PLAY TO WIN Four reasons you ll want to play blackjack When you go to a casino to gamble you have many choices. There are a multitude of slots and video poker machines, and numerous table games on the casino floor that you could play. Then there is, of course, blackjack. Historically, blackjack has been around for a long time. In fact, it remains the most popular table game amongst casino players. There is a reason for this and if you don t know why blackjack is so popular, you will by the time you finish reading this article. What makes blackjack so special? Here are some reasons why. You can reduce the casino s edge significantly from 2 to 5 percent to about 0.5 percent by learning the basic playing strategy. You can often gain the monetary advantage (or at the minimum, play even with the casino) when you play by utilizing the basic playing strategy and then asking and getting casino comps. You can also gain the mathematical edge over the casino by knowing when to bet more and when to bet less. And, you can gain the edge by playing better than your opponents play in blackjack tournaments. Your goal when you gamble is to firstly have fun, and secondly to win money. Blackjack is one of the few casino games that allow you to accomplish these objectives. There is no way you can reduce the casino s edge in blackjack Winning Ways By Dr. Henry Tamburin unless you learn the basic playing strategy. It doesn t take long to learn the basic strategy, and once you learn it, you ll be able to use it for as long as you play blackjack. If all else fails, you can always bring a blackjack strategy card with you when you play so you ll always make the right play. The cards are casino legal. (I recommend the strategy cards developed by Kenneth Smith. For information, visit my web store at www. smartgaming.com). Not all blackjack players take advantage of comps, and that s very unfortunate. Why? Because asking and receiving comps can often give you the monetary edge over the casino, and that s without learning anything more than the basic playing strategy. This works because the casino assumes about a 1 to 2 percent edge over the masses of players who play blackjack. However, the smart basic strategy player only faces a 0.5 percent (or less) house edge. This difference often results in the basic strategy player getting back monetarily more comps than the casino thinks they will win from the player. Thirdly, it s possible to get the mathematical edge over the casino when you play blackjack by betting more when you have the edge on the next hand. How do you know when this happens? You must learn how to count the cards. Nowadays See Tamburin, Page page 25 11 Half tables, don t players all part of game of craps F r o m Rose: I played craps where they have $1 craps. They play with a regulation table when they have enough players but place a flat divider board in the middle of the table when there are only a couple of people playing. Have you ever played on a table like this and where would be the best spot to roll from? Frank Responds: If you are a random roller, it doesn t matter where you shoot from. If you are a controlled shooter stand as close to that center divide as possible. In fact, a really talented controlled shooter could probably stand at just about any position and do really well at such a table. In my almost quarter century of playing I have never been at such a table, which is my loss. From George: Regarding your column about the person who would not play don ts, a few words: A few months ago while playing at a Biloxi casino, it got so bad that all four of us were playing the don t only. Even when we had the dice! Everybody was going three to four rolls then out. Some people walked up and started playing the Pass Line. They kept losing and griping. One of the four said if shooters are playing don t on themselves that should tell you something. They got angry and told us that we didn t know how to play. And they left. There is no telling about some people. This is the silliest thing I have seen in my short craps career. Don t they know players can play By Frank Scoblete both sides of the table? I enjoy all your columns and have read some of your books. Hope you find this funny. I swear this is true. I play in Biloxi or Tunica four to six times a year. Frank Responds: Don t players are disliked by the majority of right players. This has been so ever since I can remember. But one important thing I have learned in my quarter century of gambling: Never give someone advice. I even take this further. I don t give advice even if a person asks me for advice. What if the person loses even if you have given the right advice? Just not worth the hassle. I tell people who ask me for advice to ask the dealer. Of course, I don t tell them that I am a professional at giving advice in my columns and books. That s usually the only time I open my big mouth, when I m writing. Oh, and I hope you guys ultimately won some money. Frankly Speaking Frank Scoblete s new books are I Am a Dice Controller: Inside the World of Advantage-Play Craps! and I Am a Card Counter: Inside the World of Advantage-Play Blackjack! Books are available from Amazon.com, Kindle or at your favorite bookstore. PS. Here s a free deal for our readers: a free copy of either of my books Confessions of a Wayward Catholic or The Virgin Kiss (while supplies last). Just send me your address by dropping me a note at Frank Scoblete, PO Box 446, Malverne, NY 11565 or emailing me at fscobe@optonline.net. You can also email me at Facebook. 