LIFE IN BRISTOL Bristol is a vibrant and diverse community. It is well known for its exciting music scene, large variety of shops, and nightlife around the harbour. Situated next to the coast and a short distance from Welsh mountains, English countryside and Roman history, Bristol is a very popular city for both students and non-students alike. Experience Bristol History Discover the story of Bristol at the M Shed museum or step aboard the engineer Brunel s iconic ss Great Britain ship to learn about the world s first great ocean liner. Culture Take yourself on a street art walking tour of Bristol to catch a glimpse of some of world-famous graffiti artist, Banksy s most famous works. Shopping Hunt for bargains around Bristol s popular shopping centres, home to Cabot Circus, Quakers Friars, The Galleries and Broadmead; over 500 different stores to explore! Night-life Have a great night out with your new friends; experience Bristol s lively music scene and dance the night away in some of the coolest dance clubs in the UK. Food Try new and exciting food from around the world as well as local cuisine; have a traditional pub lunch or visit Bristol s Farmers Market to try local dishes, meats and vegetables. Getting around Buses It s very convenient to travel around the city by bus. Bristol s bus services are clean and comfortable, and run regular routes within and outside the city. More than eight bus services stop at the campus, a few minutes walk from the International College. Student Bus Pass is included in the accommodation price. Trains As the hub of the national rail network in the West of England, Bristol has excellent connections to destinations all over the UK, including fast services to London (90 minutes). Boat Regular boat and ferry services operate to and from waterfront attractions and key points along the harbour. Taxis Cabs are available and although they are more expensive than public transport, taxis can be convenient for short trips. Now you know more about living in the city, read on to find out what your new home in Bristol has to offer you. Sports Keep fit at UWE s Centre of Sport; use the university s sports facilities and equipment, join a competitive sports club or have fun in a fitness class with friends. Outside the city Take a trip out of Bristol to see the famous Clifton Suspension Bridge or witness the spectacular Bristol International Balloon Fiesta in August, Europe s largest hot air balloon festival. YOUR NEW HOME Your accommodation will have everything you need to help you feel at home from the moment you arrive in Bristol. Conveniently located The residence is situated on campus within easy walking distance of the College. The city centre, supermarkets, restaurants and cafés are just a bus ride away. Well-equipped All bedrooms include a single bed, study desk, chair, lots of storage and bathroom facilities. Kitchens are fully-equipped and modern with a fridge, freezer, cooker and microwave. Multi-culture In your new home, you will have the chance to live, meet and make friends with people from all over the world. It is a great opportunity to learn more about different countries, cultures and languages. Private and clean Make yourself at home in your own private bedroom which has a private bathroom just for you. Shared kitchen facilities are also available. A regular cleaning service is included in the accommodation cost. There is also access to laundry facilities for you to wash your clothes. Safe and secure Feel at ease in your new home with on-site security and maintenance staff to help you solve any problems, secure access doors, and 24-hour CCTV security cameras. Social spaces Enjoy comfortable lounge areas and access to numerous facilities on campus; ideal places to relax after your day s classes with your new friends. Independent living Our accommodation is designed for independent student life. This means students will be responsible for cooking their own meals and also cleaning their own rooms and clothes. Included benefits All bills (electricity, gas and water) and internet (broadband and/or WiFi) are included in the accommodation price. You are also automatically exempt from paying Council Tax if you live in campus accommodation. You will also receive a free student starter pack containing useful items, basic bedding and cooking equipment (see right for more details). Student starter pack To make your move as organised as possible we have created a starter pack that provides many of the basic items you will need to settle into your new accommodation so you don t have to rush around the shops on your first day. This is an extra benefit that would not be available in privately rented accommodation. If you want to extend your tenancy you will need to give the College at least two weeks notice before your tenancy end date. The accommodation prices will go up for the 2015/16 academic year. * Your 250 deposit will be returned to you when you move out of your room. Please note, your deposit will not be returned if the room is left in a bad condition, if there are damages to the room, or if there are any outstanding payments on the student account. Students may be required to change rooms during their stay. All prices shown are correct at time of publication but are subject to change. HOW TO BOOK YOUR ACCOMMODATION Follow the simple steps below to book your accommodation and use the answers to the right for any questions you may have. Step 1 Use the Accommodation Dates and Prices page to choose the option that covers the full length of your course at the College. This includes any Preparatory English courses you may be studying before your main university preparation course begins. Step 2 Complete the Accommodation Booking Form online here. You will be asked to provide the name and contact details of a guarantor. Step 3 When you have submitted your Accommodation Booking Form, you will receive an email confirming your accommodation option and information on how to pay (see next page as well). To accept your accommodation, you have one week to make the required first payment towards your accommodation fees and sign the online terms and conditions. Remember to also email the College evidence of your payment. Step 4 Confirm your arrival details by completing the online Arrival Form here. You must complete this before the accommodation confirmation deadline written on your tenancy agreement (usually eight days before the main arrival weekend for your intake). If you book your accommodation on or after this date, you will have one week to confirm your arrival details. Accommodation guarantee We can guarantee accommodation to all students who return their Accommodation Booking Form before the dates below. If you send your form after the date, we cannot guarantee your accommodation and you will be given the next available room which may not be your first choice. Questions and answers What is a guarantor? A guarantor is someone who will be legally responsible for any accommodation fees you are unable or fail to pay. Can I change the length of my accommodation? You cannot change your accommodation length after you have booked and signed the terms and conditions. What is evidence of payment? Evidence of payment can be a copy of the payment receipt, bank statement, or bankers draft. What happens if I miss the accommodation confirmation deadline? If you do not confirm your arrival details by the accommodation confirmation date, your accommodation agreement may be cancelled and your room may be given to another student to book. If your accommodation agreement is cancelled you will be offered the next available room after you have confirmed your arrival date. If you decide not to take this room, your first payment will be returned to you. Your 250 deposit will however be kept as an administration fee. When can I move into my room? You will be able to move into your room as soon as you arrive, but only if you have first sent us your first payment and have agreed to the terms and conditions. Can I get a refund if I leave the College? If you leave the College for any reason, after starting your course accommodation fees will not be refunded. HOW TO PAY FOR YOUR ACCOMMODATION Read the below information to find out how you can make payments towards your accommodation. Please note, if we do not receive the first payment and signed tenancy agreement before you arrive, you will not be able to move into your room when you arrive. How can I pay? Before you arrive, you can make your first payment by bank transfer or bankers draft (made payable to the College, see bank details). Remember to include evidence of your first payment when you return your signed tenancy agreement to reserve your chosen accommodation option. Don t forget to include your family name and student number (found on your offer letter) as payment reference. When you arrive at the College, you can pay your remaining accommodation fees by credit or debit card (plus a 30 administration fee). Please note: The 250 deposit is used to book your accommodation and will be returned to you when you move out of your accommodation. Your deposit will not be returned to you if your room is left in a bad condition, if there are damages to your room, or if there are any accommodation fees left to pay. If your visa application is unsuccessful, please send a copy of your visa refusal documents (or other evidence) to the College and we will refund all the accommodation fees you have paid.
