I decided to study graphic design seriously after I graduated from high school. I have been studying at Yoobee for nearly 2 years and I m really loving it! Everyday I look at my design work and think how I can improve it, and make people like it more. Tim was one of the 17 students being selected to be featured in the Creative & Technical: Thai students and New Zealand Exhibition in Bangkok as part of the New Zealand Prime Minister mission to Thailand in 2013. Some of this work is featured here. This was an exciting opportunity for me to showcase my passion in design in my country. In most of my work I try to combine fashion, art and movement together. I like to use texture and brushes to make movement in my work. In this work I tried to make an illusion combined with fashion. 4 5

CELEBRATING STUDENT SUCCESS WHERE HAVE OUR GRADS GONE? MANUEL PAYAN Diploma in Video Post Production (now Digital Filmmaking) graduate Manuel Payan is now a senior graphic designer at advertising company Interbrand DDB Group, where he creates graphic executions for brands. The practical skills I gained at Yoobee are a constant in my everyday workload, particularly those in graphic design and after-effects. Another key learning was time and workflow management. These are extremely important for the successful completion of any project. The typical Yoobee graduate has a hyperactive mind, making them both ambitious and productive. They re known for great execution, delivering high-quality product with an eye for detail. My tutor was the most imaginative and over-productive artist I ve ever had the pleasure of working with. Every project run by her was an absolute blast. It s a fantastic start-up that gives to children in need in NZ. For every piece of stationery you buy, FRANK will give the same item to a child living in poverty. All the technical skills I learnt at Yoobee have been great and have enhanced our business, but the most valuable thing I took away from my time at Yoobee was work ethic. Be diligent, be on time, and stick to deadlines. Plan and make room for your creativity. It s about letting boundaries and deadlines enhance you creativity, not stunt it. My tutor at Yoobee was great. Accessible, easy to talk to and always willing to give me more time. Yoobee classes are small so you get to know all the other students around you too. My advice is, if you are going to be a designer, be a good one. Work hard and take the opportunities to learn. You can make the decision to be average or exceptional. Take the feedback, good or bad, and learn from it. You can support Jess and NZ children in need at www.frankstationery.com 32 33