10 JACKPOT! Tamburin, from Page 10 8 there are several very easy to learn card counting systems geared to recreational players. (For example, Speed Count, which is explained in the Golden Touch Blackjack. Visit goldentouchblackjack.com) There is also another way that smart blackjack players can gain the edge play in blackjack tournaments. In tournaments, your primary adversary is not the casino; it s the other tournament players. Whether you win or lose your bets against the casino is not what is important. What matters is whether you win more chips (or lose less) than your opponents. By being more skillful in tournament play than your fellow table players are, you can gain the edge over them. The best book on Blackjack Tournament strategy is by tournament pro Kenneth Smith, How to Win More Blackjack Tournaments Vol.1, and 2, available at bjinsider.com. There you have it. Four reasons to play blackjack. I ll even throw in a fifth reason: Winning more often on your casino visits, which you will do if my follow my advice and play blackjack, rather than consistently coming home from with nada in your pockets. You can take that tip to the bank. Henry Tamburin is a blackjack and video poker expert. HEARD IT ON THE RIVER by Rudi Schiffer There is an ongoing event at FITZ CASINO & HOTEL that has finally gotten my attention and when I checked into it I found out it has been running without a break since March 2010. Ladies Night Out is a real favorite here because it offers a neat package for Thursday evenings, said RICK CASAGRANDE, director of marketing. It has a loyal following, but the word spreads and attendance continues strong. Check-in is at the group sales desk beginning at 4 p.m. for Key Rewards members for the Viva la Diva slot tournament. This is for ladies who have earned 25 points of slot play prior to that - the event is free. Players receive a free buffet and drink, a free drawing entry and a free gift. The tournament winner gets $500 in free slot play; second place pays $150, with additional free play prizes through 50 places. Guys are also invited to participate in the evening. The event is probably the longest continuing promotion in Tunica for a lot of reasons. The deadline looms for SOUTHLAND PARK GAMING AND RACING s 100,000 Cans of Care community drive to raise 100,000 cans of food for the MID-SOUTH FOOD BANK. It will benefit the organization s FOOD FOR KIDS and MOBILE PAN- TRY programs. Donors of two cans or more receive $1 in free play and there is no limit. Companies or organizations that raise 1,000 cans are entered into a drawing for a catered dinner at Southland for employers, families and friends. Companies can get details by contacting BOBBI JONES at (870) 735-3670, ext. 8384, or at bjones@ delawarenorth.com. Also at Southland, don t forget the Payday Driveaway Giveaway coming up on Sunday, Nov. 15. You could drive away in a new Ford Mustang. STEVE DITCHKUS returns to Tunica as the new GM at Fitz. A 28-year gaming executive brings experience from leadership positions in Nevada, Missouri, Louisiana and Wisconsin and from Harrah s in Tunica from 2001-2004. See the full story in this issue. Another Tunica alumnus is WILLIAM JOHNSON, who has been appointed as interim president and CEO at PEARL RIVER RESORT, where the MISSISSIPPI BAND OF CHOCTAWS operate GOLDEN MOON HOTEL & CASINO and SILVER STAR HOTEL & CASINO. His time in Tunica was as director of table games at Gold Strike. Speaking of Pearl River Resort: The resort is the first in the state to get the BRITNEY SPEARS Slot Game. RANDALL P. didn t have to wait on Britney to say hit me baby. He hit a big jackpot worth $100,000 at Pearl River Resort on Oct. 12. He was playing a $25 Triple Butterfly Sevens machine. Yep, the math is correct. A 4,000 credits top jackpot equals $100,000. He was playing two credits a spin to qualify. Good thing he hit! SAM S TOWN HOTEL & GAMBLING HALL is hosting the Winnervision TV Giveaway in November. Sam s Town will be giving away 60 TVs. Play at Sam s Town for your chance to win a 55- inch flat screen TV. Drawings take place every Saturday in November at 7, 9 and 11 p.m. Five lucky winners at each drawing will take home a TV. HOLLYWOOD CASINO hosts the $100,000 Big Draw on Saturdays. Win up to $100,000 in drawings every hour from 6 to 11 p.m. Earn 150 points each Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. for your lucky Big Draw numbers. Show your team spirit at RESORTS CASINO