Introduction 1 Introduction Product Overview The Motorola Automated ackup System (MAS) is a software package that allows for the automated backup of key customer products and for the restoration of these backups in the event of system failure. Digital backups stored in a local or remote repository replace the dependency on tapes, which must be physically changed daily and transported to an off-site location for storage. The Automated ackup System also provides a backup solution for CASMR/CAST/CSS servers, which do not have tape backup capabilities. Motorola s Automated ackup System provides many advantages over existing tapebased backup methods. Motorola expertise: ackup software, professional planning, and configuration of your backup schema by Motorola are included with the Automated ackup System. Motorola is unsurpassed in DAC 6000, CASMR/CAST/CSS, and SDM backup and restore planning, system integration, and project planning expertise. Motorola also has the field engineering and technical support resources required to successfully deploy an automated backup solution. Cost effectiveness: Reduces operating expenses with the elimination of manual backups on tape, s hipping, and s torage fees. Automation: M anual tape rotation and manual tape pickup for remote storage are not required. Reliability: Disk backup is more robust and is configured for hard drive redundancy, whereas tapes degrade over time, can become unreliable, and can be lost or damaged. Assurance: Automated alerts proactively inform remote operations personnel when a backup did not complete s ucces s fully. S torage size: E fficient backup logic stores only data that has changed since the last backup, which reduces the amount of storage space required. S ecurity: Use of secure S S H and VPN technology, along with encryption of data to a remote backup location, keeps the data safe. Introduction Added support for custom devices, backup and restore options, and the steps needed to perform all options, allowing these devices to be backed up and restored without the need for a new MAS release. Added tracking of software version for backups and devices, and added user notifications when restores are attempted with version mismatches. Added support for restoring backups to devices of the same type but different than the device of origin. Added an option to define secondary devices for a device s backup options. Active secondary devices receive an automatic restore after scheduled backups, facilitating hot spares. Added support for table sorting and page navigation on the Devices screen. Managing ackups 2 Managing ackups Managing ackups with MAS The basic functionality of MAS can be summarized as: Execute backups according to a defined schedule. Restore backups to a target device. Maintain backups as specified by a schedule. MAS runs on the NPT RAID platform. The Web-based UI is accessed using a Web browser. JavaScript must be enabled in the browser. To display the MAS UI, browse to http://nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn/mabs, where "nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn" is the IP address of the NPT server. The MAS UI is presented as a series of tabbed screens. When you are navigating through the screens, use the ack button to return to the previous screen. Getting a Quick Summary of System Status The Summary screen is the first screen displayed when you start a session. The Summary screen displays the drive space used by MAS backups on the NPT server, and the status of the last five backups. The NPT has a 250 G drive, of which approximately 200 G is available for backups. Drive usage is presented as a percentage of the total space available. If the drive usage is greater than 80 percent, Motorola TAC is automatically alerted and will contact you to discuss remedies. Managing ackups Getting a Calendar View of ackups The ackups screen allows you to view a month-by-month calendar of backups and their current statuses. You can see past backups and backups scheduled to occur in the future. Filtering options allow the view to be customized by Device type or a specific Device. Managing ackups Table 1 ackup statuses Status Pending Description The backup is scheduled to run. In Progress The backup is running. Transferring To Repository Complete Restore In Progress Complete With Errors Expired Timeout Failed The backup is being transferred to the remote repository. The backup completed normally and was copied to the remote repository. The backup is being restored. The backup completed normally but was not copied to the remote repository. The local copy is good.* The start time for the backup passed and the backup did not run, most likely because the backup was scheduled to occur when the backup system was down.* The backup ran but did not complete within the configured maximum run time.* The backup failed.* *The Motorola TAC is alerted when an error occurs, and will contact you to discuss remedies. Getting Information about an Individual ackup Hover your mouse cursor over a backup on the calendar to display a screen tip with information about the backup, including the time it was run, the device that was backed up, backup options applied, and the status of the backup. Managing ackups Figure 3: ackup Screen Tip You can also click a backup link on the calendar to open the backups Manage screen where you can view more detailed information about the backup, delete it, or restore it. Managing ackups Restoring a ackup 1. Click a backup link on the calendar on the ackups screen. 