ROYAL COLLEGE OF ART JOB DESCRIPTION Post: Programme: Senior Tutor Service Design Grade: 10 Responsible to: Head of Programme (HoP) Background: The Royal College of Art is the world s most influential institution of university status devoted to the study of art, design, humanities and communication and has an international reputation for excellence in teaching, practice and research. The College has some 1,600 students following postgraduate courses and the staff, both full-time and part-time, totals over 400. The College has a long history of achievement in art and design education, numerous eminent graduates and a remarkable record of graduate employment. The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) recognises the specialist institution status of the College and excellence in teaching and research has also been acknowledged in all recent government reviews. The School of Design currently has approximately 400 students and 80 members of staff. It has six academic programmes: Vehicle Design, Design Products, Innovation Design Engineering, Design Interactions and Service Design and GID an international Programme in Japan and USA. About the Programme: The Service Design programme offers a two-year Masters MA (RCA) as well as growing research activities including MPhil / PhD programmes. The Masters programme is delivered in association with Imperial College London and takes a diverse range of applicants (engineers, technologists, designers, commercially experienced people and from many other disciplines) and introduces them to creative design projects, team working and innovation processes. The programme is founded on a wide spectrum of principles to enable graduates to build their own approach to service design with confidence and purpose. Purpose of the post: Reporting directly to the Head of Programme, you will contribute to the teaching programme and be responsible for the implementation,

development and day-to-day management of a significant aspect of the Programme. This will involve initiating elements of the course through curriculum development, the pastoral care of students, managing visiting staff, co-ordinating related external projects and promoting the Programme through exhibition and through liaison with other institutions and industry. As Senior Tutor, you will be expected to promote the study of your subject by practice, teaching and research. The course currently has a growing yearly intake and international projects with commercial clients. The Programme also is active in exhibitions, publications and other related outward facing activities therefore you will require a solid record in project management and team skills to support these activities. Main Duties and Responsibilities: Work with the Head of Programme to design and deliver the MA Service design programme and lead the delivery its delivery to the second year Service Design cohort. This will involve: - Working with the Head of Programme to design the overall Service Design curriculum; - Initiating and then creating new elements of the formal taught and studio practice curriculum; - Designing and delivering specific teaching inputs as required for the programmes (modules, tutorials, seminars, reviews and other inputs); - Coaching and Mentoring students as well as acting as personal tutor and providing monitoring information as required by college regulations; - Providing feedback and other monitoring information on the students progress; contributing if required to the examination or assessment procedures; - Managing the overall studio for both first and second years; - Identifying and managing visiting lecturers to support the programme delivery and master-classes; - Setting up and managing industry collaborations; - Delivering Executive Education to industry and public sector partners - Generating fee income from industry partners for sponsored projects and short courses; - Managing the delivery of PEP (Post Experience Programme) Students; Lead on work connected with the College, School or Programme exhibitions and contributing to a motivating creative environment for all students; Take part in the Research Entrance, Interim and Final examinations and to chair when delegated by the Head of Programme; Act as a research supervisor to selected students as appropriate. Organise the Research Entrance, Interim and Final examinations;

Contribute to the annual Programme monitoring procedures; Continue your own research which aligns to the RCA s Research Strategy and its Research Hubs; Promote the School and its students through publication and through liaison with other institutions, relevant professions and industry, both nationally and internationally. In addition the Senior Tutor will be expected to support the HoP in the following: Leading the staff team and direct and manage all the activities of the Programme within the resources available; Communicating and representing the interests of the Programme within the School and the College as a whole; Exploring and exploit the possibilities for collaboration with other Programmes in and beyond the School; Any other duties as reasonably required by the Head of Programme. Research and Knowledge Exchange The post holder is expected to be research active: whether by conventional academic research or practice-led and/or applied research to a standard whereby their research outputs can be submitted to future REF exercises at a minimum of 3* quality levels (as per REF2014). The post holder is required to develop research and KE grant applications, as well as industry funded research in areas of their research expertise, as well as in new areas to foster cross-disciplinary research, in collaboration with the Service Design team, and the School Research Leader. Assist the HoP, School Research Leader, and the Service Design Research Co-ordinator to create the Service Design Research Strategic Plan each academic year in line with the academic philosophy and vision for the Programme. A Senior Tutor must fulfil the following criteria: Significant contribution to research and/or knowledge exchange, either through practice, applied service design, exhibitions, publications or equivalent peer reviewed outputs, including through impacts from research and the application of knowledge and/or advancement of learning in his or her specialist discipline. Significant contribution as an effective teacher of postgraduate students and, through teaching, significant contribution to the advancement of his or her subject. Acknowledged international standing in his or her subject or profession.

