summer you will read Le Petit Prince in French, in its entirety. You will analyze, in French, what you have read. You will listen to French and learn new vocabulary. You will also note sentence structures as you read. You will be working on reading, writing, and listening skills. When you return to school in August you will be expected to discuss the book in French with appropriate vocabulary. You will be asked to write about the novel and complete a project. Checked out materials that must be returned to HFA in the fall: 1. Le Petit Prince Contents of this packet: 1. Vocabulary List (Quizzes over this vocabulary will start the week of 8/10.) 2. Listening checklist You will receive a grade for this assignment. It is due on August 7, 2015. I will check for the following things: 1. 1 index card per chapter with the following information: a. Characters b. 3-4 sentence summary in French c. Any notes about themes, symbols, etc that you would like to remember (These will come in handy!) 2. Listening checklist 3. Personal vocabulary list (Spiral notebook containing the words that you looked up while reading Le Petit Prince. You will add to this list all year. You don t have to look up every word you don t know while reading, just the ones that affect your comprehension.)
Suggested Schedule: June- Study the vocabulary list- make flashcards* if you need to. (You will use the words ALL year in ALL your essays!) Highlight the words you don t need to study and then spend time studying the others. Give yourself practice tests. Read the first half of Le Petit Prince and complete index cards.** Listen to some broadcasts from tv5.org. July- Finish Le Petit Prince. Finish index cards. Listen to some broadcasts from tv5.org. August 1 until school starts: Review vocabulary and prepare for quizzes when school starts. You should review your index cards from Le Petit Prince. Finish the broadcasts from tv5.org. * Directions for making a quizlet (digital flashcards) are on the website under Extra Info. You need a quizlet account for AP French so if you want to go ahead and make one for this vocabulary, go for it! If you already have a quizlet, you can keep your account and add to it. **There is French software where Le Petit Prince is read aloud in French and animated. Several people have created videos from this software and uploaded them to YouTube. You can search by chapter (ex- Le Petit Prince chapitre 4) and watch them individually, or search Le Petit Prince: L intégrale for the entire book. If you have permission to use YouTube, it is a great resource for listening and comprehension. Materials you will need in the fall: Required Materials A French dictionary o You probably already have one, but you might want to make sure you have one that is larger than a notebook size dictionary. Supplemental Grammar Workbook: You will purchase this book on your own; it can be found online or in a bookstore. o Practice Makes Perfect: Complete French Grammar (ISBN: 007178781X & $12 on amazon.com) 2+ Binder to keep ALL materials throughout the year 5 Dividers Red pens & highlighters Spiral notebook for personal vocabulary list (Part of summer work.) (ISBN: 1438072597) This book will come in handy during the 2 nd semester. Ms. Smithfield has some copies in the library if you need to check one out rather than buy your own. If you buy your own, you can write and highlight to prepare for the AP exam. Bonne chance! (Good luck!) Please contact me with any questions at the email listed above. Please understand that emails sent during the summer will be answered as soon as possible. See you in August!
Listening Requirements Ideally, I would like for you to watch one news broadcast from www.tv5.org per week this summer. I understand that summer plans prevent this for some people. Therefore, I am asking that you watch a certain number and you will write the date. Try your best to space these out throughout the summer. Waiting until August 6 th to do this will be detrimental to your success in AP French! Directions: 1. Go to www.tv5.org 2. Go to the Information page and watch Le flash info. The video will load and it should only be about 5 minutes max. 3. Watch it as many times as you need to understand the broadcast. 4. Fill out your chart. 5. You are required to watch 10 different broadcasts. The more you watch, the more you will help yourself succeed in AP French and on the AP French exam- just ask a former AP student! Date Topics covered (A short list will suffice.) Initials Parent Verification Date
