LIFE06 ENV/FIN/000195 PROJECT NAME Controlled Treatment of TBT- Contaminated Dredged Sediments for the Beneficial Use in Infrastructure Applications. Case: Aurajoki Turku, Finland STABLE 3
Basic information First application in November 2004 Project awarded in spring 2006 Time schedule 1.4.2006 31.3.2009 Application process was complicated and time consuming Good arguments needed and they are judged in EU level Budget 3,7 M, EU contribution 0,98 M 4
Main targets for the project The target of the project is to develop new environmentally friendly and cost effective stabilisation method for contaminated soil Method is called process stabilisation This kind of method is not known in EU Stabilized dredging masses will be utilized in Pansio harbour as harbour field structures Project target areas are Pansio and river Aurajoki 5
Direct target group for the project Turku harbour has the same tbtproblem as many other harbours They want to solve tbt-problem in sophisticated way European organisations dealing with the sediments, european view is very important in EU finaced projects 6
Main advantages Less environmental risks due to the fact that no unprocessed sediment into basin More homogenous material due to better mixture Less bibder needed Lower costs? 7
Main tasks of Life project Determination of binder recipes Devolopment of process stabilisation method, testing, management and control Life-Cycle assessment Dissemination Management and reporting 8

Life project parties 4/5 TURKU HARBOUR Important western harbour Fighting with the tbt-problems Wants to be development orientated organisation Co financer of the project 13
Life project parties 5/5 TERRAMARE Leading dredging and harbour construction contractor in Nordic Countries Developed environmental dredging technology since 2002 More that 10 environmental dredging projects during last years Tbt-contractor in Vuosaari 14
Dredging, main plant First pilot on Pansio military harbour in 12.2007 Backhoe dredger Marika + environmental grab Barges Adam ja David Second phase Grab dredger Kahmari + environmental grab Barges Ada5 and Ada6 15
Quantities First pilot on Pansio military harbour in 12.2007 Dredging of Tbt-contaminated material uring environmental grab quantity 2 000 m3 Second phase in 10-12.2008 in river Aurajoki Dredging of Tbt-contaminated material using environmental grab quantity app. 80 000 m3 16
Environmental grab Controlled Sediment Removal: Crane Monitoring System (CMS) / CPM and Horizontal Profiling Grab (HPG) 17
Controlled by RTK-GPS, centimeter-level precision in X, Y, Z planes, real-time feedback for operator, data logging HPG is placed into the sediment (unlike cable rig buckets), and closes on true horizontal plane. Excavate in patterns of overlapping rectangles, no squeezing out of sediments. Proven minimal turbidity, spillage Environmental grab Key Features of CMS and HPG Debris 9.10.2008 handling Tapio Leinonen 18
Environmental grab 19
Environmental grab CMS + HGP Equipment proven over ten years of service Mounted on hydraulic excavator for greater precision Assures removal of contaminated sediment while minimizing overdredging Minimal mixing of water compared to pumping process 20
Accurancy in dredging Accuracy = Substantial Cost Savings 10 cm of unnecessary overdredge over 100 hectares equates to 100,000 m3 Reduction of Disposal Volume = Significant Cost Savings 21
Other dredging methods Backhoe bucket with closing mechanism Disk Cutter Cutter suction dredger 22
