The museum, whose unique collection includes some 2,000 works, has already attracted more than a million visitors from Finland and abroad. The museum is based on Tove Jansson s Moomin books, which have been translated into nearly 40 languages. Jansson s original Moomin illustrations are an essential part of the museum s ambiance, and the three-dimensional tableaux built by Tuulikki Pietilä enhance the mental picture conjured by the events in the Moomin stories. The gem of the collection is a blue five-storey Moomin House that is as exceptional as its residents and its builders, Tuulikki Pietilä, Pentti Eistola and Tove Jansson. The permanent exhibition has been renewed to celebrate Moominvalley s 20th anniversary year in 2007. Saunas 44 Mens sana in corpore sauna A soft and sweet löyly, or vapour, wheezes from the stove while birch twigs slap gently to waft away stress. The sauna purifies the mind, soul and body. It s no wonder that Finns say they are reborn after a sauna. In Tampere you can experience this wonder during the morning and evening sauna at your hotel, in the elegant sauna department of a spa, or in a modern sauna at a swimming pool. The same is certainly true of a vintage public sauna in a former worker s district or a genuine Finnish lakeshore sauna. If you would like to book a private sauna for your group, this is possible too. The Mallasvesi and Vanajavesi lakes meet in Valkeakoski, at the heart of the old Tavastia province. The town s park-like centre is characterized by channels and beautiful suspension bridges. Valkeakoski is a combination of a modern, well-managed industrial town and the age-old, culturally and historically significant rural centre of Sääksmäki.. Strawberries for all tastes! Finland s largest ancient hill fort is in Rapola, Sääksmäki. The Sääksmäki stone church was built on a place holy to pagans at the turn of the 16th century. The Voipaala Art Centre in the medieval Voipaala manor offers art enjoyment around the year. Sääksmäki s scenery has always attracted artists. In the early 1900s, Sculptor Emil Wikström built his artist home and atelier in Visavuori, and later it was adjoined by the Kari Pavilion which presents the works of his grandson, cartoon artist Kari Suomalainen. In the town itself it is possible to travel back in time at the Valkeakoski City Museum situated in some of Valkeakoski s oldest factory buildings and at the Finnish Football Museum. The Kauppilanmäki Open-Air Museum portrays the living conditions of paper factory workers in the 19th century. Have a summery picnic day out with children in the Adventure Park: swim or climb and play in the playground. The smallest can learn the rules of the road in the children s traffic park. Matches played by one of Finland s leading football clubs, FC Haka, can be seen at the grand Tehtaan kenttä stadium.
