Science Pre-University Name of Speaker: Claire McQuade (Co-Ordinator) This course was set up with the idea of giving students the opportunity to study all three science subjects Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Many leaving cert students would have 2 science subjects but lack the third. They also study lab skills and mathematics. This will give them a clear advantage on entering college. The extra year link between university and school defines the student s interest in science and enables them to complete tasks successfully within a confined time period and to a high standard. Architectural Design and Technology Name of Speaker: Berni Walsh (Course Co-Ordinator) An Architect plans, designs, and oversees the construction of buildings that have human occupancy or use as their main purpose. Their work can also involve preparing feasibilities studies, planning, conservation and renovation. They need understanding of many different areas including law, spatial planning, aesthetics, construction materials and methods, services, building regulations, management, finance and history. Historically most architectural design and construction was carried out by artisans such as stone masons, carpenters, or master builders. Today only qualified people with appropriate qualifications and registration may legally practice architecture. Technical knowledge is as important as design. The architectural Technologist provides information on the technical design solutions and is trained in building construction methods and technology. They typically concentrate on the technology of building, design and construction. They can also be involved in the project management working with contractors on site.
