Bachelor s degree study program Business Administration The aim of the Business Administration Bachelor s degree study program is to provide students with academic education and higher level professional qualification in Business Administration, develop this branch of science in order to, when integrating in the European Union, not only to preserve the intellectual potential of the Republic of Latvia, but also stimulate its further effective development according to world s globalization processes. With Bachelor s degree of Social Sciences in Business Administration you can work in the state and private companies, banks, state administration, municipal and research institutions, design and innovation institutions as well as in services providing information. The Bachelor s study program allows achieving the level of skills and knowledge enabling the person to professionally and successfully work in all above-mentioned institutions or pursue the Master s degree in Business Administration or other branches in Latvia and abroad. In the four year Bachelor s degree study program students acquire necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills. In the first two academic years all the participants of study program have a joint program. It prescribes such academic courses that create a basic level of knowledge for the Bachelor s degree of Social Sciences in Business Administration. The acquisition of the study program s obligatory choice courses (part B study courses) start in the third academic year and it is possible to choose one of the nine study subprograms. They are: Economic Informatics (EI); Public Administration (PA); Organization Management (OM); Environment and Management of Entrepreneur-ship (EME); International Economic Relations (IER); International Business (IB); Tourism and Hotel Management (THM); Marketing (M); Quality Management (QM). Total size of the Study Program is 160 credits. The Academic courses of the study program are divided into three parts: Part A compulsory study courses composing 52.1% (76 credits) of the program range (Bachelor s thesis excluded). In Part A the compulsory general courses of the University of Latvia give 20 credits, compulsory basic courses of social sciences 24 credits and compulsory basic courses of business administration science 32 credits; Part B compulsory option study courses compose 39.7% (58 credits) of the program range (Bachelor s thesis excluded). Compulsory option part includes the courses in the branches of the business administration science according to the 9 study subprograms. 1
Part C free option courses compose 8.2% (12 credits) of the program range (Bachelor s thesis excluded) in every subprogram. The study program envisages one final examination Bachelor s thesis gives 14 credits or 8.7% of the total program range. Acquirable degree: Bachelor s degree of Social Sciences in Business Administration Study forms: Full time Studies working days from 8.30 a.m. until 6.00 p.m., Part- time Studies Saturdays or Sundays from 8.10 a.m. until 6.40 p.m. Full time Studies 4 years, Part- time Studies 4.5 years. Economic Informatics The aim of the Business Administration Bachelor s degree subprogram Economics Informatics is to propose students knowledge and skills in business information and administration system projecting, development, maintenance, evaluation and perfection. The subprogram gives an opportunity to obtain the Bachelor s degree with rights to continue studies in Master s degree. In order to provide students preparation with adequate competitiveness in labor market, the subprogram Economic Informatics it is planned: to acquire Business Administration and Economics courses necessary for entrepreneurship organizing; to acquire IT courses about computer network web technologies for practical use, designing of information systems and data bases, information systems of enterprises and offices, if desired, also about modern technology of data collection and web programming; to give an opportunity for students to take part in development of information systems and research work; in the study process to extensively use modern computer technologies and software, providing students the access to computer laboratory resources and possibilities; in the final papers to develop new solutions for electronic business systems designing, improvement, introduction in the organization, as well as to research and to acquire newest IT possibilities; to assign the conduction of the study courses to lecturers who have received experience in different projects and development and education of electronic business system designing and not only have a good knowledge in information technology applications theoretical aspects, but also share with practical work experience; to provide correspondence of study course content connected with IT to the worldwide generally accepted practice and for the needs Latvian labor markets; for the knowledge acquisition to fully use world s study literature providing in the library of the faculty a wide latest range of study literature about information systems and their designing, IT, e-business and e-commerce; to use modern computer technologies in the presenting of study courses, designing the so called e-courses that enable students and lecturers to cooperate using internet opportunities; to provide that e-courses allow the student to access lecture materials, tasks, tests, communicate with lecturer from any place in the world. Economic Informatics subprogram graduates are able to use the latest IT for the support of entrepreneurship: construct new information systems, accomplish and improve existing, introduce and maintain new program packages in the establishment. They work as business analysts, information systems designers, user consultants and system engineers in big and well-know IT and manufacturing 1
