SPRING Spring Class Schedule February 7, through June 6, Online Classes Next Step Distance education comprises the fastest growing educational delivery mode in California community colleges. The mission of the Distance Education program at Southwest College is to promote student access and student success by integrating some of the programs and services using technology mediated instruction and to develop and promote effective distance learning paradigms. Distance Education provides you with the convenience of attending classes in a virtual world without the limitations of time and travel. Please visit our Web site at www.lasc.edu, click on the for students link and then click the Online Classes link. There you ll find a wealth of information on the Distance Education program here at Los Angeles Southwest College and it will help you decide if Distance Education and online classes are right for you. When you re ready to enroll in an online class, just visit our Online Classes Web site at http://online.lasc.edu. What do you need to take an online class? 1. You MUST have an active e-mail account. Regular and proficient use of e-mail and the Internet should prove helpful when taking online classes. 2. You must have a reliable computer. Our online classes are generally based on using PCs, but some courses can accommodate the use of MACs. If you have a question, ask your instructor via e-mail. 3. You must have a reliable Internet connection. Dial-up connection will work for some classes, but it is recommended that you have DSL or cable connections. What to do if you have signed up for an online class? 1. You must have a working e-mail address in order to take an online class. Verify that your e-mail address works. Make sure your e-mail address is on your application when you go to the Admissions Office. If not, submit your e-mail address to the Admissions Office, either in person, by phone or online. If you re not sure how to do this, call the Admissions Office. 2. To sign up for an online class means you must do BOTH of the following: a. RESISTER for the class via the admissions process. To register for an online class, go to the Admission office and complete the application process or follow the ONLINE REGISTRATION instructions in this Schedule of Classes. In either case, make sure you enter your valid e-mail wherever it s requested. AND b. ENROLL yourself in the class using Moodle (the online course management system). To enroll yourself in the class, first, you must create a Moodle profile (if this is your first online class-go to http://online.lasc.edu); next, you MUST get the Enrollment Key for your class. You can get the enrollment key by contacting your instructor or attending Orientation session for your class. Instructor contact information and orientation session dates are printed in this Schedule of Classes you ll find it just below the online class you signed up for. Note that this is a 2-part process and do not attempt Part B until you have completed Part A. 3. While it is not mandatory, attendance at the Orientation session is highly advisable. If possible, plan to attend the Orientation session. At the Orientation session, your instructor will be there to give you valuable information about your class and will instruct you in how to navigate the online class Website. If you are unable to attend, e-mail your instructor letting them know you were unable to attend. Include in your e-mail address, your full name, the course and section numbers in all correspondences to your instructor.
