Learners t be encuraged t research and describe the Data Prtectin Act as it applies t shared data. They will need t lk at an rganisatin and lk at the flw f cmmunicatin, hw it flws in and ut f an rganisatin i.e. hw is the infrmatin prvided t all the users in the rganisatin (email, ntice bards, meetings, blgs, virtual envirnments, lgs, website, etc, des it always wrk? What are the cnstraints such as security, speed?). They shuld be encuraged t explre cmmunicatin methds reprting and sharing their findings with the grup and discussing the benefits and risks. Knw the features and services f lcal and wide area netwrk technlgies Learners t be intrduced t the different tplgies f netwrking. Learners shuld be encuraged t create wall displays, psters r leaflets abut the tplgies, their uses and visual representatins f them. Learners t lk at the different types f netwrks as in peer t peer and client server, making this as practical as pssible and invlving the identificatin f the netwrking cmpnents will add t the mtivatin and interest and will help with an understanding f hw the netwrk hardware cmpnents are cnnected. They will need t investigate the different uses f the different netwrks and their suitability fr different users. Learners will need t lk at addressing and hw this is incrprated int the netwrk, they culd be given a netwrk in which they need t either find IP and MAC addresses r t put the IP addresses nt the machines and find the MAC addresses f the cmputers. This wuld als encurage the use f utility sftware t find the addresses. Learners t research the different services and prtcls that relate t lcal and wide area netwrks. The internet which culd be cnsidered as a WAN can be easily used t research the advantages and disadvantages f the services and prtcls with the WANs and LANs. These findings culd frm the basis f a grup discussin. Understand hw netwrk hardware and sftware cmpnents are cnnected Be able t set up a simple lcal area netwrk Learners are t be encuraged t handle and use the range f netwrk cmpnents safely. This shuld be delivered where pssible as a practical activity giving the learners detailed instructins in cnnecting the hardware cmpnents tgether, installatin f netwrk cards, and physically creating peer t peer and client server netwrks. This means that the learners will have t pay careful cnsideratin t the planning f the installatin f the hardware and sftware, and will need t cnsider any health and safety issues. Wrking in small grups in a wrkshp envirnment is t be encuraged. The learners will need t knw hw t test their installatins in terms f functinality, and as a practical activity culd be presented with netwrks cntaining faults and culd create checklists and then check the functinality f the netwrk t becme familiar with the types f tests and the testing prcess. In additin t the practical envirnment there are a variety f simulatin packages such as packet tracer that will supprt the learning f cnnecting, using and testing and learners shuld als be given experience f these where pssible. The learners shuld investigate the different types f netwrk security such as firewalls, access rights t flders, files, etc, passwrds, usernames, access cntrl. As a grup r individually they shuld identify the level f security which is apprpriate t netwrks such as small lcal LANs large rganisatinal LANs, WANs, wireless netwrks. Presentatins culd be made t the larger grup and any cnflicts r misunderstandings discussed and crrected. The learners shuld have the pprtunity t set up security n practice netwrks and t create the implementatin test plans that include testing user access and permissins t web sites, access t netwrk drives and individual flders, files and sftware. www.cr.rg.uk 6