enterprises, public institutions, banks, also in small enterprises, because nowadays work with computers is unavoidable and advanced PC skills are required. From others the students of Business Administration the ones studying Economic Informatics differ by having acquired IT and being able to successfully use them in entrepreneurship. From the students of computer sciences the ones studying Economic Informatics differ by knowledge of entrepreneurship, accounting, finance and methods of management. Public Administration The aim of the subprogram Public Administration is to deepen perception about work content and character in the field of public administration, to conduce for it the digestion of necessary knowledge, skills and acquirements as well as to prepare for the research paper and studies in the master s degree. To attain the objective following tasks are projected: to acquire knowledge and comprehensive skills for work in the different public administration areas state, municipal establishment and nongovernmental organizations; to acquire knowledge that is required for work in state and municipal establishments, non-governmental organizations and private structures in order to promote their successful function and career growth; to organize study process and research work to make, systematize, expand and deepen base of knowledge in the field of public administration. Students after studies and in the study period can work in: local city and rural municipality; Riga and other city councils and their departments; Ministries: - welfare and health at work intuitions, - education and Scientific research institutions, - public utilities enterprises and institutions, judiciaries, policies, Home Guards and protective departments; State Revenue Service and in customs office, the parliament of Latvia as lawyers, political organizations, diplomatic and councilor services; intersectional institutions of state administration; international, cross border and non-political organizations; private departments. After the acquisition of Bachelor s degree in Business Administration subprogram Public Administration it is possible to continue studies in Master s degree. 2
Organization Management The aim of the subprogram Organization Management is to provide a chance to acquire knowledge that is required to be able to make well-grounded decisions in different organization management levels of economics. Economic organizations (incl. enterprises) functions in different economic sectors both manufacturing of material goods and area of services. Therefore the content of study courses is set so that it gives an opportunity for students to get to know the management specifics of different organization branches. As the study program gives an opportunity to acquire the necessary basic knowledge in order to qualitatively work in organization management, then the graduates of the Business Administration subprogram Organization Management have determined competitive advantages in labor market and no problems to find interesting work. Graduates are working in manufacturing enterprises, service industry and administrative bodies occupying different positions. The acquired knowledge provides an opportunity to make a successful career. Considering sudden development of science the acquisition of Bachelor s degree is only the first stage in higher education, Bachelor s degree in the subprogram Organization Management gives good opportunities to study in Master s program. The Business Administration subprogram Organization Management of University of Latvia is used by many leading enterprise workers to consolidate their knowledge about business of an enterprise and its successful conditions of organization, because not always it is enough to have practical experience in order to successfully guide the enterprise to target achievement, therefore qualitative extra education is required. International Economic Relations The students are offered to acquire knowledge in international economics and entrepreneurship, international finance and marketing as well as to acquire skills in the field of external trade adjustment and international banking. The study courses help realizing contemporary functioning principles of the global economic and the latest tendencies, ascertaining the position of single countries in the world market as well as appreciating competitiveness of country and development perspectives in the future. The students work out substantive research projects, participate in international students conferences, discussions and debates. The graduates of the study subprogram work in the field of international economic relations in different international organizations, public authorities, embassies, banks and also in private business. International Business International business studies prepare specialists with wide theoretical and practical knowledge for an effective work in the changing business environment in market globalization and internationalization conditions. The mechanism of competition, understanding of its advantages and threats, ability to conform to impetuous changes at the market and aptitude of effective decision making and unordinary resolutions are the most important aims of the study program. The students are offered special study courses connected with international entrepreneurship: multicultural business relations, international advertisement, international entrepreneurship environment, entrepreneurship in the EU, international banking business and others. The study subprogram graduates work in various international organizations, banks and also in private business. After obtaining the Bachelor s degree the graduates are offered an opportunity to deeper