2 Higher Education Leadership at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas College of Education Department of Educational Leadership The program in Higher Education Leadership prepares individuals for leadership roles in a variety of postsecondary education settings. Graduate Programs The program in Higher Education Leadership offers graduate degrees at the master and doctoral levels. Doctor of Philosophy Degree (Ph.D.) in Educational Leadership Areas of emphasis: Higher education leadership, planning, and policy Student personnel services Community college leadership Workplace learning and performance Master s of Education (M.Ed.) Degree in Higher Education Leadership Areas of emphasis: Student personnel services Management. Ph.D. Program in Higher Education Leadership The Doctor of Philosophy degree (Ph.D.) in Educational Leadership is characterized by a high premium on research, balanced with equal attention to the nuances of leadership, management, and policy work. Graduates from the Ph.D. program are represented in the faculty ranks, mid-level and upper administration in community colleges and universities, and state policy positions. The Ph.D. program in Higher Education Leadership consists of a minimum of 72 semester credit hours of coursework beyond the master s degree, including the dissertation. The program is versatile and allows students to concentrate in one of several areas, depending on each person s educational and career goals.

3 Application Process for Doctoral Students Students must fulfill admissions requirements for both the Graduate College and the Department of Educational Leadership. This program only admits new students in the fall semester. Applications and all supporting materials must be received by March 15 to be considered for fall admission. Candidates filing after March 15 are considered on a case-by-case basis. (The deadline for Ph.D. candidates seeking a graduate assistantship is March 1). Step I. - Graduate College Admissions Requirements Students must complete the online application for admission to the Graduate College and pay the required application fee. Send official transcripts from all postsecondary institutions attended, including verification of a master s degree in educational administration or other approved degree, to the Graduate College. International applicants have additional requirements. Please contact the Graduate College for information regarding these requirements. Submit three letters of recommendation. Submit professional resume or vita. Evidence of writing ability (contact the program s doctoral admissions coordinator or check the program website for more specific information).

Final admission is based on an evaluation of all application materials and the interview. Program Structure and Requirements 72 credits The Ph.D. program consists of a rigorous combination of courses and practical experiences divided into five segments: program core, research core, specialization strand, internship, and dissertation. Doctoral-level courses are reserved exclusively for doctoral students. 5 Research Electives - 6 credits (select two courses) EPY 719 Advanced Qualitative Research EPY 722 Inferential Statistics & Experimental Design EPY 733 Multivariate Statistics Others with permission of student s program chair Doctoral Area of Specialization (18 credits) A minimum of 6 courses in one of four areas of specialization, including higher education leadership, planning and policy; student personnel services; workplace learning and performance; and community college leadership Internship (3 credits) Internships enable students to apply theory to practice and are available in a variety of professional settings. Dissertation (15 credits) Additional Program Requirements Doctoral students generally take the comprehensive examination after all course work (except the dissertation) has been completed and before advancing to candidacy. Upon departmental approval, students may be eligible to transfer up to 20 related credits into their program of study from another institution, as long as such courses were not used to fulfill requirements for another degree.

6 Master s Degree Program in Higher Education Leadership The Master s of Education degree (M.Ed.) in Higher Education Leadership prepares students for entry-level and mid-management level positions at public and private universities, community colleges, and proprietary institutions. It is distinguished by its emphasis on integrating practical managerial skills with a broad understanding of issues across the field of higher and postsecondary education. The M.Ed. is a 37-credit, non-thesis program. It consists of a seven-course core curriculum, four elective courses, an internship, and a capstone experience. The degree program allows students to choose a sequence of courses for an emphasis in either: a) student personnel services; or b) management. Application Process for Master s Students Students must fulfill admissions requirements for both the Graduate College and the Department of Educational Leadership. The internship can be repeated for up to six credits. Capstone Experience (1 credit) Students must successfully complete a 1- credit process (a literature review or a written competency-based examination) that documents their mastery of competencies intended for the master s program in Higher Education Leadership.

8 Graduate Assistantships All full-time Ph.D. students in Higher Education Leadership receive funding through graduate assistantships, and a variety of opportunities exist for full-time master s students as well. Graduate assistantships represent opportunities for students to gain valuable experience as faculty research assistants, academic advisors, program assistants, career counselors, analysts, institutional planners, student program advisors, development researchers, and other professional responsibilities. Graduate assistants are also eligible to receive funding to participate in professional development opportunities. Graduate assistantship positions are available on a competitive basis to students admitted to a graduate degree program. Assistantships provide partial tuition waivers (students pay only the activity fee), generous stipends, and optional health insurance (a $1,000 value). Graduate assistants must enroll in and maintain a minimum of 6 semester hours of graduate credit and are expected to spend 20 hours per week on duties related to the assistantship. For those applying for graduate assistantships at the doctoral level, applications and all supporting materials must be submitted no later than March 1 preceding the fall semester in which an assistantship is sought. Applications may be accepted after this date in the event of an unexpected opening for the fall semester. In rare cases in which an assistantship is available for the spring semester, the application deadline is November 1. (Doctoral candidates not seeking an assistantship have until March 15 to submit their materials).

Other Funding Opportunities There are several forms of financial resources available to both entering and continuing students in the Higher Education Leadership program, including scholarships, grants and loans.
