3 Our products come from sustainably managed Northern forests Our wood comes mainly from family owned forests. 123,000 of them are also members of our parent company, Metsäliitto Cooperative. The Group s wood supplies by country (2013) 1,000 m 3 (solid over bark) Finland 72% Baltic countries 9% Sweden 8% Russia 11% Northern forests are rich with wood and water resources. Here wood grows much more than is harvested. With our knowhow, we turn this endlessly renewable resource into safe and recyclable products. Our target is to keep the amount of certified wood in our operations above 80%. 3

7 Continuous improvement brings benefits Development at Metsä Board s mill The utilisation of production waste such as ash from the power plant has developed positively Air emissions have decreased due to changes at the power plant Packaging board is even lighter in weight than before thanks to development in pulps Less landfill waste -98% Better air quality NOx -40% Further lightweighting of packaging board -2% Fact Efficient and smooth running of production at the mill is essential for good environmental performance and the efficient use of resources. 7
8 SAGA papers to fight food spill 1,5-year pilot was conducted with SAGA Cook & Chill papers and Lahden Ateria, a municipal foodservice Food spill was reduced by using cooking paper. Per one GN dish, one more portion can be used when the food is not stuck on the dish. Without the paper, this food would go to waste. Food spill of served food -50% Fact Cooking papers help to reduce food spill. They also save time, effort and energy in baking, cooking and washing-up. 8
9 Our by-products and waste are valuable raw materials 91% of the waste we generate is recycled in material or energy recovery. Waste management in % 9% 0% 44 % Material recycling Energy recovery Landfilled waste Hazardous waste Our main waste fractions are fibre sludge, ashes from energy production and lime ash from chemical pulp production. The by-products from our processes, such as saw dust, bark and dry wood chips are used as fuel in energy production. Other residuals can be further used e.g. as fertiliser in landfill capping or in earth construction. Surplus by-products are sold to external customers for further processing.
