2 Seminar Sessions: Considerable outside preparation will be required for the seminar sessions. Students must (no exceptions) furnish Dr. Schell with a copy of their critiques of the three most important points made by the author (s) of the paper (s) immediately after the seminar sessions are concluded. GRADE ALSO DEPENDS ON YOUR PARTICIPATION IN THE DISCUSSIONS Consultation Sessions: These sessions are for individual students. A student may wish to discuss lecture material, examinations or any other issues or concerns that are important to you, even if they do not pertain to the class. Students are extremely important to me. Texts: There is no text required for the course. Handouts will be used for references. These include papers published in the J. Infect. Dis., J. Clin. Microbiol., J. Pathol., Infect. Immun., Environ. Microbiol., Europ. J. Clin. Microbiol., and others including public health journals. Students are responsible for all the material presented in the handouts. Note: Students in Medical Microbiology 603 may take the American Society for Microbiology Registry examination in Clinical and Public Health Microbiology immediately following the course. The examination is given only once a year (June). Application for the examination must be made by you during the first weeks of the semester. Registration for the examination must be postmarked by March 1. Students interested in working after graduation in a clinical microbiology laboratory are strongly urged to take the examination because it is required for employment by many laboratories. The examination is rather difficult and should be taken while material from this or a similar course is "fresh in your mind," or at the end of your first year of work in an appropriate microbiologic setting.
