TRANSFER CURRICULUM GUIDE Long Beach City College ============================================================================================ PSYCHOLOGY CAREER INFORMATION Psychology is a study in human behavior. Psychologists study and diagnose problems and emotional or mental disorders. Some may set up laboratory tests, while others are involved in counseling. A doctoral degree is usually required for employment as a licensed clinical or counseling child psychologist. Those with a Ph.D. qualify for a wide range of teaching, research, clinical and counseling positions in universities, elementary and secondary schools, private industry and government. Those with a master s degree in psychology often work as school psychologists, psychological assistants, and conduct research or psychological evaluations. A bachelor s degree in psychology qualifies a person to assist psychologists in community mental health centers, and correctional programs. All states require psychologists to have a license. The Occupational Outlook Handbook reports a starting salary for Psychologists holding a bachelor s degree to be $19,500; while those with a master s degree could earn a yearly salary of $29,600; and a Ph.D. degree could earn $35,800. It is possible to earn more in private practice. GENERAL INFORMATION Not all universities with this major are listed below. The lower division core preparation is listed for universities with which LBCC has established articulation agreements. The first course listed is the LBCC course; the course in parentheses immediately after is the university equivalent. It is generally recommended to take as many lower-division major courses as possible prior to transfer. Please check www.assist.org for the most current articulation information and information regarding minimum grade for each course, impacted major recommendations, application procedures, etc. Moreover, you must see a counselor to develop an accurate educational plan to ensure your competitiveness for admissions for your school(s) of choice. To thoroughly understand admissions and general education requirements please check the catalog of the transfer university.