and come away a winner in the $64,000 Tailgate to Touchdowns promotion on Fridays and Saturdays in November. Drawings are from 6 p.m. to midnight. There will be 25 winners of $200 in free slot play from 6 to 10 p.m., one winner of $1,000 free slot play at 11 p.m. and two winners of $1,000 free slot play at midnight. New Fitz Casino GM tuned to good guest service by Rudi Schiffer TUNICA RESORTS Steve Ditchkus is a 28-year gaming industry professional with leadership experience at a wide variety of casinos in Nevada, Missouri, Louisiana and Wisconsin. And now he has returned to Tunica, where he previously worked for Harrah s from 2001 to 2004. Much has changed in the interim, but some things never change. It s a smaller market now, but in the few months I have been on board, I see a higher level of competition than existed before, he said. However, in this industry some things hold true and today solid customer service is still the linchpin supported by consistent and smarter marketing. Visitors are more selective and very tuned in to how they are treated. Taking care of our guests is a priority in retaining them and in attracting new ones, he said. We strive to be the best. A native of New Jersey, he began his career in Lake Tahoe in 1988, gaining in-depth experience in all areas of casino operations as he moved forward. The great Green Bay coach Vince Lombardi stressed that pro football was all about blocking and tackling, a very simple approach, and casino service is much the same... take care of basics and the rest will fall in place, said Ditchkus. Ditchkus plans no immediate dramatic changes to the Fitz operation, but will stress some obvious advantages, like being a local casino favored by guests who like the intimate gaming floor with very friendly dealers and service staff. Like any casino, slots are the main attraction and he points out why the Fitz is so popular we have one the lowest slot holds in the area, which means more winners and more time on the device. With the road to Tunica paved with casinos and more coming, where does he see the market in the near future? Tunica s casinos need to maintain a smart out-of-market presence and work harder on the guests who travel here. Emphasizing the attractions here is important to expose the large number of things to see and do when not gambling, he pointed out. For instance, he said, Fitz sits atop a levee with a great view of the Mississippi River the only casino with such a view. And it is within walking distance to the Tunica River Park and Museum. Nearby attractions include the Gateway to the Blues Museum and Visitor Center, year-round golf and tennis, a high level of entertainment acts, Delta dining, and nearby Memphis, with Graceland, the new huge Bass Pro Shop in the Pyramid, the NBA Grizzlies, Beale Street and more. Now residing in Hernando, he and wife Kristin have two girls, Alexis, 18, and Katie, 14. Battle of Bras at Horseshoe Tunica Thursday, Oct. 29 TUNICA RESORTS Caesars Entertainment hosts the Fourth Annual Battle of the Bras to benefit the American Cancer Society at Horseshoe Tunica this Thursday, Oct. 29. For this event, Caesars Mid-South male executives, along with Memphis-area male celebrities and executives, will model bras decorated by employees from Horseshoe Tunica, Tunica Roadhouse, and other Memphis-area businesses at the Horseshoe Tunica show. The show is part of an effort to raise funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society. The event costs $10 and tickets may be purchased on Ticketmaster.com with proceeds from the event benefitting the American Cancer Society. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with heavy hors d oeuvres provided by Horseshoe Tunica. The celebrities showcasing their support for the American Cancer Society and the fourth annual Battle of the Bras include prominent Memphis business executives and media personalities. We are thrilled to once again host Battle of the Bras, which Steve Ditchkus over the past four years has allowed us to raise and donate over $200,000 to the American Cancer Society, said R. Scott Barber, regional president, Caesars Mid-South. Teams of five or more of Caesars Mid-South employees as well as teams from other local businesses decorated the bras in a way that tells a story related to breast cancer. The bras were displayed at Caesars properties and collected votes and cash donations from patrons. Male casino executives and local celebrities will model the top 10 bras that received the most cash donations. Celebrity judges will make the final decision on the top three bra designs. All money raised will benefit the American Cancer Society, with the Caesars Foundation matching up to $25,000. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. and consist of a cash bar and heavy hors d oeuvres sponsored by Horseshoe Tunica; a parade of breast cancer survivors employed by Caesars Mid-South; a live auction and finally, the bra modeling and voting for the main event. 