acquire the chosen subprogram in Master s degree. Tourism and Hotel Management The content of the subprogram Tourism and Hotel Management is made to provide the students with extensive knowledge and perception about ongoing processes in tourism industry. Besides theoretical knowledge students acquire practical skills for developing different projects in hotel sector, tourism object research and new tourism product development. The acquirable study courses: give comprehension about tourism industry as a system functioning regularities, which are particularly important in the conditions of Latvia; allow gathering information about Latvia as a travelling destination for the nearest and more distant tourism markets, to accomplish the research of those advantages and disadvantages and analysis; give knowledge and practical skills to estimate and analyze tourism influence on economical, social, natural and cultural environment discovering the positive and negative complexions of tourism development; prepare for practical work in tourism industry enterprises (hotels, agencies and information centers) and public authorities; help to accomplish independent research and market analysis of tourism in order to develop and initiate new tourism products; offer an opportunity to start one s own business of tourism, participate in different projects in regions of Latvia connected to tourism development. The subprogram offers wide and sufficiently deep knowledge about the most important problems of tourism branches as well as prepares practical work in various tourism enterprises and establishments both in Latvia and foreign countries. 4
Environment and Management of Entrepreneur-ship The aim of the subprogram Environment and Management of Entrepreneurship is to give a possibility to acquire effective methods of a manager, specific grounding of administrative decisions, functioning regularities of market economy, to acquire practical skills in processing and analyzing of information. To attain the objective following tasks are projected: to give perception about complicacy of economical, social and ecological processes and their methods of their management and decision making; to adduce knowledge about management decision making; to give knowledge about methods of information acquirement and processing; to give practical acquirements about composition and use of economics processes mathematical models; to give knowledge about economic value of environment and its assessing methods in the market research and analysis; to acquire practical skills about development forecasting of social economic processes. Business Administration subprogram Environment and Management of Entrepreneur-ship graduates are managers-analysts of entrepreneurship with developed substantive thoughts, analytic point of view in assessing management situations and decision making, knowledge about many analysis and forecasting methods and models. Graduates successfully compete in the labor market, conduct their own enterprises, work in leading positions in Latvia and in foreign enterprises, bank and credit offices, analysis and planning departments, ministries, municipalities, research institutes etc. Marketing The aim of the subprogram Marketing is to provide deep marketing knowledge acquisition to make the students able to perform management functions in enterprises, to get ready for research work and studies in Master s program. To attain the objectives following tasks are projected: to acquire knowledge about organizing of marketing, product reaching the consumers and the satisfaction of consumer needs; to acquire knowledge, which is required for the functioning of an enterprise and influences its successful operation in internal and external market; to acquire theoretical and practical knowledge about consumer behavior, price making strategy, quantitative methodology of marketing and logistics, marketing research. Study subprograms are provided for middle and higher level managers in both private enterprises and institutions of state and municipalities; marketing managers who without assistance can maintain and improve the enterprise operation in the field of marketing. 5
After Bachelor s degree study program graduates have the possibility to continue studies in Master s degree study subprogram Marketing Research. Quality Management The aim of the subprogram Quality Management is to provide a deep knowledge acquisition in the field of quality management so that it is possible to perform management functions in organizations, to get ready for research work and studies in Master s program. To attain the objectives following tasks are projected: to deeply acquire theoretical and practical knowledge connected to quality, using internationally approved quality management systems (ISO 9000, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, TQM, ISO 18000); to analyze distinguished models of entrepreneur-ship, basing on the latest science and practice development tendencies; to acquire quality providing preventive and operative methods; to analyze possible process quality inadequacy reasons and its diversion methods, to acquire process improvement methodology, to research the level of client satisfaction; versatile analysis of production process, organization certification possibilities and other problems connected with quality providing; to learn to use the acquired knowledge for system development, maintaining, improvement and assessment of quality management in a particular organization. The subprogram is provided for middle and highest level managers in both private enterprises and institutions of state and municipalities; quality managers who without assistance can create enterprise quality management systems (also integrated) can maintain and accomplish them.