ROYAL COLLEGE OF ART PAY & BENEFITS Pay Structures Staff at the Royal College of Art are paid within one of eleven grades on the national 51 point pay spine. The salary quoted in the job description is a range because it shows the entire grade assigned to the job. The salary offered to the successful candidate depends upon their experience and previous salary. Once appointed, staff (if in post by 31 March) will move to the next point on the salary scale each year on 1 August until they reach the maximum of the scale. In addition to these increments, a percentage rise will be negotiated nationally with the unions each year, and will also be awarded from 1 August each year. Pension Scheme The Royal College of Art is a member of the Superannuation Arrangements of the University of London (SAUL) which is a contributory defined benefit pension scheme. Sick Pay In the event of sickness during the first six months of the appointment any payment of salary in addition to Statutory Sick Pay will be at the discretion of the College. After six months service full pay, less any benefits receivable under the Statutory Sick Pay Scheme will be payable for up to three months. Half pay will then be paid for a further three months together with any benefits receivable under the Statutory Sick Pay Scheme up to the limit of normal earnings. Further payment of salary, in whole or in part, will be at the discretion of the College. Maternity & Paternity Leave All female members of staff who have completed twelve months or more continuous service at the 11th week before the expected week of childbirth (EWC), are entitled to maternity pay equivalent to 26 weeks full pay and 13 weeks statutory maternity pay. The total maternity leave may total 1 year. Paternity leave and additional paternity leave is available to qualifying members of staff whose spouse/partner is having a baby or adopting a child. It is available to both men and women who are partners of the child s mother.

Compassionate and Parental Leave The College will give sympathetic consideration to requests for compassionate leave, dependent upon individual circumstances. Parents of children under five are entitled to 13 weeks unpaid parental leave (different rules apply for adopted and disabled children). Occupational Health Occupational Health support for the College is provided by Imperial College s Occupational Health Service at their South Kensington Campus. Season Ticket Loans The College offers an interest-free season ticket loan for public transport, which is repaid over the period of the loan by deductions from monthly salary payments. Cycle to Work Scheme The Royal College of Art has signed up to the Cycle to Work Scheme part of the government's Green Transport Initiative which allows employees to make significant savings on new bikes and/or safety equipment. Childcare Vouchers The Royal College of Art enables staff to purchase childcare vouchers, through its partner Edenred, as a salary sacrifice scheme. Computing Services The RCA s licensing arrangements allow staff to access software and services at home while employed at the College. Software available includes Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), Adobe Creative Suite

(Photoshop, Indesign etc) and Kaspersky Antivirus software. The College offers free online training tutorials for over 300 software titles for use on both Macs and PCs Staff can also access their personal RCA email accounts and the College Intranet services from home, including our unique File Transfer Service, Room bookings and full remote access using VPN. Staff also have use of dedicated video conferencing and video production equipment and support. Student Restaurant and Senior Common Room Staff are entitled to use the Student Restaurant, Snackbar and RCafé, which provides reasonably priced hot food and snacks through the day. The Senior Common Room serves a more formal menu every lunchtime during term time. Drawing Classes The Drawing Studio runs weekly drawing classes during term-time which are free for staff to attend. Library All staff are welcome to join the College Library. Events All staff are welcome to attend exhibitions, lectures and private views held by academic schools and programmes.
