1 Particulars concerning the post of Admissions Registrar General information about Spurgeon s College Spurgeon s College was founded in 1856 by Charles Haddon Spurgeon, the leading Nonconformist preacher in 19 th century Britain. The College was originally housed in the Metropolitan Tabernacle in Southwark, but moved to its present premises in For most of its existence, the College has trained students for the Baptist ministry. In the last two decades, however, its provision has diversified considerably, and Spurgeon s has become known for its enterprise and initiative in developing new courses in response to the changing needs of church and society. Study towards an honours degree in theology (full-time or part-time) is available in College-based, Church-based or Online options. Alongside a more classic academic degree, training for Christian ministry is available via the first two of these options and recent changes in the curriculum have enabled the College to combine class-based work with an emphasis on the practice of mission and ministry in the context of a ministry placement where options may be chosen which specialise in pastoral, evangelistic or church planting/pioneering ministry. The postgraduate work of the College has also grown considerably in recent years. The College now offers an MA for those who have a degree other than in Theology, and an MTh with four pathways Christian Thought & Practice, Advanced Christian Studies, Applied Theology and Preaching. The opportunity is also available for students to undertake postgraduate research leading to MPhil, PhD and DMin awards. Counselling courses validated by the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body are offered through Spurgeon s Centre for Counselling and Supervision Training. Other courses also exist for example the Equipped to Minister course designed for lay pastors and preachers, and held monthly on Saturdays. After twenty years of offering degrees validated by the University of Wales, since 2012 the College s Bachelors and Masters courses are now validated by the University of Manchester. 1

Our Vision The College's vision draws its substance from three sources: A confessional foundation - established by C.H. Spurgeon in 1856 it has always engaged in biblical and theological teaching on the basis of an evangelical and Christ-centred commitment. A formational objective - understood as the specialised discipleship of preparing men and women in community for the Christian life, its mission and ministry. A geographical location being based in the capital city reinforces the scope of the College's work with a London presence, a national ministry and a global reach. In our calling to serve God's Kingdom, as a confessional college in the Baptist tradition in Higher Education and through the specialised discipleship we offer in training for the Christian life, its mission and ministry, the College Vision for the next 10 years is: To build on our vibrant and diverse learning community by expanding participation in all of the College's programmes from pre-access level to doctoral research; To widen our scope in equipping all God s people by providing varied and flexible learning experiences in Christian discipleship, in both content and delivery, which also support local churches in their own training programmes. To increase provision for the growing church, especially in relation to minority ethnic and pentecostal movement in London and the UK; To develop the College's position in the global city of London, as a centre of excellence undertaking and facilitating research. 3 The College community The College currently employs nine full-time and a number of part-time academic and training staff and has the services of a wide range of associate and visiting tutors, visiting scholars, research and associate research fellows. Governance is in the hands of a Board of Governors elected by the College Council. The student body is diverse, comprising some 200 who attend on a weekly basis, full-time and part-time, and around 600 others on various open learning programmes. At the core of the community are around 75 women and men preparing for ordination as Baptist ministers on both college-based and church-based patterns of training. Application Applications will only be accepted in the form of a completed application form. Applicants are advised to attach a letter of application or make good use of paragraph 15 on the Application Form, which asks for an outline of experience, suitability for and interest in the position in the light of the job description and person specification. General enquiries Be the first point of contact regarding admissions for all enquirers whether by telephone, or personal visit Send prospectus and other relevant material requested via the web site In liaison with the Admissions Tutor follow up enquiries and visits to ensure a pro-active approach to recruitment where possible and appropriate 2. New applications Process all new applications including doing the following: Record details of applications on College database and Source document Write for references Prepare papers for interview panel Organise interview day, in liaison with Admissions Tutor Subsequent to interview, prepare letters and contracts 3. Offer letters Monitor successful applicants responses and follow up as necessary Liaise with Finance Officer regarding the fee structure 4. Course transfers Process course changes/transfers in conjunction with the Academic Admin Team Issue new offer letters and contracts for current students transferring courses 5. Orientation week Send out all information for Orientation Week and the start of courses to new students 4

5 Ensure that the Academic Registrar has a correct list of new students and the courses they are going to take. Obtain library numbers for all new students and input onto the system 6. Recruitment and Marketing Organise recruitment initiatives, events and publications such as Open Days in conjunction with the Business Manager or other relevant member/s of staff Coordinate the smooth running of recruitment initiatives and events, for example: o in liaison with Admissions Tutor prepare programme for Open Day and organise the schedules for the day; o be available during Open days to answer enquiries and assist people to complete application forms; o keep records of people who held personal conversations with tutors and follow up as necessary after Open Day events Produce annual admissions reports 7. NAM (Newly Accredited Ministers) programme Receive and process new enrolments Inform the Director of Online Learning of new enrolments. Along with the Director of Online Learning, keep the NAMs tracking sheet up to date. Ensure that the Baptist Union are given regular updates of NAMs progress Prepare and send out completion certificates 8. Other duties Assist with administrative duties in the General Office as and when necessary, as well as helping the Director of Practical Training (as time allows). It should be noted that admissions applications fluctuate throughout the year and therefore in the quieter times the successful candidate will pick up associated academic administration duties as part of the wider academic administration team Undertake other relevant duties as requested by the Business Manager 5

Please ensure that your application demonstrates how you meet the essential criteria The successful candidate will be the first point of call for all admissions enquiries and it is therefore essential that the candidate is able to discuss the concepts of vocational calling to Christian mission and ministry in general, and specifically to ordained Baptist Ministry, in the context of Christian faith and help potential students discern which course is right for them. It is therefore a Genuine Occupational Requirement that the successful candidate for this post is a practising Christian.
