At DTU International Energy Conference 2013 the latest findings within research in sustainable energy technologies and systems will be presented by DTU researchers and international renowned energy experts The conference is organised with high level plenary sessions with invited keynote presentations on global trends on development of technologies, systems and economy. Furthermore a number of parallel sessions presents and discuss the most recent developments of energy technologies and systems. The conference conclude with a roundtable session, where the minister for Climate, Energy and Building, energy industry and researchers will discuss and identify solutions that can ful fill the needs for green economic growth and create the necessary new intelligent energy systems. The focus will be on fulfilling the ambitious targets set by the Danish government and the European Parliament Background The energy sector has to cope with the financial crises, which have significant impact on almost all countries, and could slowdown the development of new sustainable energy systems, unless special initiatives are taken. Investments in new sustainable energy systems might at the same time promote green economical growth and the creation of new jobs. Furthermore the global population is growing and an increasing share of the population will be living in urban areas. This rapid urbanisation will create a growing number of megacities. By 2050 the world population is expected to surpass 9 billion, of which more than 6 billion will be living in urban areas. Urbanisation generally leads to increased demand for energy-consuming services such as housing and transport. Another challenge is to meet the growing needs of the developing countries and especially ensure access to modern energy for the poorest in the world. If we want to stick to the 2 degrees target, we face huge challenges. And at the same time it is important to alleviate local, regional and global environmental impacts and adapt vulnerable regions in the world to the changing climate. Despite the effort to change the energy systems to be based on renewable energy technologies, fossil fuel will continue to play a dominating role many years ahead. The change towards renewable energy technologies may not only benefit climate change and the environment but also improve the security of supply.