16 JACKPOT! Southland s drive to feed the need nears deadline by Rudi Schiffer WEST MEMPHIS In a region not known for counting calories, there are thousands of undernourished children who have no dependable access to food. An ambitious drive to help change this is nearing its final push to meet a Nov. 7 deadline. The goal of this important drive is to raise 100,000 cans of food. Here is how it works: Player Reward members will receive $1 in free play for every two cans of food they bring to donate. There is no limit to what you can bring. Cans must be at least 10 ounces and cannot be dented or expired. Southland Park Gaming & Racing is collecting cans to help the Mid-South Food Bank with a goal of 100,000 cans. The community program sponsored by Southland Park in West Memphis will benefit the mission of the Mid-South Food Bank and its Food For Kids and Mobile Pantry programs. It s a reach to come up with 100,000 cans donated, but whatever we achieve will be a big help for the program, said Bobbi Jones, senior director of marketing at Southland Park Gaming & Racing. Time is short to meet the deadline, so we appreciate any support to meet the goal. The drive helps celebrate the 100th anniversary of parent company, Delaware North, founded in Buffalo, New York, by the Jacobs family in 1915 to sell concessions at ballparks. It is a business that now encompasses the globe. While donations are piling in from individuals, a challenge with rewards has been issued by Southland Park Gaming & Racing to area businesses. Companies or organizations that donate 1,000 cans or more will be entered into a drawing for a catered dinner event for up to 100 employees, friends and family. The leading donor will also be awarded a trophy and public recognition through Southland s media, reaching more than 150,000 people. For details or donations, contact Bobbi Jones at (870) 735-3670, ext. 8384, or at bjones@delawarenorth.com. The mission of the Mid-South Food Bank is to bring the food-insecure population from hunger to health through collaborative partnerships and the effective distribution of nutritious food in our communities. Tracy Lawrence to perform at Sam s Town Tracy Lawrence TUNICA RESORTS See Tracy Lawrence live at Sam s Town Hotel and Gambling Hall s River Palace Entertainment Center on Friday, Nov. 27, at 9 p.m. Tickets start at $20. Lawrence is one of the most recognizable voices in country music with songs such as Paint Me A Birmingham, Time Marches On, Alibis, and Find Out Who Your Friends Are. The entertainer has enjoyed 22 songs on the Billboard Top 10 charts with 18 number one singles, selling over 13 million albums. The Multi-platinum CMA and ACM award winning recording artist has helped shape the sound of country music for two decades, recently celebrating 22 years in music. Few country artists have ever known the kind of success that Lawrence has earned and the influence his iconic voice has contributed to the country music genre. His music has inspired a whole new generation of entertainers and fans. Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan frequently pay tribute to the singer live in concert by playing his double-platinum hits like Time Marches On and Alibis. Songs that help make Lawrence among one of the most-played artists on radio. Lawrence has set out to embark on the next chapter of his music career with his recent studio album Headlights, Taillights And Radios. The first single, Stop Drop And Roll, was written by hit songwriters Casey Beathard, who penned Lawrence s CMA and ACM award winning hit Find Out Who Your Friends Are, and Brandon Kinney. It marked the singer s first studio album in five years. The album is not just another release for Lawrence; it s a testament to how his music continues to evolve and engage all generations of country music fans. The 11-song collection features some of his most progressive music to date. Reflecting on the creative process when recording Headlights, Taillights And Radios, Lawrence knew that he needed to push the envelope and creativity to a new level. When recording the new album it was a very different process than I had ever done before, said Lawrence. We ended up recording the album in two parts, that s just how it worked out. I started recording in the direction to make a more traditional county record. But as time progressed, I needed to explore and challenge myself musically. I wanted to go deeper and try a more edgy and progressive sound that reflected where I was going next. The album title Headlights, Taillights And Radios carries a signature meaning for the artist. One Wild Night with Lee Ann Womack at Fitz TUNICA RESORTS Enjoy One Wild Night with Lee Ann Womack, with special guests Parmalee, at Fitz Casino & Hotel on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 8 p.m. In a world of faster, harder, louder, Lee Ann Womack wants something far more radical: to be real. It just seems like music when it is most powerful hits you right between the eyes, says the