University of Cambridge: Programme Specifications Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the information in this programme specification. Programme specifications are produced and then reviewed annually by the relevant teaching faculty or department and revised where necessary. However, we reserve the right to withdraw, update or amend this programme specification at any time without notice. Further information about specifications and an archive of programme specifications for all awards of the University is available online at: MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY (A) IN ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN IN ARCHITECTURE 1 Awarding body University of Cambridge 2 Teaching institution Department of Architecture 3 Accreditation details None 4 Name of final award Master of Philosophy 5 Programme title Environmental Design in Architecture 6 JACS code(s) K100, K110 7 Relevant QAA benchmark statement(s) None 8 Qualifications framework level 7 (Masters) 9 Date specification produced/ April 2007/May 2010 last revised 10 Date specification last reviewed May 2010 Teaching provision and facilities The core teaching staff consists of two University Teaching Officers, with specialist input from a range of visiting academics and professionals. The MPhil is taught at the recently refurbished and extended Department of Architecture s premises at 1 Scroope Terrace, where dedicated MPhil facilities are established, there is a studio with workstations for the MPhil students, a Board Room for seminars and Conferences,, a research Library attached to the Faculty library; there is provision for experimental testing, with equipment located adjacent to the MPhil Studio.. Educational aims of the programme The MPhil in Environmental Design is dedicated to a research-based analysis of the relationship between environmental considerations, and the design of buildings and the urban environment. Although based on a rigorous and wide ranging series of lectures and seminars, given partly in-house but with the participation of speakers from practice, the essence of the course is a research agenda that is developed by individual students. This has proved very attractive over the years to applicants with an interest in passive design and more global ecological issues from a variety of backgrounds ranging from physics and mathematics to architecture and engineering. The multi-disciplinary nature of the course and the exchange of expertise encouraged between students of a variety of backgrounds, and national origins, make the MPhil a unique forum in which to explore some of the most pressing problems of our time. The MPhil has two streams: Option A culminates in a written dissertation (maximum 20,000 words), and Option B, which is aimed specifically at architecture graduates, culminates in a design thesis of 15,000 words (maximum) plus a full complement of design drawings in fulfilment of the Architects Registration Board (ARB) and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Criteria for Part 2. Page 1 of 5
Programme outcomes The programme positively encourages students to acquire knowledge and develop and apply research skills in the following areas: A. Knowledge and understanding of: 1. the role of environmental design in architecture and urban planning; 2. the history of environmental design and technology; 3. the building physics associated with environmental design (ie principles of heat transfer, light, air movement, acoustics, energy demand and supply, etc.); 4. modelling of building performance; 5. monitoring and surveying of buildings; 6. occupant perception, health and comfort. Teaching methods and strategies Acquisition of 1-3 and 6 is through group lectures and seminars, supported by individual supervisions. Acquisition of 1, 3 and 4 is reinforced through a short design project in the 1 st term and a major design project in the 2 nd term. Acquisition of 4, 5 and 6 is primarily through a series of hands-on workshops, offering support in computer modelling, physical laboratory testing and guidance on the use of environmental sensors and loggers. Throughout the programme individual supervision is provided regularly to assist, direct and monitor progress. Assessment Demonstration of the knowledge base is tested through a combination of workshop exercises, presentations, essays and design projects. Assessed coursework takes the form of 4 submitted pieces of work including essays, a design or design report, and a seminar paper. The Option B students additionally submit a 5 th essay during Placement focussing on Cultural Context and Management, Practice and Law Criteria and a log book record of their Placement experiences set against the Criteria. B. Intellectual skills: 1. to reason critically and analytically; 2. to apply techniques and knowledge appropriately; 3. to identify and solve problems; 4. to demonstrate independence of mind. Teaching methods and strategies Intellectual skills (1-4) are developed throughout the teaching programme outlined above, and in the supervision context. The workshops and design exercises present the opportunity to apply the knowledge acquired (2) in a practical context. Individual research activities, oral presentations and written essays encourage students to identify and solve problems (3), and are supported by regular feedback sessions ( studio days ). These strategies, particularly through specialist supervisions, are built upon when the student embarks on their independent dissertation/ design thesis research programme (4). Page 2 of 5
