Unit Assessment Report - Four Column Florida International University Administration PO (EDD) Outcomes Administration PO (EDD) - Completion - The Doctoral Program in Higher Education Administration will produce stewards of the discipline who have advanced knowledge and of the field of higher education, and the skills to conduct research in the field. The program that will produce stewards of the discipline will have the following Doctoral students who successfully complete the program. Using panthersoft data, admissions records for each student will be compared with graduation records beginning nine years from the date of entry into the program. Tracking Log Students 06/30/2012 - While a somewhat unrealistic goal of graduating 100 percent of our students in 9 years, considering national patterns and the make-up of our student population, it is still our aspiration. Of those students who graduated this year, 2 graduated within 5 years; 5 graduated within 7 years; 1 graduated within 8 years; 1 within 10 years, and the last after 10 years. Thus, 80% did graduate within 9 years, per our goal. 10/12/2012 - Overall our time to degree is lower than the national average for our field; however, our retention rate will need to increase. Nevertheless, we are reticent to take further action since the graduated students were admitted under the old curriculum, which was revised in the 2009-10 school year. We believe our new curriculum revision will better prepare students to write their dissertations and our experience this year has been positive. Faculty over the last few years have made a concerted effort to facilitate the completion of students who had been lingering in dissertation status. 10/25/2013 2:11 PM Generated by TracDat a product of Nuventive. Administration PO (EDD) - Research - The Doctoral Program in Higher Education Administration will produce stewards of the discipline who have advanced knowledge and of the field of higher education, and the skills to conduct research in the field. The program that will produce stewards of the discipline will have the following Students are satisfied with their mastery of the content knowledge necessary to engage in research in the field. Administration PO (EDD) - Employment - The Doctoral Program in Higher Education Administration will produce stewards of the discipline who have advanced Using an exit survey developed by the program and administered via Taskstream during the term in which students are graduating, students will be assessed on how satisfied they are with the knowledge they gained in the program. This knowledge relates specifically to stewardship of the discipline, and questions on this survey will relate to their preparedness to engage in research to solve problems related to higher education. During the Fall 2009 term, program faculty will develop a three-point exit survey that students will complete in their graduating term. The three points are: highly satisfied with the knowledge they gained (3); satisfied with the knowledge they gained (2); and not satisfied with the knowledge they gained (1). Students Partially Using an on-line survey developed by the program, alumni of the program will be asked about their employment history since graduation. 06/30/2012-10 students completed the exit survey in 2011-2012. When asked whether their academic program had academic rigor appropriate for the development of scholarly practitioners, 90% responded?to an extent? and?to a great extent.? Indeed, 90% believed the program met their expectations. When asked whether they felt prepared with content knowledge and how to use that knowledge, 100% said their program was effective or highly effective. Thus, we met our goals for this outcome. 06/30/2012 - Of those graduates who took the survey, 90% indicated they had employment in the field of higher education either as faculty (4 graduates) or administrator (5 graduates); one respondent did not answer the question. Upon 10/12/2012 - As with last year, we met our goal even though the students graduated under the old curriculum. Revision to the curriculum for students currently in coursework should improve their content knowledge. 10/12/2012 - While technically we did not meet our goal, we came close (90%). We will have to reassess whether our goal is 10/25/2013 2:11 PM Generated by TracDat a product of Nuventive. Page 2 of 8
knowledge and of the field of higher education, and the skills to conduct research in the field. The program that will produce stewards of the discipline will have the following Graduates who have the knowledge and skills to obtain employment within the field. 05/01/2010 06/30/2014 Administration PO (EDD) - Scholarship - The Doctoral Program in Higher Education Administration will produce stewards of the discipline who have advanced knowledge and of the field of higher education, and the skills to conduct research in the field. The program that will produce stewards of Students Partially Program faculty will be surveyed about their academic degrees in higher education or related field, and their contributions to the field in scholarly ways (e.g., conference presentations, publications, workshops, etc.). This information will be obtained via the curriculum vita and annual reports submitted to the department and college each year. graduation, 90% responded that they planned to be employed in the field of higher education as a faculty member or administrator. Technically, we did not meet our goals of 100% employment in the field. Partially 10/12/2012 - All program faculty have doctoral degrees in the field, including the adjuncts, and all the faculty (including the adjuncts) gave at least one conference presentation. We met our goal. The four full-time faculty members have produced over 40 publications since 2007 and regularly present at national conferences. realistic, as a program like ours should attract more than just people seeking jobs in a college or university (e.g., in government offices or think tanks), or, at the very least, we may need to reword our survey, since we think this is how students are interpreting the question about employment in field of higher education. 