INTERSKI 2011 ST.ANTON TEAM FINLAND POWER OF MOTIVATION

EXPERIMENTAL LEARNING FOR KIDS AND ADULTS ALIKE Utilizing the properties of modern skis in an efficient manner allows for a motivating and rewarding learning experience for all ages. Finland s workshop lets you experiment and find ideas to improve the learning experience of your customers. - MOTIVATION, EMOTION, PROGRESSION Challenge Our customers today are in bad physical shape. They don t have the skills they used to have, as their time and interest is drawn by many other activities and possibilities. Opportunity Skiing is more high performance, skis are easier to use, so skiing is accessible to more people, than ever before - with less effort. Call for action There is a real-life customer need for new avenues of ski instruction, new approaches to teaching and new ideas on learning. FINLAND ALPINE WORKSHOP Workshop We will bring the theoretical, scientific background provided by Mr. Mikko Uosukainen during a lecture on Motivation onto slope and reality. We will talk about an environment conducive to learning and focus on the basics. We aim at reducing our teaching into methodological minimum for the benefit of our customers. KEY TAKEAWAYS Efficient use of skis for all skill levels Experiment-based learning method Immediately applicable teaching tool 3

FREESTYLE AS A KEY FACTOR OF EFFECTIVE LEARNING! The conception of snowboarding as a fun and creative sport often differs from the snowboard school experience. In our opinion snowboarding is more than just technically correct turns. Although it s challenging and fun to carve the slope, we also want to bring out other aspects of snowboarding. Most of the riders are focused on freestyle riding, because it s more versatile and fun. We think this brings out the core idea of snowboarding: creativity, self expression and freedom. And that is what we want to include in our snowboard school lessons as well. Based on our university level research, snowboarding is most effectively learned with the student-based approach and help of suitable environment. The development of the fundamental snowboarding skills in all levels can be achieved faster and more effectively by integrating freestyle-elements into the education from the very beginning. During our workshop we will present these ideas in practice. Come and see how motivating and fun learning can be! FINLAND SNOWBOARD WORKSHOP KEY TAKEAWAYS Freestyle as a way to improve fundamental snowboarding skills FUN and motivating learning-environment Student based, effective learning method 5

LEARNING ALPINE AND CROSS- COUNTRY SKIING BASIC SKILLS IN SLOPES WITH XC-SKIES According to the Finnish ski-teaching philosophy skiing should be enjoyable and the students motivated. The teacher s own role is enhanced and instead of copying the teacher s performance it s more important to create an environment that supports the learning process. Skiing on the slopes using cross-country equipment creates, even for a good ski-instructor, a new and motivating environment. The lighter equipment poses new challenges for balance and at the same time eg. the ski-instructor can experience the same uncertainty that the first-time skier experiences. How will the alpine basic turn succeed when done on cross-country skis? The narrow skis and light boots produce different stimuluses for the development of balance. Would you dare to try yourself? Skiing on the slopes using cross-country equipment creates, even for a good skiinstructor, a new and motivating environment. FINLAND CROSS-COUNTRY WORKSHOP KEY TAKEAWAYS Find your inner motivation Skiing with XC-skies sustains normal alpine skiing Learning by skiing - how to handle various conditions 7

SIMULATION AS A TOOL IN ADAPTIVE ALPINE SKIING - CAPABILITY TO MEET NEW CHALLENGES Finnish ski instructors has adapted Ski School for everyone -philosophy in our ski instruction training programs. Use of simulation is an essential part of learning to understand student with challenges. In this simulation we are demonstrating dissimilarities between able bodied and disabled in various manner. We also demonstrate how disability can affects to skiing techniques and balance. This can be achieved f ex by blurring the vision, restricting field of vision or creating artificial disability in limb(s). Own feelings are deeper by taking part of this kind of hands on experience and students are more motivated to offer ski school services to everyone. FINLAND ADAPTIVE SKIING WORKSHOP Able bodied cannot truly experience challenges the disabled skiers can face in slopes. But using simulation ski instructors can understand better what kind of situations physically disabled and visually impaired can meet in ski resort. Own feelings are deeper by taking part of this kind of hands on experience and students are more motivated to offer ski school services to everyone. KEY TAKEAWAYS Ski school for all Simulation as a tool Skills to manage challenges with disability 9

LEARNING TELEMARK SKIING IN A FUN WAY WITH FRIENDS When telemark skiing was born back in days, it was a way to have fun together, have good feelings with your friends, keeping yourself fit and possibility to get to know people. Well, also it was a way to compete with your fellows, show who the king of the hill is. This is the same that telemark skiing is nowadays. Telemark is also fysically more demanding than for example alpine skiing. There are no exact technical turns you try to learn or teach it s more of the good spirit of skiing that counts. Telemark is also fysically more demanding than for example alpine skiing and good fysical condition will come as a bonus from those nice days on the hills. This is what we want to think of telemark skiing and how to teach it too- having fun together, use of friends as support mentally and fysically and get fit! FINLAND TELEMARK WORKSHOP In our work shop we ll demonstrate how to use these things in teaching on different levels. KEY TAKEAWAYS Fun learning environment creates motivation Learning together Fitness comes as a bonus! 11

POWER OF MOTIVATION LEADING MOTIVATION CLIMATE The conception of snowsports as a fun sport including the image of freedom often differs from the ski and snowboard teaching experience. As the Finnish approach for power of motivation this lecture will open the philosophy of teaching and the instructor as an enabler with primary agenda in creating enabling motivation climate for each individual in a group. What is it that pushes you into a situation that you sense instability and makes you move to find the balance between needs and results? To release the learner working on his agenda we are turning our focus not only to technical skills but also to autonomous motivation factors. Seeing this as a combination of social togetherness, experienced autonomy and success of insight we are able to work towards a target from inside-out and really touch the deep needs that make us move. What is it that pushes you into a situation that you sense instability and makes you move to find the balance between needs and results? FINLAND LECTURE KEY TAKEAWAYS Active motivation factors for customer. All of us have the capability to manage challenges we are facing. Teaching is the core competence for the instructor, other skills are just enablers. 13