Assessment All the assessment methods, whether continual assessment through workshop activities, submitted essays, design reports, design projects, seminar papers, the dissertation or design thesis, place a great emphasis on the student s ability to demonstrate his/her intellectual skills (1-4). C. Research skills: 1. to identify key knowledge gaps and research questions; 2. to retrieve, assess and identify information from a wide range of sources; 3. to plan, develop and apply research methods; 4. to apply key techniques and analytical skills to a new context; 5. to report clearly, accurately and eloquently on findings. Teaching and learning methods and strategies Students receive specific guidance and general seminars on research methods, the use of libraries, and writing techniques. An initial comprehensive bibliography is provided at the start of the course, which is supplemented by guidance on further reading in the seminars and supervisions. Guidelines on coursework essays and dissertations are given in general terms and more specifically in supervisions. Research methods, techniques and analytical skills are developed through the workshops and coursework. Assessment Skills 1, 2 and 3 are primarily assessed through the dissertation/design thesis, but also rehearsed in the other coursework. Skill 4 is a skill that is particularly relevant to and thus assessed in the main design project as well as the design thesis option (which combines written and design work). Skill 5 is a general skill, which is initially assessed in the essays (written), design projects (oral and written) and seminar papers (oral) and finally in the dissertation and design thesis (written and drawn). D. Transferable skills: 1. to communicate concepts effectively orally and in writing; 2. to manage time and structure work; 3. to work effectively with others; 4. to work independently; 5. to retrieve information efficiently; 6. to assimilate and assess existing knowledge and ideas. Teaching and learning methods and strategies The course requires regular written and oral presentations (1), and feedback is provided in the form of examiners reports or reviewers feedback respectively. Skill 2 is learnt and guidance is provided through supervisions the course is intense and demands effective time management. Skill 3 is developed in group activities including workshop exercises and joint preparatory design work. Skill 4 is developed from the beginning when individual research foci are outlined and discussed with the supervisor, particularly for the essays, dissertations and design theses. Skills 5 and 6 are learned particularly at the early stages of the development of research avenues, and are required at numerous stages and in presentations made throughout the course. Page 3 of 5
Assessment Effective communication of research findings and design concepts are an important criterion in all areas of the students work, and assessed at all stages. Skills 2 and 3 are not formally assessed but tend to be reflected in the general quality of the coursework. Skills 4-6 are assessed explicitly as part of the essays, dissertations and design theses. Programme structure The MPhil A is offered full time (10 months), the Option B over two academic years, 6 terms, 22 months in effect, of which three terms to a maximum of 9 months are in Placement Learning in an approved practice. Entry qualifications are established in general terms by the University and also include specific assessment of previous experience, research interests, written and design work (where available). Candidates should have at least an undergraduate honours degree in architecture, engineering, or related field (e.g. design, physics, mathematics, etc.). Candidates intending to opt for the design thesis instead of the dissertation must have an undergraduate degree in architecture recognised as Part 1 by the ARB/RIBA. The course is currently configured as a series of technical lectures, combined with hands-on workshops and design studios, and a main design project, taught in the form of studio supervisions. The lecture themes include: 1. The history and theory of environmental design 2. Lighting in architecture 3. Thermal performance 4. Ventilation 5. Sustainable Urban Design 6. Climate change, energy demand and supply 7. Comfort and health 8. Research themes relating to the Martin Centre s current research There are weekly studio days which focus on group work and student presentations (eg design reviews, oral presentations, etc.) and are used both as preparation for and feedback from the technical sessions outlined above. Each student is appointed a supervisor who they would see one hour every fortnight, or more frequently, throughout the year. Students attend research methods and writing seminars in the Department. Students may choose to attend units on the MPhil in Sustainable Engineering (Department of Engineering), with whom we have a reciprocal arrangement. They are also encouraged to attend the Martin Centre research society lectures, ARCSOC student society lectures, and other Graduate School events, PhD Colloquia, talks at the Centre for Research in the Social Sciences and Humanities. Furthermore, environment lectures, classes and case studies in 2 nd and 3 rd year are available for the students, and course directors advise and recommend attendance where remedial teaching is beneficial or as appropriate. Students are assessed through 4 pieces of work: essays or essay equivalents (essays, presentation, report or design project) and the dissertation or design thesis. Additionally Option B candidates submit a 5 th essay focussing on contemporary architectural culture and current issues in architecture and the construction industry. Each of the 4/5 pieces of submitted work is up to 3000 words long or equivalent n drawn or calculative content and together account for 50% of the course mark. Essays 1 and 2 cover History and Technical issues respectively and are submitted at the beginning of the 2 nd term. Essay/presentation 3 is a case study based report and report/design 4, the Pilot Project, is based on a design Page 4 of 5
project both are submitted at the beginning of the 3 rd term. The dissertation (up to 20,000 words) or the design thesis (a design project plus up to 15,000 words) is submitted at the end of July and accounts for the remaining 50% of the course mark.
