IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS GRADUATE PROGRAMS FOREIGN STUDENTS SCHOLARSHIP I. Scholarship Information The scope of the scholarship The foreign scholarship students that are accepted to graduate programs in full time student status: Fee: Do not pay the annual tuition fee that is determined each year by the Board of Trustees as long as their scholarship continues. Dormitory: Are provided with the opportunity to stay at the dormitory of the university. In case the dormitory capacity is not enough, the students who reside outside the university dormitory are paid extra 250YTL monthly for 9 months. Private Health Insurance: The private health insurance of the students are made and covered by IUE. Monthly Stipend: They are paid stipend for 9 months annually to contribute to their food, book, etc. expenditures. It is 300YTL per month for 2009-2010 academic year. (Nearly 250 USD). The scholarship does not cover other expenditures of the students, transportation, transfer and bureaucratic procedures, etc expenditures. Scholarship Period The scholarship of the students accepted in full time student status includes maximum 1 academic year in English Preparatory Program and maximum 4 semesters for master programs without thesis, and 5 semesters for master programs with thesis. 1 The students whose scholarship is terminated can continue their education by paying the tuition fee. Quotas The scholarships will be given to the students of the countries determined by the Board of Trustees in the scope of the quota determined for the foreign students for 2009-2010 academic year. The application of the ones that wish to study by paying the tuition fee will be evaluated in the same quota. The scholarships are valid for 2009-2010 Academic Year. This does not cover the scholarship applications for following years. 1 Students who study in a master program with thesis complete their courses in 3 semesters. For this reason a period of 5 semesters is provided for scholarship. 1

The students whose scholarships are terminated cannot take scholarship again even if they fulfill the necessary conditions. The students whose scholarship is terminated can continue their education by paying the tuition fee. Other Regulations The scholarships awarded by the Izmir University of Economics do not bind the students with any financial or service obligations. 2

APPLICATION and EVALUATION PROCEDURE Application Requirements for the Master Programs of Graduate School of Natural Sciences For Financial Mathematics Master Program and Applied Statistics Master program, it is required to have graduated from an undergraduate (4-year) program of a higher education institution. For Management Science and Engineering Master Program, it is required to have graduated from undergraduate programs of engineering of a higher education institution. To be holding minimum SAY 60 points from ALES(Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Exam). Or minimum 475 points from GMAT (Graduate Management Aptitude Test) that has international validity for Financial Mathematics Program or minimum 650 points from quantitative part of GRE (Graduate Record Examination) Or minimum 650 points from quantitative part of GRE (Graduate Record Examination) for Applied Statistics Master Program, Management Science and Engineering Master Program To be successful in the scientific interview Approval of letter of intention about the reason of master education by the Board of Directors of the Graduate School, To bring at least one letter of recommendation. Application Requirements for PhD Programs of Graduate School of Natural Sciences To have undergraduate or graduate degrees from the departments of Mathematics, Statistics or Physics of the Faculty of Sciences or Faculty of Arts and Sciences; Mathematics Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Electrics and Electronics Engineering of Faculty of Engineering. To have minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00/4.00 or its equivalent for the applicants who have undergraduate or graduate degrees To be holding minimum SAY 70 points from ALES or from GRE (Graduate Record Examination) minimum of 685 from quantitative part, To be successful in the scientific interview and written examination. Acceptance of statement of purpose by the Graduate School Committee, Acceptance of the reference letters by the Graduate School Committee. To get adequate score from internationally valid exams such as TOEFL:550/213, KPDS:B, FCE :B, CPE : C, IELTS :6.5, CAE :C or to be successful by getting 75 over 100 from English Proficiency Exam prepared and held by School of Foreign Languages of İzmir University of Economics To bring at least one letter of recommendation. 3

(Student works, graduation project, graduation thesis, competitions, amateur works, etc.) (This regulation is valid primarily for the ones that have undergraduate diploma from fields of design), To fill in the form that includes the questions regarding the details of the work the candidate suggested making in the graduate program. To have an acceptation from Graduate School Administrative Board for the letter of intent that is prepared for indicating the reason of attending a graduate programme, Being successful in the interview, To bring at least one letter of recommendation. (*) All the exams that have the status of university entrance exam (SAT, YÖS, etc.) are valid for 2 years 4
Who cannot apply? The students who are the citizens of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and the students with dual nationality whose one of the citizenship is Turkish Republic or TRNC cannot apply for foreign students quota. IV. IZMIR and LIVING CONDITIONS İzmir İzmir is the third biggest city of Turkey in terms of population. Its population increases day by day since it has a central location in terms of transportation, industry, agriculture and trade. The city has a high tourism potential with its historical values and natural beauties. Climate Conditions In İzmir, summer time is hot and dry, winter time is warm and rainy. In spring and summer the temperature is between 20 30, and in autumn and winter the temperature is between 7 25 C. Monthly expenditures, book, etc. costs The expenditure of a student living in İzmir, (food, inner-city transportation, etc.) excluding accommodation is 500 USD monthly. Education materials like book, stationery, etc. differ according to the department, but nearly 600USD for a year is enough. V. GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT IUE Medium of Education Medium of education in Izmir University of Economics is English. All the courses are given in English. The students whose English level is not sufficient study English for 1 year in English Preparatory program. At the end of the year, the students who are successful in English Proficiency exam will continue their education from the 1 st grade. The students who have an adequate point from internationally valid exams like TOEFL, IELTS, etc. are exempt from English Preparatory class. Turkish The students that enroll to a higher education program in Turkey, where medium of education is Turkish, have to learn Turkish and improve their language level from the day they start their education until their graduation. IT Services Our university has an advanced computer infrastructure. There is wireless internet access throughout the campus. A laptop computer is allocated for each undergraduate student that begins the first grade. At the university there is a CAD laboratory with latest technological equipments, a MAC Design Laboratory, a Microprocessor and Network Laboratory, Graphics Laboratories and Digital Photography Studio. Besides, the Help Desk at the campus gives computer support services. Library In İzmir University of Economics, there is a library and a documentation center with computers and high speed Internet access established to be put in the service of the students, academicians and visiting researchers. The library is designed in a way that the users can reach the virtual library in any time and from any where. Foreign Students at IUE Besides Turkish citizen students, there are Greek, American, German, Albanian, Syrian, Russian, Japanese, Italian, Spanish, French and Azerbaijani students being educated at IUE. Academic Staff and Foreign Instructors There are 371 full time academic personnel at İzmir University of Economics. 63 of the academic staff are foreign academicians.
