PRODUCT ENHANCEMENT BULLETIN May 9, 2007 To: Re: Valued Aspen Customers, Sales Reps, and Employees Low Leak Cabinets Affected products: All Aspen Cased Evaporator Coils and Air Handlers Recently, a variety of municipalities have begun to discuss and, in some cases implement, low leak requirements into their building codes. California, for instance, is considering making a low leak requirement part of their 2008 building code. 1 In response to this requirement, Aspen is redesigning the standard for its coil and air handler cabinets. Also, when less than 2% low leakage is required, Aspen will offer an option to cover this for a nominal extra charge. Both these changes, the design upgrade on standard product and the introduction of the < 2% option, will be effective 7/1/07. The changes to the standard design will include 1) rubber grommets around the openings in the cabinet where the liquid and suction lines exit the cabinet (see fig.), and 2) a seal around the openings where the condensate drains exit the cabinet (see fig.). The low leak option will incorporate these changes but will also include gasket material around all edges of the access door (see access door seal in fig.) Please contact Randy Kellum (x104) or Ray Patil (x115) with any questions or comments. 1 For details, please refer to <http://www.energy.ca.gov/title24/2008standards/documents/2007-02-26-27_workshop/language/subchapter9_152_rev9_strikethrough.pdf> Page 1

TECHNICAL BULLETIN THERMAL EXPANSION VALVES Aspen Manufacturing has significantly consolidated the number of expansion valves used in manufacturing coil and air handlers from sixteen a year ago to only six today. These six TXV s can all be used in both heat pump and cooling only applications. Additionally, all of these new valves have wide operating ranges. Whereas most of those previously used did not, i.e. they can cover more tonnage capacities. The following chart demonstrates the versatility of the new valve line-up. It also gives the ordering nomenclature for C series coils, B series coils and air handlers. For reference, the valves previously used are also shown. When mix/matching is necessary in order to achieve desired Mbtuh capacities or SEER efficiency ratings in the mid 3 to 4 ton range, it may be necessary to go beyond the nomenclature shown. For example, if a four ton air handler or B coil is to be used with a three ton R-410A condensing unit it will be necessary to include +X5-3 not merely +X5 in the model number ordered. For C series coils this will need to be handled in the option code. The previously used valves are not obsolete. Expansion valves that are in a distributor or contractor s stock for field usage can still be used for the original purpose for which they were purchased. We cannot accept return of these valves for credit.