Grammy-winning vocalist, talking about the album The Way I m Livin. Some of these songs are hard truths, tough moments, places you d rather not be, but you know, life takes you to those places sometimes. The Way I m Livin is an unvarnished collection of songs by some of America s most progressive songwriter/artists. Whether the vintage country of Hayes Carll s Chances Are, the scalding gospel Lee Ann Womack of Mindy Smith s All the Saints or the tortured linger of love in Buddy Miller s Don t Listen To The Wind, the emotions and performances are wide open and intimate. I ve never made a record like this, says Womack, whose Call Me Crazy, I Hope You Dance and the 2005 Country Music Association Album of the Year There s More Where That Came From are among modern country s most acclaimed albums. We only cut songs that spoke to me. I didn t think about anything else... Tickets are $35 general admission/$45 reserved/$65 VIP (first six rows). Hotel packages available for $209, includes deluxe room and two reserved concert tickets. Room code is CPCALLIN. By Paul Wade HOROSCOPE It s time to take stock of the last 12 months, Scorpio Editor s Note: Horoscopes are meant for entertainment purposes only and are for the time period October 29 - November 11, 2015. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) This period of time is the ideal point to consider the finer points of the year and review the triumphs and tragedies of the past 12 months. There have been a few disappointments. Ask yourself whether it is worth trying to improve things or just let matters lie. Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) The planets are an auspicious omen for those attempting to advance their career interests. You will still need to motivate yourself and ensure just the right combination of dynamism and diplomacy. While this sense of conflict diminishes, you d rather focus more on personal affairs than on work. Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) This is great time for a vacation. You don t have to go far either, although it would be wonderful to visit some distant locatio. You re feeling that you cannot take your eye off the ball for a moment. Still, there is always the possibility of a day out and about. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You are being pressured to conform. This is nothing new; if there is one trait that has become a familiar theme, the urge to embrace your individuality despite widespread opposition, has been a constant. You re position of some uncertainty that makes it hard standing up for your principles. Pisces (Feb. 19-March 19) You have a well-deserved reputation as the most sensitive person in the zodiac. It is not a sign of weakness to rely emotionally on those you care for, just like they depend on you. Cutting yourself off from a range of human contact would see you deaden the atmosphere with a less hopeful outlook. Aries (March 20-April 19) Over the past few years all that you want from life has changed substantially. Some of what you d hoped for has panned out, while the remainder has required additional attention. This week is ideally suited to give attention to areas requiring it. Taurus (April 20-May 20) You are immune to this period s harsher trends. One exception is your closest relationship. Things are not what they used to be. However, romance in the air, along with a greater commitment. Gemini (May 21-June 20) A focus builds at the base of your horoscope, affecting your domestic interests, home life and family affairs. Your prospects are both favorable and encouraging, with the prevailing atmosphere a welcome change from the discord that has often characterized proceedings. Cancer (June 21-July 22) Family matters and partnership concerns dominate proceedings. You can t keep everybody happy. It s important that your own needs receive the same attention as those you care about. Close relationships prove complicated and so are work relations. It is important when you are dealing with a straightforward business transaction to keep personal predilections out of the picture. Leo (July 23-Aug. 22) A trio of planets in your money sector helps you maximise your income. You should see enough cash flowing your way to provide for a few important luxuries. The planets put luck on your side when you are ready to make the most of all opportunities. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) The alignment of the planets bodes well for your affairs. This is a period of good fortune for all of your relationships, especially when you can seize the initiative. Though usually you are not keen to push yourself forward, take a proactive stance. Libra (Sep. 23-Oct. 22) If you re shrugging your shoulders and reckon little has changed in your private life over recent years, the chances are that you re repressing more than is good for you. Occasionally you need to rethink your attitude towards the others in your life. Paul Wade, a UK-based astrologer, is published in seven languages.