10/12/2012 - We met or exceeded this goal with regular publications and presentations from the existing faculty and the hiring of a recent doctoral graduate from the University of Georgia. These scholarly endeavors enhance the faculty members? teaching. 10/25/2013 2:11 PM Generated by TracDat a product of Nuventive. Page 3 of 8
the discipline will have the following Program faculty will demonstrate professionalism by holding appropriate degrees and exhibit active scholarship in the field. Administration PO (EDD) - Professional Activity - The Doctoral Program in Higher Education Administration will produce reflective practitioners who are aware of their own practice and who seek to use their research skills to improve practice or enhance policy. The program that will produce reflective practitioners will have the following Faculty. Using an on-line survey developed by the program recent graduates of the program will be asked about how they promote the field via publications, presentations, or professional involvement in the associations of the field. The graduates' survey will be administered during the 2012-2013 school year. The survey of the graduated students also indicated that 100% percent believed their faculty has the required up-to-date knowledge in the field. 06/30/2012 - Of the students filling out the survey, 56% said they plan to present their dissertation research at some point in the future at a professional conference (either local or national) and 70% plan to publish from their dissertation in the future. These numbers were lower than last year?s numbers, though we think we meet our goal. 10/12/2012 - With close to 60% of students planning to publish from their dissertations, we believe this barely met. More faculty/student collaboration on research may be an area for growth. Also, the new curriculum will prepare students for being more cognizant of publication of their research. 10/25/2013 2:11 PM Generated by TracDat a product of Nuventive. Page 4 of 8
(1) Graduates who will remain professionally active after leaving the program Administration PO (EDD) - Professional Development - The Doctoral Program in Higher Education Administration will produce reflective practitioners who are aware of their own practice and who seek to use their research skills to improve practice or enhance policy. The program that will produce reflective practitioners will have the following (2) Graduates will continue their academic and professional development. Students. Using an on-line survey, recent graduates of the program will be asked how they are advancing in their administrative positions, assuming leadership positions within professional associations, or continuing their graduate study and seeking doctorates in higher education administration or a related field. The graduates' survey will be administered during the 2012-2013 school year. 06/30/2012 - Because of some dynamics relating to the tenure process of two current faculty members in the program, we did not administer an alumni survey. However, the nine students who graduated (and the 10 filling out the survey) indicated that they were in current positions in the field, and there is no doubt that a doctorate will improve their changes at promotion. 10/12/2012 - From informal feedback from students and poor retention and time-to-completion rates, we revised the curriculum in 2009-10, and it is too soon to determine whether those revisions are working. The early informal feedback from students is strong. 10/25/2013 2:11 PM Generated by TracDat a product of Nuventive. Page 5 of 8
Administration PO (EDD) - Community Engagement - The Doctoral Program in Higher Education Administration will produce mindful educators who will adopt a critical eye toward ideas and actions and recognize the wholeness and distinctiveness of others. The program that will produce reflective practitioners will have the following (1) Graduates will seek to work in underserved contexts, work with underserved populations, or engage in research that helps underserved populations. Students. Using an on-line survey, recent graduates of the program will be asked to what extent they work in underserved served contexts, such as historically-minority-serving institutions or community colleges, or work with underserved populations, either directly (such as in bridge programs) or indirectly (such as workshops on racism). The graduates' survey will be administered during the 2012-2013 school year. Students. 06/30/2012 - The majority of our students and, therefore, alumni are employees of community colleges or FIU and are moving into leadership positions. This was the case with our graduates. But our survey will need to be revised to ask specifically about this question, as well as to differentiate among the various types of administrative jobs in higher education. 10/12/2012 - The goal has been met; however, our survey needs revision to make clearer distinctions in this area. 10/25/2013 2:11 PM Generated by TracDat a product of Nuventive.
