CALHOUN COMMUNITY COLLEGE CAMPUS TOURS Materials to give to prospective students: Before each tour give the prospective student a Calhoun Viewbook and possible program cards for the programs they may be interested in. Materials to take for you to have for reference: Printed campus map; Current printed class schedule; Fast Facts about Calhoun (these can be talking points during the tour) Ask the student if he/she needs verification of being on campus. If they brought something, get Ms. Tammy Dean to sign their sheet or print them a letter (DO NOT SIGN LETTER YOURSELF). Take a copy of the current schedule and show them how the buildings are coded in the schedule. Print in black are instructions to you. The red text is your script but we encourage you to put it in your own words. Welcome to Calhoun. My name is. I am a Calhoun Warhawk Student Ambassador. I want to give you a copy of the Huntsville campus map and I will point out things on the map as we go along. Calhoun has two campuses, this campus here in Huntsville and our main campus, located in Decatur. The Huntsville campus is all located in one building. The plus side to that is once you are in the building, you don t have to worry about leaving in the rain or cold and driving to another building to find another parking place. Calhoun is Accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award Associate Degrees and Certificates.
With almost 12,000 credit students enrolled this fall, Calhoun remains Alabama s largest two year college and the 6th largest higher education institution in the state that includes two year and four year institutions. Ahead of us are Auburn University, the University of Alabama, Troy State, the University of Alabama Birmingham and the University of South Alabama. Almost 4,000 of those 12,000 students attend this campus. We are very proud of our quality programs. Currently, we have 22 degree programs are nationally accredited. We offer both day and evening classes. Currently that is from 8 am to 10 pm. It is best to be at the Campus Police desk and point in the general areas as you do the next paragraph. Our room numbers, 100 s through 300 s, are upstairs. The 100 s are to the left of the main lobby where we are now (when facing the back main entrance), while all the 200 s and 300 s are to the right of the main lobby. All room numbers below 100 are downstairs on the first floor. Here in the Lobby, we have campus police coverage 24/7. The Campus Police desk is also where you get your parking decal. Our IT office is located opposite of the police in the lobby. Proceed to the Student Center and show them the Bookstore and where food is available and then proceed to the areas discussed. Just to the right of the lobby is the Student Center where breakfast, lunch, and dinner are available for purchase. Kiera s lunchbox has items available during breakfast and dinner times, while Chik fil a is sold during lunch.
Our Bookstore is located here just as you enter the Student Center from the main lobby. They also have snacks and drinks available. Across the main lobby in the 300s are the business classes. In room 301 stacked classes are held (example: biology classes, have 2 different sections in one room, they stagger their labs) The 200 s include the GED testing area, Adult Education, Math bridge academy, and business and industry classes. Come back through the main lobby and show them the Admissions and Business Offices then proceed down the back hallway and show them where the Financial Aid office is located. Just to the left of the main lobby, is the Administration offices, including.admissions where you get your Student ID s and the Business Office. The Financial Aid office is on the back hallway behind the Admissions area. After you have shown them the Financial Aid office proceed back to the hallway and go across to the Library and show them around there. Across the large hallway from the Admissions area is our Library. If books aren t available at this campus they can have them sent over from the Decatur campus. In the back of the library is a room called the Multimedia room that is full of computers. These are available to students when classes are not meeting there. Also the Sunroom toward the back of the Library is a reading area. Students can print with a print card, make copies on copy machine for 10 cents each.
