New Features of GAWSIS Joerg.klausen@empa.ch, GAW2009, 5 7 May 2009, WMO, Geneva 12

Interoperability of data centers Facilitate discovery Find information regardless of origin Find everything about a station Find all sites measuring a given variable Converge towards international standards Same vocabularies Same quality standards Facilitate network management and development Increase visibility and traffic to archives Joerg.klausen@empa.ch, GAW2009, 5 7 May 2009, WMO, Geneva 13

GAWSIS powered by (W)DCs WDCPC CAPMon AERONET Operational & comprehensive Operational but incomplete No link at present Under negotiation Joerg.klausen@empa.ch, GAW2009, 5 7 May 2009, WMO, Geneva 14

Interoperability: The WMO Information System An evolution from the Global Telecommunications System Current centres NMHSs RSMC RTH WMC Others WIS Centres NC DCPC GISC adapted from: Eliot Christian echristian@wmo.int; 10 June 2008 at the "Ad hoc Information and Advisory Meeting on the Region VI VGISC DCPC project (EUMETSAT, Darmstadt) Joerg.klausen@empa.ch, GAW2009, 5 7 May 2009, WMO, Geneva 15

GAWSIS linking the (W)DCs with WIS (echristian@usgs.gov Services Oriented Architecture Concepts Applied to Specific WMO Systems, draft 23 Jan 2007) Joerg.klausen@empa.ch, GAW2009, 5 7 May 2009, WMO, Geneva 16

Conclusions Integration of information across all variables Search facility across all variables Clearing house for identification of GAW stations Direct link to data across WDCs (not yet for all) Increased visibility of GAW and partner programmes 1 stop shop for information about the ground based GAW network(s) Listed in GOSIC, GCMD, even acronymfinder.com ; ) GAWSIS defines the GAW ground based observational network GAWSIS could be a precursor for a GAW data portal Joerg.klausen@empa.ch, GAW2009, 5 7 May 2009, WMO, Geneva 17

Outlook My Vision I see strong GAW WDCs as the core set of archives, serving a growing user base with growing demands I see other data centers that are relevant to GAW strong enough to co exist serving special communities I see an increasing demand for user friendly access to specialized information lost in a plethora of Google hits I see a WMO Information System that needs standardized access to metadata I see a need for GAW to reach out, yet maintain an identity of its own I see GAWSIS serving this future Description of sites, measurement programs, contacts Co location of sites, clearing house for IDs Cross referencing of observed variables Interface to WIS One way of discovering and accessing data Joerg.klausen@empa.ch, GAW2009, 5 7 May 2009, WMO, Geneva 18

GAWSIS Open Issues Status of EMEP, NADP, EANET vis a vis GAW(SIS) to what extent should these networks be included? If they are contributing networks, they should be included! Situation for some large countries (USA, Russia, Canada, UK, Germany ) unclear Identification with GAW generally relatively weak Multiple agencies involved GAW country contact not very reponsive / active No one feels responsible for entire country Decisions, support by Secretariat / JSC needed Joerg.klausen@empa.ch, GAW2009, 5 7 May 2009, WMO, Geneva 23
