TSTC Marshall Receives Funding for Veterans Benefits Coordinator Texas State Technical College has received more than $400,000 in state funding to create a new veterans center on campus and expand support services to veteran students. The grant comes from federal Wagner-Peyser workforce training funds managed by the governor s office. The funding will be split between the TSTC Waco, West Texas, and Marshall campuses. The addition of the grand money will allow TSTC Marshall to add a full time veterans benefits coordinator. Currently, TSTC Marshall serves 35 students who are veterans or veterans dependents. The addition of this grant comes on the heels of the announcement that Texas State Technical College has been designated a 2015 Military Friendly School. Now in its sixth year, the Military Friendly Schools designation and list by Victory Media is the premier, trusted resource for post-military success. Military Friendly provides service members transparent, data-driven ratings about post-military education and career opportunities. TSTC Marshall is proud of our Military Friendly School designation--we work hard to maintain it. We are proud to claim that approximately 25% of our faculty and staff are veterans, as am I. You won t find any college setting that is more welcoming and understanding of the sacrifices our military members have made, said TSTC Marshall President Randall Wooten. The Military Friendly Schools designation is awarded to the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to embrace military students, and to dedicate resources to ensure their success in the classroom and after graduation. The methodology used for making the Military Friendly Schools list has changed the student veteran landscape to one much more transparent, and has played a significant role over the past six years in capturing and advancing best practices to support military students across the country. The survey captures over 50 leading practices in supporting military students and is available free of charge to the more than 8,000 schools approved for Post-9/11 GI Bill funding. Congratulations to Mario Cantu for 5 years of service with Phi Theta Kappa.

TSTC Marshall Receives Fast Start II Grant. Texas State Technical College has received more than $320,000 from the Texas Workforce Commission for the Fast Start II. The Fast Start II grant funds programs that will: Focus on the current and future needs of Texas employers; Enable students to obtain postsecondary certificates and degrees at an accelerated pace in high-demand occupations, as identified by Texas employers; Incorporate competency-based learning techniques, including direct assessment programs; Feature a variety of delivery methods (e.g., classroom, online) that are uniquely designed to maximize job preparedness for identified groups; and Be designed for rapid deployment; and/or Be designed for replication statewide. The funds will aid in the development of two new CBL programs (welding at West Texas and HVAC at the TSTC North Texas center) and to redevelop the CBL training program in Nurse Assistant to further compress the training time required. Funding would also expand capacity of the CBL Machining/CNC program at Waco s Hutto center. There is strong labor market demand for each of these programs. Funds requested will be used to purchase essential training equipment and, in some cases, to provide scholarships for students. TSTC is in the process of developing training modules for faculty in how to convert traditional programs into CBL programs. With the new CBL instructional programs as models and the new CBL conversion training developed, TSTC will be well-positioned to assist the development of these and other CBL programs at other Texas community and technical colleges. Of those funds awarded, nearly $106,000 has been awarded to fund equipment and instructional materials for the Competency-Based Learning Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration program to be implemented at the TSTC North Texas Center.

TSTC SGA Hosts Campus Clean Up Day In an effort to maintain the beauty of the TSTC campus, members of the Marshall Student Government Association (SGA) teamed up with the maintenance staff for a Campus Clean-up Day on Friday September 19, 2014. SGA members assisted with different projects such as such as removing weeds from the flower beds and trash pickup. SGA is the governing body that represents students, assist with providing student activities, and advises the college administration on issues of student interest and concern. You can reach any member of SGA at sga@marshall.tstc.edu. Please like the SGA page on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/tstcmarshallsga. The next SGA meeting will be held on Wednesday October 1, 2014 in the housing commons. September Events Snapshot 911 Remembrance Day Constitution Day Spelling Bee Information Fair
