Teaching and supervising experience I have a wide background and extensive grounding in teaching and have attended and completed an intensive vocational teacher training which is recognised by National Professional Certification System (Portugal) through the Regional Secretariat(Autonomous Region of Madeira)/Ministry of Education. I enjoy contact with students and will always try to help them to solve any problems they may be experiencing concerning their work. Between 1988 and 1990, following graduation from my Master s degree, I taught English language part time at a language school whilst also carrying out voluntary work on the study on the potential of of aquaculture development on the island of Madeira at the local regional fisheries department. I taught 13 18 year olds and also adult classes with varying levels of ability (from no spoken or written English through to advanced students) on a normal curricular basis and through intensive courses. The language school was very innovative and encouraged new ideas as well as the use of all sorts of materials and methods for teaching English. I was responsible for developing, preparing and using teaching aids and written material for my lessons and students over all levels of ability. However, colleagues pooled material, ideas and lesson outlines. Although the subject matter is not directly related to the post being applied for, the training and experience I acquired was extremely valuable in that it taught me how to approach and prepare for students with a range of qualifications and abilities within a single class. In the area of biological/natural sciences I have taught or provided training at all academic levels (in Portuguese): Pre university teaching: O / A level equivalent secondary school students during one day seminars or as an invited speaker on freshwater ecology, biological monitoring and water quality. This has involved the development of written material, slide shows and quizzes or group work. Developed and taught 2 courses on water quality to two groups of approximately 12 students enrolled in the Introduction to Aquaculture course promoted by the Madeiran Fisheries Department (funded by the European Social Fund). Theoretical and practical lessons, fieldwork where students learn to work with equipment in situ. Lessons were developed so that students worked in groups so that they could pool, share and discuss results. Student opinion surveys carried out over the course showed that the water quality module was one of the most popular modules taught during the course. Undergraduate teaching: Undergraduate final year projects all based on aspects of freshwater ecology and/or biomonitoring. Guidance in field and lab techniques, the setting up and organisation of data bases, statistical analyses (including the preparation and teaching of tutorials and group work for selected techniques using worked examples), provided appropriate bibliography, and oversaw all stages on report writing. All students obtained the equivalent of 70% for their final assessment: o 2003 2004. Cristina Gomes Horta.
