8 Water Resources Planning in Portugal National Water Plan: Decree-Law 112/2002, 17 th April - Approves the National Water Plan Defines the guidelines for an integrated water management, at national level, based on the diagnosis of present situation and on the definition of objectives to be achieved through measures and actions River Basin Plans: The previous legal water framework (1994) established the obligation of adopting River Basin Plans for the main rivers. The 15 River Basin Plans were approved by regulation in 2001 and 2002 and still in force until the approval of the RBMP. The scope of both Plans goes beyond the WFD provisions, including quantitative and extreme events issues. Regional Water Plans: The 2 Regional Water Plans for Azores and Madera Autonomous regions were elaborated based on the politico-administrative statutes of those regions. Both plans were approved in 2003 by Regional Decrees. The scope are similar to those of the River Basin Plans.
