Clinical Teaching Fellow (UCLMS) in association with Private Practice Unit The Royal Free Hospital Foundation NHS Trust. JOB TITLE: Clinical Teaching Fellow (CTF) and Resident Medical Officer (RMO) ACCOUNTABLE TO: Site Sub-Dean and Director PPU REPORTS TO: Site Sub Dean and Clinical Director Private Patients. ANNUAL SALARY: 40,000 Introduction University College London (UCL) Medical School has an annual intake of 330 students and accepts an additional 55 Oxbridge students for clinical training. The Royal Free campus provides clinical training for approximately 200 students in years 4 and 5 and staff also contribute to the earlier years. UCLMS is ranked 4 th in many league tables of UK medical schools and recently was rated first amongst London medical school for student experience. The Royal Free NHS Foundation NHS Trust has around 900 beds on its own sites. About 5,000 people are employed, and the annual turnover in 2013/14 is expected to be about 550+ million. As well as services for local people, such as accident and emergency service, and all branches of surgery and medicine, the trust is renowned for a large number of specialist services. In August 2008 the Royal Free became a founder member of UCL Partners designated as an academic health science centre by the secretary of state in March 2009. As a Clinical Teaching Fellow you will also be part of an established team of Resident Medical Officers and will, as part of a 6 person rota, provide 24-hour resident medical support to patients of admitting Consultants and Nursing Staff within the Private Patients Unit at The Royal Free London The posts are available for one year which is renewable subject to satisfactory appraisal with the sub dean and Clinical Director Private Practice Unit. JOB DESCRIPTION The following job description is in 2 parts to describe the clinical teaching fellow role and the RMO role. Clinical Teaching Fellow Responsible to the Site sub Dean UCLMS Based at RFL but some duties may be at other UCLMS sites especially in Bloomsbury for early years training. The main teaching duties of the post holder are to support the delivery of high quality medical education including the development, delivery and evaluation of courses in undergraduate medical education and related activities. There may be an opportunity for undertaking a research interest in education. The post holder will be expected to participate in the delivery of teaching and assessments required of medical students at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. Participate in the development, planning, coordination, delivery and evaluation of undergraduate courses. CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES To provide emergency medical intervention when required. To carry out cardiac arrest and other emergency procedures as per hospital policy. Send medical discharge summaries to GP within 24hr of discharge. To carry the RMO bleep at all times to enable contact to be maintained throughout the span of duty. To work in full compliance with Clinical Governance regarding untoward patient incidents, near misses or official complaints, providing written reports and completion of Hospital incident forms. 2. RESPONSIBILITY FOR PATIENTS To visit each clinical ward area as requested and at the start of shift before returning at for night Work with the patient s multi-disciplinary team to provide holistic client centred care. To follow Consultant s instructions for the specific regime for each individual patient To facilitate timely discharge of patients by prescribing TTA s by 15:00pm the day before planned discharge date. 3. RESPONSIBILITY FOR POLICY AND SERVICE DEVELOPMENT To participate within clinical audit both locally and nationally, when required to do so. 4. RESPONSIBILITY FOR FINANCIAL AND PHYSICAL RESOURCES Timely communication and documentation All tests and investigations for invoicing purposes Timely prescribing of TTA s to facilitate Prompt discharge to assist efficient bed management To report immediately RMO bleep failure to switchboard and the Private Patients Director of Nursing. 5. RESPONSIBILITY FOR LEADING AND MANAGING Co-ordinate & prioritise own clinical workload. Direct patient care to ward teams in accordance with named Consultants Treatment Plan. Act as conduit of information between ward staff & Consultant teams Page5

RESPONSIBILITY FOR INFORMATION RESOURCES Proficient use Cerner, Iris, RIS. Strict adherence and Information Governance and Caldicott principles. 7. RESPONSIBILITY FOR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT Active involvement in local audit Process eg infection control Active participation in research and study as supported by this post. All staff will undertake such training as is necessary to perform the duties allocated. The post holder will be responsible for their own continuing professional development and take part in continuing medical education activities in line with the requirements of their Personal Development Plan and appraisal. GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES Infection Control Infection control is everyone s responsibility. All staff, both clinical and non clinical, are required to adhere to the Trust s Infection Prevention and Control policies and procedures and the Health Act (2006) Code of Practice for the prevention and control healthcare associated infections and make every effort to maintain high standards of infection control at all times thereby reducing the risk of Healthcare Associated infections. It is the duty of every member of staff to take personal responsibility for the prevention and control of infection, as laid down in the Trust s polices and procedures which reflect the statutory requirements of the Hygiene Code. To work in close collaboration with the Infection Control Team. To ensure that monitoring of clinical practice is undertaken at the agreed frequency. To ensure that the ward environments are cleaned and maintained to the highest standards; ensuring that shortfalls are rectified, or escalate as necessary. To ensure that all relevant monitoring data and issues are provided to the Directorate s Governance structures. To ensure that all staff are released to attend infection control-related educational sessions and staff with specialist roles, e.g. link practitioners, are released to undertake their duties.
