WSU Outreach College Advisement Program: Provided by a Weber State University work-study student, a group of students meeting grant criteria receive individual and small group mentoring and assistance with post high school decisions and the college admissions, financial aid, and scholarship process. 3. College Entrance Exam Info Mailings: Every family with a student attending BEHS receives a mailing containing the dates and application information regarding the PLAN Test, PSAT, ACT, and SAT college entrance exams. 4. ACT/SAT Information Flyers: Provided during SEOP s and as needed throughout the school year, our flyer assists parents in understanding the difference between the ACT and SAT, the requirements for both exams, and appropriate preparation activities. 5. ACT Testing Center: BEHS is an official national ACT Testing center. We provide all exam dates. 6. PLAN Test Administration (10th Grade): BEHS provides 10 th graders to participate in the practice ACT PLAN Test. This exam provides extensive ACT preparation as well as significant college prep information. A career interest inventory is also included. Parents and students receive an in-depth score interpretation through print materials as well as in a small group setting. 7. PSAT NMSQT Administration (10th and 11th Grade): BEHS provides 10 th and 11 th graders the practice SAT National Merit Scholarship Exam. This exam provides extensive SAT prep information. Parents and students have the opportunity to receive in-depth score interpretation through print materials as well as in a small group setting. 8. USU and WSU Concurrent Enrollment Course Offerings and AP Course Offerings: BEHS offers a variety of concurrent enrollment and AP (Advanced Placement) courses and exams assisting students in completing college general education and breadth area course work while they are still in high school. There is no tuition cost for concurrent enrollment and AP courses. 2
9. Early College Program: Weber State University, USU BC Campus, USU Logan Campus. Junior and Senior students attend college campuses to complete their associate s degree while completing their high school diploma. Counselors coordinate with college advisors for student completion of the New Century Scholarship Program. 10. Bridgerland Applied Technology Center Training Programs: Center Daytime, Night time, and Summer School Opportunities are provided to high school students. BE School District pays tuition expenses. Long term and Short term Career training, certification, and licensing opportunities are provided. 11. United States Military Liaison Services: All branches of the military including National Guard, Reserves, ROTC, and Military Academy programs provide recruitment tables during lunchtime as well as individual conferences. They also attend Dollars for College Nights and work with classrooms to provide curriculum instruction in a variety of areas. BEHS collaboration with recruiters is provided regarding advisement, preparation, and the application processes. 12. ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery): BEHS coordinates with Dale Young Community High School to provide the ASVAB for junior and senior students in the fall. 13. Alternative Diploma Completion and GED: Our Alternate High School, Dale Young Community High School, provides Alternative high school completion options, adult education programs, and GED prep. High School students wishing to participate in these programs are referred through BEHS Counselors and Administrators. Programs: 1. Post High School Day (Fall): During Post High School Day, every college and university in the state of Utah comes to BEHS to work with senior students. An overview of post high school options, the college admissions process, and funding post high school education is provided. Specific instruction from each institution is provided regarding special programs and highlights, campus visits, applications, and scholarships. 2. Dollars for College Night (Fall): Workshops are provided regarding scholarship preparation, scholarship applications, financial aid, NCAA Eligibility, State Scholarship Programs, and other sources for college funding. Guest speakers as well as BEHS counselors provide the instruction. Students in grades 8-12 are invited with specific workshops available for their age group. 3. Post High School and College Prep Classroom Curriculum: BEHS Counselors collaborate with teachers to provide classroom instruction in English 10, English 11, English 12, and financial literacy courses. The curriculum includes: Higher Ed 1010 Presentation Workshop Presented by College Reps, Federal Financial Aid Workshop Presented by College Reps, Post High School Educational Options, Preparing for College, Compare and Contrast Utah Universities Research Project and Paper, and Job Market Basics. 4. Lunchtime Workshops: Students receive personal and small group assistance with college and scholarship applications in the BEHS Career Center during their lunchtime. Before/after school small group services as well as individual appointments during the school day are also available. 5. College Representative Lunchtime Tables and Info Sessions: Recruiters from private and public colleges and tech schools visit with students and provide information and assistance. Often held during lunch or coordinated as special meetings, recruiters display information and offer individual assistance. 3
6. ACT Prep Lunchtime Workshops: Using online test prep programs and print test prep materials students participate in personal and small group ACT Test Prep advisement and activities. 7. ACT Prep Resources: The BEHS Library and Career Center offer a variety of print ACT, SAT, and PSAT Prep resources available for individual student use. 8. CTE (Career and Technical Education) Career Pathways: BEHS in conjunction with Box Elder School District cooperates and collaborates with the Bear River Region to develop provide viable state career pathways for high school students. 9. CTE (Career and Technical Education) Training Programs: BEHS provides a large variety of high school career and technical state certification training programs. FBLA, FCCLA, FFA, and Skills USA CTE Clubs and state-wide competitions are available to our high school students for additional leadership and skills training. 10. School-Wide Career Fairs: Students sign up for 3 career workshops. All students attend workshops in the areas of their choice. Industry professionals in each career area meet with small groups of students describing their work and the preparation required. 11. Lunchtime Career Tables and Workshops: Students have the opportunity to meet with representatives from the Department of Workforce Services as well as individual career professionals. Work opportunities and careers are spotlighted throughout the school year. 12. Work based Learning Programs: During the school year, students have opportunities to participate Job Shadow, Internships, and Cooperative Work Experience Programs. A Non-Traditional Careers Summer Program is also available. High School credit is available for the majority of these programs. Through collaboration with the Division of Workforce Services, a youth employment board is also available for our students seeking employment. GED and Adult Education: A student must be at least 16 to pursue these and a parent must sign them out of regular education. 2. SEOP: Student Education Occupation Plan. This is a meeting initiated by the counselor and every student gets an individual SOEP and group SEOP while in junior and senior high school. Parents are included. Students are introduced to a computer based program called "Utah Futures" where they can access school and career options. This program is through the USOE, so I won't go into detail here as it's not initiated by our district, but all of our secondary schools use it. It's a wonderful tool for post high and career planning as well as scholarship searches plus much, much more. 3. Programs: 1. MESA: Our secondary schools offer "MESA" which stands for Math, Engineering and Science Achievement. This is a club that anyone can join but is targeted to minority and female populations. 2. "Girls Empowerment": A female support group 3. Two Rivers High School: An alternative high school where a young parents program is available. Mostly females are involved; however fathers of the children can also participate. Daycare is provided while the students attend school. 4. Post High Day : All of our high schools participate in a program sponsored by the state's universities for all seniors. 5. Campus Visits: This is mainly done for junior and senior students through local universities. 6. Visits from College Representatives: The different higher education entities also set up booths during lunch at the high schools throughout the school year. 7. Clubs and Organizations: Many clubs and organizations have speakers from different occupations talk about their careers, etc. There are no programs initiated at the district level, but the work done in the individual schools is supported and encouraged by Student Services. Students should contact their assigned guidance counselor at school for direction. 16