2. Use the information on the Identity tab to verify this is the backup you want to restore. 3. Click the Restore tab. 4. Optionally, select a Restore option and Target device. 5. Click Restore ackup. 6. Confirm when prompted. (Note: If there is a version mismatch between the device and the backup, you will be notified and prompted to continue in the Restore Status field. Click Continue to perform the backup with the mismatch.) Restoration status is shown as a bar graph along the bottom of the screen. Figure 5: Restore Tab Caution You may need to wait until the target device is taken down for maintenance, or have the system operator shut it down, before restoring a backup. 3 Managing Devices Managing Devices with MAS The Devices screen allows you to add, configure, and manage backup devices and device types. It is broken into two main sections: Manage Devices and Manage Device Types. Manage Devices The Manage Devices section displays the Device Name, Device Type, and IP Address of all existing devices. It also allows you to add a new device. Clicking Show for a device opens a tabbed display (Identity, ackup Options, and ackups) where you can view, delete, or modify device details. Figure 6: Manage Devices Screen Identity Tab The Identity tab displays the Device Name, Device Type, IP Address, and Username/Password for the device. Edit Identity Tab Information 1. On the Identity screen, you can modify all fields except Device Type. 2. Reenter the Password/Confirm Password after updating any field. 3. Click Update Product. ackup Options Tab Figure 7: Manage Devices - Identity Tab The ackup Options tab lists the available backup options for the device based on its device type. It displays the backup Frequency, Retention, Repository, original Start Date, Next ackup Date, and the Active status. Click the drive icon to perform a manual backup of the backup option. Options that are not active will not have new backups created according to their defined backup option schedule. View/Edit ackup Options Information 1. Click the gear icon for a ackup Option to view and/or modify the backup option details and secondary devices. 2. The Identity tab displays the Repository, Next ackup Date, Frequency, Retention, and the Active status for the backup. You can modify all fields on this screen. 3. Click Update ackup schedule after you have completed making modifications. Secondary Devices Figure 9: Manage Devices - ackup Options - Identity Tab Click the Secondary Devices tab to display the Device name, Restore Option, and the Active status for all secondary devices assigned to the device s backup option. Figure 10: Manage Devices - ackup Options Secondary Devices Tab Delete Secondary Devices 1. Click the red X to delete a Secondary device. Edit Secondary Devices 1. Click the gear icon for the Secondary device. 2. You can only edit the Active check box for a secondary device. Check the box to activate the secondary device backup. Uncheck the box to deactivate the secondary device backup. 3. Click Update Secondary device. Add Secondary Devices 1. Click Add Secondary Device on the Secondary Devices tab. 2. Select the secondary Device from the drop down box. 3. Select the applicable Restore Option from the drop down box. 4. Check the Active box to make the backup option active for the secondary device. 5. Click Create Secondary device. ackups Tab The ackups tab lists all backups for the device. The Restore Status field displays a restoration progress bar and text details of the current restore step being performed. Adding a ackup Device 1. Click Add Device on the Manage Devices screen. Figure 14: Adding a ackup Device Main Screen 2. On the Identity tab, complete the following: Device Name Enter a unique name for the device. Device Type Select the device type from the drop down box. IP Address Enter the device s IP address. User Name Enter a unique user name. Password Enter a unique password. Confirm Password Reenter the unique password. Click Create Product. 3. Click the ackup Options tab and complete the following on the Identity tab: Repository Select the applicable repository for the backup from the drop down box. Next ackup Date Use the drop down boxes to select the date and time for the next backup. Frequency Enter how frequently you want to backup the device: e.g. every 2 Days, 1 Week, etc. Retention Enter the number of backups you want the system to retain. Active Check the box to make the backup option active for the device. Click Update ackup schedule. Figure 16: Adding a ackup Device ackup Options Tab 4. (Optional) Click the Secondary Devices tab and complete the following: Device Select the secondary device from the drop down box. Restore Option Select the applicable restore option from the drop down box. Active - Check the box to make the backup option active for the secondary device. Click Create Secondary device. Figure 17: Adding a ackup Device Secondary Devices Tab Manage Device Types The Manage Device Types section allows you to view existing system defined device types as well as create and view new user defined device types. Clicking Show for a device type opens a tabbed display (Identity and ackup Options) where you can view, delete, or modify device type details. Only user defined device types can be modified or deleted. System defined device types cannot be modified or deleted! Identity Tab The Identity tab displays the device type s Long name, Short name (used in various drop down menus where a short version is needed), and Version command. You can edit user defined device