Page 3 of 13 Turn on the Computer OS X 10.4 Press the Power button. It may be on the computer or the keyboard. If the computer was in sleep mode you may see this dialog.

Page 5 of 13 At the top of the Desktop is the menu bar. The menu bar changes for the program you are currently using. You can access program features using the menu. At the bottom of the Desktop is the Dock. The Dock lets you open programs, system settings, drives, and files. You will see an icon called Macintosh HD in the top right corner of the desktop.

Page 6 of 13 The Macintosh HD icon is a shortcut to all the files on the computers hard drive. The name may be changed, but the icon will stay the same. You may see other items such as network shortcuts, folders, program aliases, and files on the Desktop. Apple Menu OS X 10.4 The Apple menu is at the top left of the menu bar. To see items under the Apple menu, click the Apple icon.

Page 7 of 13 Change the Computer Volume OS X 10.4 You will see the Volume icon on the menu bar in the top right corner of the screen. Click this icon to change the volume. You will see the Volume slider.

Page 8 of 13 Click and drag the Blue slider to adjust the Volume. You will hear a system sound when you release the mouse button. Change the Folder View OS X 10.4 Open a folder on the computer. You will see files and folders displayed as icons.

Page 9 of 13 To view items in a list, click the View as List button on the Finder toolbar. You will see the items in the folder as a list.

Page 10 of 13 To view items in columns, click the View as Columns button on the Finder toolbar. You will see the current folder or file and its location on the computer.

Page 11 of 13 Click the View by Icon button on the Finder toolbar to go back to the view you were in when you first opened the folder. Close a Window OS X 10.4 Click the close button in the upper left corner of the open window. If you have worked on a file, you may be asked if you want to save your work.

Page 12 of 13 Click the Save button if you want to save your work. Click the Dont Save button if you do not want to save. Click the Cancel button if you want to keep working in the program. For many programs this will close the document window but not the application. Check to see if the program icon on the Dock has an arrow below it. Icons with an arrow below them show which applications are open. To close the open program, click the icon on the dock to make it the active program. Go to the Application menu and choose Quit.
