Pyramid Approach to Education The Pyramid Approach to Education is a unique teaching method that establishes highly effective learning environments for children and adults with autism or related developmental disabilities and/or other learning impairments. Created by Dr. Andy Bondy, the Pyramid Approach utilizes a broad spectrum of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) principles, while encouraging creativity and innovation on the teacher s part. It provides an invaluable foundation for educators and parents who want to provide the best possible environments for successful learning in the home, school or community. The Pyramid Approach to Education will provide staff, parents and caregivers with all the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to establish successful special education instructional programs. The Science of Behaviour What to Teach: Functional Objectives and Activities Powerful Reinforcement Systems Functional Communication & Social Skills Identification and Replacement of Contextually Inappropriate Behaviours The Pyramid Approach to Education emphasizes how to teach, rather than simply what to teach. Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS ) PECS is a language training package that is used to teach communication skills rapidly to those with limited functional speech. PECS promotes communication within a social context, without lengthy prerequisite training or expensive materials. Training in PECS begins by teaching spontaneous requesting, and goes on to teach additional communicative functions such as responding to questions and commenting. Based on a study conducted at the Delaware Autism Program, 76% of children using PECS acquired speech as either their primary means of communication or as augmented by a picture based system. PECS is also used successfully by many students who have developed speech, but who are not using it functionally. Generalisation Designing Effective Lessons Error Correction Strategies Evidence Based Teaching Strategies Collecting and Analysing Data The PECS protocol and teaching strategies have been scientifically validated within the field of applied behaviour analysis. According to pediatric guidelines regarding autism interventions published in PEDIATRICS: The Official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, individuals with autism who have limited verbal language, or those who do not respond to multiple interventions aimed at improving communication, should be offered the opportunity to use PECS. Further, a Technical Expert Panel consisting of practitioners, researchers and parents concluded that PECS is one of only a handful of interventions that have shown efficacy in the treatment of autism (Maglione, Gans, Das, Timbie, Kasari and HRSA Autism Intervention Research, 2012). 2 Subscribe to Pyramid s official YouTube channel, PECSGlobal!