type information on this screen. Click Update Product type after making any changes for these device types. ackup Options Tab Figure 19: Manage Device Types Identity Tab The ackup Options tab displays the defined backup options for the current device type. You can delete backup options for user defined device types by clicking the red X. Clicking the gear icon opens a tabbed display (Identity, ackup Steps, and Restore Options) where you can view, delete, or modify device type backup and restore options. Figure 20: Manage Device Types ackup Options Tab Identity Tab The Identity screen displays the following basic configuration information for the backup option: Name The full name of the backup option. Short name Short name of the backup option (used in UI drop downs). Description rief description of what the backup option does. Option type Either contiguous or static. Contiguous results in a unique backup stored in a unique folder with each execution. Static results in a single backup in a single folder with the data from the most recent execution of that backup option (data is retrieved /overwritten based on the verification method). Archive type Either file or directory. Indicates whether you are backing up a single file or the contents of a directory. Full path The full path on the remote device that the file/directory to be backed up is located (this field supports Tags). Filename (file archive type only) The filename of the file to be transferred to MAS from the remote device (this field supports Tags) Verification method (static option type only) The verification method used when comparing files for backup purposes. Compress method The compression method employed before transferring the file locally to MAS. You can edit configuration information for user defined device types on the Identity screen. ackup Steps Figure 21: Manage Device Types ackup Options - IdentityTab The ackup Steps screen lists the following basic backup step information for the backup option: Step type Defines the backup step type and changes the required additional step data accordingly. (See Table 3 ackup/restore Step Types for details) stderr? If checked, the step will fail if any data is received on STDERR (Standard Error). Only applicable for check_remote_process and remote_command backup steps. exit code? If checked, the step will fail on any non-zero exit code. Only applicable for check_remote_process and remote_command backup steps. You can perform the following for user defined device types on the ackup Steps screen. Figure 27: Manage Device Types ackup Options Restore Options Add Restore Steps Adding a Custom Device Type MAS v3.0 allows you to create custom user defined devices, which you can use to define backup and restore options to back up devices that are not supported in the default set supplied with the MAS software. Custom devices must have the following configuration: A Linux or UNIX-based operating system SSH, allowing password authentication and SFTP Appropriate compression commands (gzip, bzip2, zip, unzip) available in the PATH variable in the SSH login environment, if you want to use MAS compression features 1. Option Type Select either contiguous or static from the drop down box. Contiguous results in a unique backup stored in a unique folder with each execution. Static results in a single backup in a single folder with the data from the most recent execution of that backup option. Data is retrieved or overwritten based on the verification method. Archive type Select either file or directory from the drop down box. Indicates whether you are backing up a single file or the contents of a directory. Full path Enter the full path on the remote device that the file/directory to be backed up is located. (This field supports Tags). Filename (File Archive Type only) Enter the filename of the file to be transferred to MAS from the remote device. (This field supports Tags). Verification method (Static Option Type only) Enter the verification method to be used when comparing files for backup purposes. Compress method Use the drop down box to select the compression method to employ before transferring the file locally to MAS. Click Create ackup Option. Managing Repositories 4 Managing Repositories Repositories Screen The Repositories screen lists the name, IP address, and base folder of the NPT server (and optional remote repositories) to which backups are stored. y default, MAS creates backups in the local MAS storage on the NPT. Optionally, you can add a remote repository on a Network Attached Storage (NAS) server. If the backup schedule is configured to use a remote repository, MAS stores the backup locally on the MAS hard drive (NPT). After verifying that the local backup completed successfully, MAS copies the backup to the remote repository. Figure 34: Repositories Screen Motorola can provide a NAS server for an additional fee. Contact your Motorola account manager if you would like to use a Motorola NAS server. You may use your own NAS server, provided it meets the following criteria: Linux-based NAS servers Linux is the preferred operating system because it enables MAS to verify the accurate transfer of data to the NAS. Managing Repositories Adding a Remote Repository 1. On the Repositories screen, click Add repository. 2. Type the Name and IP Address of the new repository. 3. Type the path to the ase folder (directory) where backups will be stored. 4. Type the Username and Password of an account that has read/write access to that directory. 5. Click Create Repository.
