MPA CONGRESS & ASIA PACIFIC VACCINOLOGY UPDATE Paediatric Infections and Vaccinology Dates: 16 th - 19 th September 2015 Venue: Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur MALAYSIA ANNOUNCEMENT
Message from the MPA President Dear friends and colleagues, On behalf of the Malaysian Paediatric Association (MPA) Executive Committee, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 37 th MPA Annual Congress 2015 to be held from 16 th - 19 th September 2015 at the Shangri La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. We have chosen the capital city this time as we have had last 4 annual events outside the capital. We miss the bustling, fast changing landscape and life of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The theme for the 2015 Annual Congress will be Paediatric Infections and Vaccinology. Paediatric infections remain a major part of our daily paediatric practice in Malaysia. The old remains a challenge to treat, while the new constantly puzzles the paediatrician to diagnose and manage. There will be an array of very interesting scientific programmes lined up for everyone as we all deal with infections every day. We are also grateful to the President of Asia Pacific Paediatric Association (APPA), Datuk Dr Zulkifli Ismail, for organising the Asia Pacific Vaccinology Update in conjunction with our congress focusing on diarrhoea and pneumonia. This update will be held in colloboration with ROTA Council and Asian Strategic Alliance for Pneumococcal disease Prevention (ASAP). Our annual MPA event is not only about updating the latest and exchanging views in Paediatrics but to also catch up with friends and colleagues. The capital city remains an interesting place to visit, discover, shop and play as the landscape is constantly changing. So mark the dates on your busy calendar, and come enrich your knowledge and at the same time enjoy your time with friends and the fast pace of life in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Kok Chin Leong President Malaysian Paediatric Association (MPA) 2013-2015
Message from the APPA President Dear friends and colleagues, It was on 8 th - 9 th December 2004 that APSSEAR (Association of Pediatric Societies of South East Asian Region, as APPA was called then) organised Vaccinology 2004 with the theme of Focus on Hib in Asia. The result was a snowball effect of introduction of Hib vaccine in most of the region over the next few years. Just over a decade later, it is time to revisit this with the AsiaPacific Vaccinology 2015 with the theme of Focus on Pneumonia and Diarrhoea, the two commonest causes of under five mortality at the present time. With these two diseases causing the highest deaths among our children in the region, it is appropriate that we discuss the prevention of these through vaccination. I hope that we can share the hopes, promises and challenges that face the children, parents, healthcare workers and vaccine advocates in trying to reduce the disease burden through vaccination. Successes can be shared, controversies discussed, and we can learn from failures too. With the availability of the pneumococcal conjugate, rotavirus, measles, influenza and Hib vaccines, it in conceivable that we can reduce these mortality numbers with the use of vaccines in addition to clean water supply, proper sanitation and overall increase in general hygiene and improved socioeconomic status of the people. We invite you to Kuala Lumpur in September to be a part of this gathering of experts and colleagues. Warm regards from Malaysia and see you in September... Sincerely, Zulkifli Ismail President Asia Pacific Pediatric Association (APPA)
