POSTGRADUATE STUDY AND RESEARCH Maritime Transport and Logistics

Thanks to Liverpool John Moores University s outstanding teaching and internationally-acclaimed research record, we are firmly positioned at the helm of advances shaping the maritime industry in the 21st century. LJMU has been providing training, education and research to the maritime sector since 1892. Based within the School of Engineering, Technology and Maritime Operations, the Liverpool Maritime Academy offers a portfolio of professional degree courses and training programmes designed specifically for the needs of the maritime sector. Ongoing research on maritime technology and maritime operations, plus our extensive industrial collaborations with organisations such as AMEC, Bibby Line, Shell, Lloyds Register and the Offshore Safety Division of the UK Health and Safety Executive, help ensure that both the curriculum and students are kept up-to-date with advances in technology and professional practice. Irrespective of the course you want to study at LJMU, you can be confident that you will enjoy a dynamic, professionally-relevant and international student experience.

World-class facilities Our Lairdside Maritime Centre is a state-of-the-art training facility that enables marine pilots, ships masters and senior navigating officers to develop and practice their skills in a realistic but risk free environment. The system has enabled the University to undertake specialist projects for port developers, to assess the impact of proposed river terminal extensions and harbour facilities on port operations. We carried out a manoeuvring and mooring risk assessment for the new Cruise Liner Terminal in the Port of Liverpool which resulted in a set of recommendations for the safe berthing and un-berthing of cruise liners. More recently the system has been involved in conducting navigational risk assessments, to identify and assess the hazards to shipping arising from the proposed development of offshore wind farms. Other facilities at the School include a wide range of transport modelling and safety decision making software, including the SCANNer and IDS (intelligent decision system). City centre location The School of Engineering, Technology and Maritime Operations is located in the Byrom Street complex in LJMU s City Campus, right in the heart of Liverpool city centre. In addition to specialist engineering facilities, Byrom Street also has a large Starbucks café, social spaces plus high quality meeting and seminar rooms and lecture theatres. The Avril Robarts Library, open 24/7 during semesters, is also located just minutes away on Tithebarn Street. World-class research Research in maritime logistics and freight transportation is managed under the aegis of the Liverpool Logistics, Offshore and Marine (LOOM) Research Institute. Over the past decade LOOM has made significant contributions to the modernisation and productivity of the marine industries. The Institute s research in safety, security and reliability has contributed to the development of decision support systems, which are used in the design and operation of large maritime engineering systems, such as ships, offshore installations and port terminals. 95% of research from LJMU s School of Engineering, Technology and Maritime Operations is world leading or considered as being of international importance or recognised internationally (REF 2014). This ensures that curricula is at the leading edge of developments in the field and that you will study alongside leading experts. The EU-funded InTraDE project has helped to improve the efficiency of port and terminal operations, developing specialist automation and new techniques for optimising container movements. Projects in logistics supply chain studies, such as the EU funded WEastflows project, have optimised transport networks to reduce energy and emissions and improve resilience to external uncertainties. LOOM works collaboratively with industry and regulatory organisations, including Maersk Line, Peel Group, Shell, ABS Group, UK Health and Safety Executive and Maritime and Coast Guard Agency. It also has close links with international research partners, such as World Maritime University, Lille University of Technology, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Incheon University, Manchester University, University of Antwerp, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Wuhan University of Technology, and Beijing Jiaotong University.