Go on down the hallway and show them the elevator and discuss what you see along the way Also on this side and upstairs in the 100s, you will find Social Sciences classes and computer labs/classes and the Cyber Café Take them downstairs and show them around and explain about the Weekend College Program below. Downstairs you will find English classes in the 30 s & 40 s; Math classes are in the in 20 s. Also downstairs is the 3 weekend program also known as compressed delivery. In this program you can finish an entire course within 3 weekends, essentially in a month. You go only on the weekends to class, the rest is online during the week. For the first weekend a student would go Friday, Saturday, and Sunday but after that only Saturday and Sundays. all subjects except math and science are offered same price, same credit. Due to the limited number of class meetings, this program is designed with a goal of zero student absences. Students can register for one subject at a time and still maintain full time status. During fall and spring semesters, four (4) sessions are offered, and during summer semester, three (3) sessions are offered. However, class subject options are limited in the Summer. Here you can work you way back upstairs and toward the main lobby. You can discuss the following bulleted items as you go. Labs: Science labs located upstairs near the 100 classrooms
Math/Writing Lab is located upstairs by the 100 classrooms toward the end of the hall by the elevators. The math lab is open Monday through Thursday 9 am to 9 pm and Saturday 8:30 to 2:00. Math lab has computers as well as solutions manuals for certain classes Currently there is no writing lab assistant on duty but the writing lab has computers as well. Offices: Adjunct instructor offices are located near the elevator on bottom level Professor offices are located throughout the upper and lower levels. Thank them for coming. I want to thank you for coming out today and for your interest in Calhoun. Do you have any additional questions? Do you need a letter showing you took a tour today? Students can pick up their letter of confirmation from Ms. Tammy Dean once the tour concludes. Should you have questions about the process, call Lanita Parker (256) Should you have questions about the campus during the tour, take them by the appropriate office or see Ms. Tammy Dean or Mr. Chuck Brasher at the conclusion of the tour.
CALHOUN COMMUNITY COLLEGE Fast Facts For over 60 years, Calhoun Community College has served the community, providing educational and training opportunities across north Alabama. Who We Are: With 11,323 credit students enrolled fall 2012, Calhoun remains Alabama s largest twoyear college and the 6th largest higher education institution (two-year and four-year) in the state (behind Auburn University, the University of Alabama, Troy State, the University of Alabama Birmingham and the University of South Alabama). Calhoun continues to prepare tomorrow s engineers. Over 450 Calhoun students have declared majors in Pre-engineering, Science or Mathematics. Calhoun is home to the Alabama Robotics Technology Park, a partnership with AIDT. The College enrolled over 1,000 students in two Nursing and six Allied Health programs for the Fall 2012 semester. Scores posted by the most recent graduates of Calhoun s associate degree (registered nurses) and Licensed Practical Nursing programs continue to be impressive. Passage rate for the registered nursing students is 88% compared to 89.79% (state) and 90% (national). Scores for Calhoun s LPN graduates are 97%, exceeding state (90.79%) and national (84%) averages. Calhoun has the state s first and only associate degree program in Biotechnology, created in partnership with the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology. The College is proud of its quality programs. Currently, 22 degree programs are nationally accredited. According to a 2012 report from the Alabama Community College System, Calhoun s economic impact to the community and state is substantial. Total local economic impact is $279,284,280 for a return on $1 investment (ROI) of 12.1, the highest among the state s two-year colleges. Calhoun is the region s community college: Calhoun demonstrates that economic development needs to be a regional affair Calhoun gives us a tremendous advantage. Former Congressman Bud Cramer, October 2008 ACHE (Alabama Commission on Higher Education) data indicates that Calhoun remains the college of choice for students from this region. Of the students from this area who attend public college, 35% of those from Madison County, 53% of those from Limestone County, 47% of those from Morgan County and 33% of those from Lawrence County chose to attend Calhoun. Calhoun s Huntsville/Cummings Research Park campus is the only two-year college campus in the nation located in a major research park.
Data from major state universities in Alabama verify that transfer students from Calhoun perform as well as or better than students who begin their college careers at the respective universities. The top five institutions to which Calhoun students transfer are: -University of Alabama - Huntsville - 23% -Athens State University - 18% -University of Alabama - 15% -Auburn University - 13% -University of North Alabama - 7% Calhoun s revenue breakdown for was as follows: -Tuition and Fees - $34,749,625 or 61.7% -State Appropriation - $20,617,533 or 36.61% -Other - $953,930 or 1.69% The College s expenditures from unrestricted funds for the academic year totaled $44,763,636. Expenditures from restricted funding (grants) were $44,784,318, putting total expenditures for the year at $89,467,955. Developed in partnership with Athens State University, the College recently opened Phase I of the new Alabama Center for the Arts, located in downtown Decatur. The Alabama State Board of Education has approved construction for Phase II (drama and music) of the Center. During the 2012 fall semester, Calhoun officially opened the Alabama Center for Excellence in Clean Energy Technology (ACECET) on the Decatur campus. Funded through a $3.47M U.S. Department of Labor grant, the ACECET houses the College s Renewable Energy associate degree program, the state s first and only such program. Calhoun has the lowest full-time equivalent funding per student in the Alabama Community College System at $2,688. System-wide state college funding levels range from $2,688 to $8,077 per FTE.
